MUMBAI: With the state government confirming that it would have to conduct the SSC and HSC examinations offline, school education minister, Varsha Gaikwad on Thursday met parents’ and teachers’ representatives to consult and convince them for the upcoming boards.

Starting off the ‘We can do it- offline exams’ drive, Gaikwad said that to ensure a secure academic future for all students it has decided to conduct offline exams for the class X and XII. “All teachers should motivate and encourage students to appear for offline exams and all should cooperate for the success of the drive. Every suggestion in this regard will be welcome and a positive decision will be taken in consultation with the advisory committee,” she said.

The minister added that there would be uniformity in conducting practical exams and submission of journals, lectures will be conducted through Sahyadri channel and practices exercises will also be conducted for the preparation of the exam. Official sources said that in case students cannot appear for the internal assessment, provisions could be made to conduct them after the written exams. Students will soon also be given answers to FAQs on the website to clear all queries, said minister. A question bank to help students understand the paper pattern is also being created.

Francis Jospeh, a parent of class XII student and educationist who attended Thursday’s meeting said, “I was relaxed hearing about the measures undertaken and the minister’s willingness to review and understand suggestions. The boards such as CBSE, ICSE and Cambridge are/have conducted offline exams and our state students can’t be tagged differently as far as assessment is concerned. There will be more options in offline/practical exam given if the situation demands so.”

Meanwhile, as students are worried about the upcoming board examinations and feel unprepared due to the school shutdown, a teacher from a BMC school in the city has made a smart PDF that would allow students to prepare themselves for mathematics and science. The document will allow class X students from state board affiliated schools to download video lessons, chapter-wise tests and revision lessons using QR codes. The content can then be used offline.

Suresh Aabhale, teacher of the Vile Parle civic school has devised the PDF for the civic body. “A lot of students don’t have constant access to data and so our PDF will allow them to download the content and use it for preparation at their own pace. There are question banks and test series with answer-keys for self-evaluation. If a student gets an answer wrong, they can view related videos to help them understand the concept,” he said. Aabhale created the PDF over seven months as he anticipated that students might not be back into the classroom to prepare for the boards.

MUMBAI: Students in the lower classes from undergraduate health science courses are now seeking a postponement of exams scheduled to commence from March 23. In view of increasing Covid-19 cases in the state and also lockdown in some regions, students and parents have raised concerns over the conduct of physical exams. The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences is yet to take a decision regarding the same.

Around 40,000 students are enrolled in the lower classes of undergraduate health science courses across the state. A parent said that with cases rising every day, it would be risky for them to take offline exams. “There is also a rise in Covid cases in the college hostels,” he hadded. So far, the students have sought postponement of exams only.

Meanwhile, the final-year medical exams commenced this week with over 95% attendance. There were requests from students’ groups to have an online exam for the batch. Ajit Pathak, controller of examinations of MUHS, however, said that the final-year MBBS students can start their internships as soon as the results are out and help serve the state in the pandemic as Covid warriors. He added that the exams are being conducted smoothly and that the university is yet to consider the proposal for postponing the exams for lower classes. Pathak also added that because the university managed to conduct the postgraduate winter exams of all health science courses on time, the doctors are now able to serve the government on Covid duty.

On preparation for the examination, he said that candidates should understand the basics of all the subjects taught in schools. “NDA syllabus comprises mathematics, history, English, civics, geography, biology, physics, chemistry and some other subjects. PUNE: The restrictions and the silence in the lockdown have emotionally been hard on many individuals; starting school early will allow students to be interacting with teachers, peers, new ideas and information, educators in Pune have been asserting.

President of Victorious Kidss Educares, Robbin Ghosh said that, “We should not underestimate the amount of informal learning that is happening during the school lockdown. Instead, this can be celebrated and harnessed. Make an inventory of positive learning experiences that students encountered during the school lockdown and build the new learning experiences on those achievements. Teachers and parents should engage students and allow them to express their feelings about learning at home and in an online environmen.”

Ira Ghosh, Head of Primary School (PYP), said that, “Early years and primary educators need to be guided about the importance of developing learning skills in students. Apart from reading, writing and arithmetic skills, learners need to acquire a set of life skills to succeed in this rapidly changing world that is filled with unpredictability.”

Ira added that educators need to consciously work on introducing these approaches to learning, such as verbal and non-verbal communication, self-management, thinking, social and research skills. “At the beginning of this academic year, we took a pause and reflected on our curriculum, brainstorming on what is worth teaching and learning. We made sure we don’t fall into the black hole of traditional demands and ensured the entire experience is student centric. Developing these skills will help learners to stay self-directed and motivated learners, who can easily identify their own learning needs and can design their own learning goals,” she added.

The lockdown didn’t stop the daily routine of scaffolding the concepts from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, rather gave educators an opportunity to use blended learning and introduce flipped classrooms to the primary years. So far educators said that they have got some great reviews from the parents and students.
