A 7-year-old boy from Hyderabad became one of the youngest to have scaled the highest mountain peak of Africa Mt Kilimanjaro om March 6 after drawing inspiration from his cousins’ trekking experiences.

Talking about his experience with ANI, Virat Chandra said that he was too enthralled after hearing all the stories of climbing mountain from his cousins and wanted to try something similar. After having a discussion with his parents regarding the same, his parents approached a coach named Bharath.

Virat’s mother also spoke of a similar story. She narrated when his cousins were at Rudugaira Mountains in Uttarakhand for a trekking trip, Virat had a video call with them. “He was fascinated When Virat saw the place in the video call, he became fascinated. Even he wanted to try something like that,” said Virat’s mother.

Once Virat started off with his training, the coach said he was way too much into it. The 7-year-old completed all the rigorous tasks including running, rock climbing and so on.

The journey had ultimately begun on March 5. However, precautions were taken as he is still a child. In the middle of the trek, they had taken out time to sleep, rest before starting again.

“I was scared but all I wanted was to reach my goal,” said Virat Chandra.

“We took all precautions and had decided that we’d return if he feels uneasy but he made us proud,” said the coach.

On March 6, they finally reached the Uhuru Peak of Mt Kilimanjaro.

Earlier in March, 9-year-old girl Kadapala Rithvika Sri from Andhra Pradesh became the youngest girl in Asia to have conquered Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa.

In 2018, October, six-year-old boy Coaltan Tanner from Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the US became the youngest person ever to climb Kilimanjaro. He was born on September 18th, 2012, meaning he was just six years, one month and a few days when he made it to Uhuru Peak.

African economies are expected to grow by an average of 3.4% this year, the African Development Bank said, as the continent recovers from its worst contraction in half a century.

The 54 economies shrank by 2.1% last year, the AfDB said in its 2021 economic outlook report, as the coronavirus crisis disrupted economic activity across the continent.

“The continent-wide projected recovery… does not remove the threat of increasing poverty,” the Abidjan-based AfDB said in the report. An estimated 39 million Africans are likely to slip into extreme poverty as a result of the pandemic, the bank said, after 30 million were pushed into that bracket last year.

Covid-19 Vaccine Supplies from India Have Reached at Least Six African Nations: Official

COVID vaccine supplies from India have landed in at least six African nations and millions of doses are committed for UN health workers and peacekeepers on a grant basis, a top official said on Monday. Addressing the ‘Namaskar Africa’ virtual event hosted by industry body Ficci, Rahul Chhabra — Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs — also urged Indian firms to leverage the advantages presented by the Africa Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA) that came into effect from January 1 this year.

He said the agreement provides various opportunities to Indian companies. “I hope Ficci members are able to grab the enormity of the change that has come about in Africa and make the mostof it, be the first movers and take advantage of this Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement,” he said.

AfCFTA aims at establishing a free trade regime across the continent. Chhabra also said that vaccine supplies have already gone out and at least six African countries have received them, including Seychelles, Mauritius, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt and South Africa.

According to him, India is working with its partner nations and the vaccine supplies are beginning to roll out, adding that streamlining of processes and waiting for approvals from the partner countries led to hold up of a few days. “We were just streamlining the processes and waiting for approvals from our partner countries,” he said, adding that the government did not want a situation where after the vaccines land, countries do not have storage facilities, there is a lack of approvals and have not got their vaccination centres up and operational.
