Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday asserted that his party, if voted to power in Assam, will ensure that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is not implemented in the state. Affirming that no religion teaches enmity, Gandhi, during his interaction with college students here in Dibrugarh district, said the saffron party was “selling hatred to create divisions among people”.

“It is the BJP that uses hatred to divide society. No matter where they go to spread hatred, the Congress will ensure it promotes there love and harmony,” he said.

In an apparent reference to the RSS – the BJP’s ideological fountainhead — the Congress leader said there is “one force in Nagpur that is trying to control the entire country” but the youths must resist this attempt with love and confidence as they happen to be the future of the country.

“Congress guarantees to Assam: we will give 200 units of free electricity to every family. We will give every housewife Rs 2,000 per month,” he added.

Gandhi, who is in Assam on a two-day visit, is scheduled to release the party’s manifesto in the poll-bound state on Saturday.

Ram is the Identity of India, CM Yogi Says in Poll-bound Assam

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Wednesday that Lord Ram represents India’s culture, identity, civilisation, foundation and etiquette, without whom the nation will not function.

Addressing an election rally at Hojai in central Assam, Adityanath said that since Ram is the symbol of the nation, people of all ages are chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ with love and respect.

Accusing the Congress of indulging in appeasement politics, the BJP strongman said that successive governments led by the party did nothing for the development and progress of the northeastern region or the country.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrapped the ‘Look East Policy’ and instead implemented the ‘Act East Policy’ for the holistic development of the region. By repealing Article 370, terrorism has been uprooted in Jammu and Kashmir. Before the abolition of Article 370, Assamese people or other Indians were not allowed to purchase land in J&K.

“The Congress had imposed restrictions on the movement of people from other parts of India to Kashmir. But now with the abolition of Article 370, any Indian can buy property there,” he said.

The BJP leader also said that if any one talks about triple talaq now, he will be put in jail. “The NDA government headed by Narendra Modi gave freedom to the Muslim women by declaring triple talaq as illegal,” he said.

Appreciating India’s Covid-19 management, the Uttar Pradesh CM said that even US President Joe Biden has appreciated Modi for effectively handling the Covid-19 pandemic in India, vaccinating its citizens and also sending vaccines to the friendly countries.

Meanwhile, the opposition Congress in Assam said in a statement that the party is amazed at the remark of Adityanath that Srimanta Sankardeva, a 15th century Vaishnavite Saint, was fighting against infiltrators at that time.

“This proves how much they know about the culture they claim they are going to protect. While Yogi-ji talks about much revered 15th century saint Srimanta Sankardeva fighting against infiltrators, he should know exactly what Srimanta Sankardeva fought against,” Congress spokesperson Bobbeeta Sharma said.

She added that Srimanta Sankardeva was against the exploitation of people by those who followed the ideologies and dogmas laid down by Manusmriti and also against idol worship.

“He believed in assimilation of society and was fighting against the caste system. So Yogi-ji needs lessons in history as does the Prime Minister who had said that Lachit Barphukan was a freedom fighter whereas Lachit Barphukan was an Ahom General who fought the famous battle of Saraighat in 1671.

“The BJP keeps talking about Srimanta Sankardeva and Bir Lachit Barphukan at the drop of a hat, yet they do not know who they were or what they stood for. The party (BJP) just talks in the air and thinks that the people of Assam do not notice anything. They are trying to impose Nagpur culture on the Assamese people. But the people of Assam know very well how Nagpur culture can engulf and destroy Assamese culture,” Sharma said in her statement.

The Congress will empower housewives, ensure women’s safety against the rising crime graph in Assam, provide the cushion against inflation and give the self respect that they deserve if voted to power in the coming assembly poll in the state, AICC spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said on Wednesday. Congress will implement the ‘Grihini Samman Guarantee’ if it comes to power, Shrinate told reporters here.

The scheme had been launched by party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during her visit to Tezpur on March 2. The Congress has pledged 5 Guarantee Programme for the people of Assam and one of the most important commitment is towards the housewives of the state, Shrinate said at a press conference here.

There has been special relevance of women in the Assamese society and the 81.2 per cent female literacy rate in the state is one of the highest in the country. But for long the contribution of the housewives has not been recognised or appreciated enough which the Congress seeks to set right, she said. Congress will promote and empower women as an equally important stakeholder in all household functions and decisions, Shrinate said.

“we will empower Assam and we pledge to implement the ‘Grihini Samman Guarantee’ that will cover all housewives of the state without any restriction or underlying clauses”, the Congress leader said. “The home is the cradle of civilization and we are resolute on starting our mission of empowering women at the household level,” she said.

The ‘Grihini Samman Guarantee’ seeks to provide every housewife Rs 2000 each month. The programme will cover all housewives, including widowed and divorced women, even if she has a job or works as a daily labourer to give self respect that all of them deserve. This programme will be implemented within the first few days of the Congress coming to power in the state, Shrinate said.

“A housewife not only manages the household but also has the responsibility of steering its future and that of the society. Recognizing and giving value to the work that they do is quintessential in elevating the respect for them in the society,” the Congress leader said. The party believes that through the Grihini Samman Guarantee housewives will be empowered to make better consumption investment decisions for their households, negotiate price rise, provide better nutrition and better future for their children, she said.

”When we look at the jobs women do at home, even though they may not be working outside, we see the unpaid labour that goes unaccounted and the time has come to ensure that women are recognized for the contribution they make to society, ” Shrinate added.

BolSubol, a mobile app for election-related data has been launched by Navi Mumbai-based startup Demokratika. The app has made its debut on Google Play Store ahead of the State Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Assam, and Bengal. The startup claims that the app presents election data for all Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha election from 1960 to 2021 in an interactive visual format. The iOS-specific app will launch on March 15. The BolSubol mobile app aims to provide poll-related data for the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain in future.

As per the app’s official Google Play Store listing, BolSubol is not connected with any government organisation, department, or entity. The app’s goal is “to present publicly available information in a more visually appealing format and allow for civil social conversations.” The main sources of data on the BolSubol include the Election Commission of India, World Bank, Wikipedia, and public news sources. Demokratika aims to make the app a one-stop place for all election-related data. It also includes opinion polls by different news agencies, the Google Play listing states.

Speaking more over the development of BolSubol for Android and iOS, Demokratika executive and one of the directors, Ritesh Verma told PTI, “Except the election commission’s efforts, not much seems to be done by political parties to empower voters. Hence, the app is rolled out. It will offer a powerful microblogging tool.” He added that some features on the app come behind a paywall.

The BolSubol app also seemingly contains information on rallies and speeches, election schedule, economic and demographic data, and global rankings. Notably, the ECI also has its own mobile apps to provide poll-related data. With the Voter Helpline app, users can search their name on the electoral roll and get other FAQs on elections, EVM, and results. Whereas, the Mx. Democracy app is a gaming app co-developed by the National Institute of Design (NID) Bangalore. The app aims to provide a history lesson of elections in India via interactive missions.
