Yoga Instructor from Bengal Does Headstand with Amputated Legs, Gives Hope to Others

More than often, absolutely healthy, fit and abled people fail at doing a headstand. In a recent video that has taken the internet by storm, a young woman can be seen doing a headstand independently despite having her legs amputated. Arpita Roy of West Bengal’s Barrackpore had lost her legs in a terrible accident in 2006. From not being able to walk at all to walking in prosthetic legs, the inspiring lady has come a long way.
Through her video, Arpita has also hit out at trolls who have been telling her that she is scared to show herself without the artificial limbs. She, in the caption of her post, has also added that it was a tragic accident that took away her legs and it was not her fault. Furthermore, the ace yoga trainer also mentions that people should be kind since accidents and unfortunate incidents can happen with anyone. She also stressed upon how she is neither shy or ashamed of her body and is in fact happy about who she is. Taking a dig at the haters, she also stated that she does not lead a fake life for social media and puts across things as they are in her life.
Speaking to the Indian Express, Arpita said that the black day of her life had happened in April 2006 after she fell from her bike and a lorry crushed both her legs. She in fact calls it a miracle that she was not killed. Giving details about her recovery journey, she said since her injury was so severe, the doctors did not have any option but to amputate her legs. Once that was done, she spent the next four months confined to the hospital bed.
Her real journey of getting back to life began after she was released from the hospital. Arpita not only gradually started to learn in prosthetic legs but also tried to keep a positive outlook towards life. She says even though she was trying her best, the society was not kind to her as many people stared at her, while some called her a burden. After trying different things including workouts, she finally found her niche in yoga. Doing yoga not only helped her physical fitness but also helped her mentally. Gradually, she became quite an achiever in yoga and started posting snippets from her practice sessions. Soon, she was recognised online by some renowned athletes and other people on social media. She has till now won quite a few contests and has also got featured in Yoga Journal and Amputee Coalition, among others.
