Future careers 2021: Strategic Management for Leaders

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Narayana Murthy – across the world, success stories of visionaries who began companies and innovated constantly abound. Their brilliance and masterstrokes are much admired, emulated, and quoted. However, what is less quoted are the secrets of their approach towards every day business and their focus on satisfying the customer today but the future as well. In short, very few talk about the strategic management that takes place in these companies – but increasingly, education experts are pointing to this field as one that will stay relevant for decades.

“Strategic management is not a box of tricks or a bundle of techniques. It is analytical thinking and commitment of resources to action.”

– Peter F. Drucker, Business Management Thought Leader & Bestselling Author

What is strategic management?

Strategic management is the consistent planning, measurement, analysis, and assessment of all the activities that an organisation needs and does to meet business and sales goals, targets, and objectives. The world over, business environments are changing so rapidly, especially with uncontrollable events, such as the pandemic, that organisations need to constantly assess their strategies to ensure success, whether linear or non-linear.

Broadly there are five stages of parts of strategic management:

  • Goal-setting or taking stock of the present situation
  • Analysis or strategy possibilities
  • Strategy formation
  • Strategy implementation or deployment
  • Strategy monitoring including measurement and adjustment

Why is strategic management important for organisations?

With constantly changing business conditions, every company must plan for the future, in general as well as its own. Strategic management helps leaders use data to understand what direction the organisation should go in next, how it can pivot or transform, what steps are needed for employees, and how they can keep moving forward. Truly effective strategic management is not a one-time exercise but a continuous effort within the company that results in increased efficiency, market share, and profitability.

Strategic business management has thus become a vital agenda driver in boardrooms globally. It isn’t enough to just generate ideas – now, leaders must comprehend corporate strategies in all aspects – feasibility, viability, implementation, and outcomes. Leaders who equip themselves with these skills offer a roadmap for companies with definitive insights, clear frameworks, and problem-solving tools.

How can leaders gain strategic management skills?

PATNA: Several screenshots of questions purportedly from the Joint Engineering Examination (JEE) Mains paper on Thursday went viral on social media platforms a few minutes after the test began.

Candidates who appeared in the exam said the questions were like the ones leaked on Thursday. Ratnesh Singh, who appeared at a centre in Patliputra, said, “I have matched all questions, and they were similar to the ones asked during the online exam.”

Mohammed Arif, another candidate, said students are not allowed to take any electronic devices, including mobile phones, to the exam centres. “It looks like a photo of the questions on the desktop was clicked during the exam,” he said.

The second round of JEE Mains began on March 16 and concluded on Thursday. Around 60,000 students appeared for the second round across the state in six cities, including 22 centres in Patna. The engineering entrance examination is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

Vineet Joshi, director-general of NTA, told this newspaper that it will not benefit anyone if a candidate shared the pictures of questions during the exam. “However, if the allegations are true, we will take action against such mischievous candidates. The person will be booked for using unfair means and we will also ensure that the candidate is debarred from taking the JEE exam in future,” Joshi said.

According to students and a few coaching centres, the screenshots were circulated on WhatsApp around 9.34 am while the entrance test was conducted from 9 am to 12 noon on Thursday.

An official of a coaching centre at Boring road said he got the screenshots on his WhatsApp and when he verified with students, it appeared like the ones asked in the exam. “As per the NTA instruction, students are not supposed to take mobile phones inside the exam hall. If such an incident took place then action should be taken,” the official said.

MUMBAI: The DNB (Diplomate National Board) final theory examination had to be cancelled on Thursday, almost three hours after the scheduled time, as students could not download the question paper. The exam will now be held on Saturday. However, since students already have a paper on Saturday, they will have to appear for both.

DNB courses are run by the National Board of Education (NBE) and are equivalent to post graduate medical programmes. A candidate appearing for the exams from a suburban centre said there were technical glitches in downloading the paper. “After waiting for almost three hours, the NBE announced the exams are cancelled. We have wasted our time today, and it will be stressful to appear for both the papers on Saturday. Wearing masks is compulsory and writing exams for six hours will be inconvenient too,” said a doctor.

A notice on the NBE portal, announcing the postponement of the exam, stated, ‘Due to persistent technical issues in transmission of the electronic hybrid question papers, Thursday’s paper stands cancelled and is rescheduled to be conducted in the forenoon session (from 9 am to 12 pm) on March 20’.

NEW DELHI: Of the 10.83 lakh government schools in the country, over 42,000 lack drinking water supply and 15,000 have no toilets, said union minister of education Ramesh Pokhriyal on Thursday.

Responding to a written question in the Rajya Sabha, the minister to a question on whether the Government has set any time bound targets to provide drinking water and sanitation facilities in all the schools said: “Education is in the concurrent list of Constitution and most of the schools are under jurisdiction of concerned States and UTs. States and UTs have been repeatedly advised to ensure that all the schools, including those under the non- Government sector (private, aided schools, etc.) in their jurisdiction should have provision for separate toilets for boys and girls; and safe and adequate drinking water facilities for all children.”

Quoting the data from the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE), while responding to the question on the total number of schools in the country that do not have adequate drinking water and sanitation facilities as on December 2020, Pokhriyal said: “As per UDISE, 2018-19, out of 10,83,747 total number of government schools in the country, 10,41,327 government schools have drinking water facility and 10,68,726 government schools have toilets,” he said in his written reply.”

Sharing the details including the funds earmarked for the purpose and the target of completion, the minister said that the department of school education and literacy has launched an integrated centrally sponsored scheme for school education – Samagra Shiksha from 2018- 19, which subsumes the three erstwhile Schemes of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and Teacher Education (TE). Under Samagra Shiksha, States and UTs are supported for strengthening of existing government schools, and for creation and augmentation of infrastructure facilities including drinking water and toilets as per proposals received from respective State/UT. The scheme also provides for an annual recurring composite school grant varying up to Rs 1,00,000 per annum depending upon the number of students, for all government schools, out of which at least 10% is to be spent on activities related to Swachhata Action Plan for hygiene and sanitation.
