Taiwanese tech company Asus may have a compact flagship smartphone in the works, as per a report by XDA Developers. Details regarding the upcoming smartphone from the company were leaked recently and the said device is believed to be a compact version of the Zenfone 8, likely to be called the Zenfone 8 Mini.
The device is codenamed “SAKE” and could feature a 5.92-inch 120Hz AMOLED display with a 2400 x 1800 pixels resolution. It is expected to come equipped with a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor and a Sony IMX663 sensor, as information about these two sensors has only leaked online.
Two other devices with code names of “PICASSO” and “VODKA” have also leaked, believed to be variants of the Zenfone 8. The former is claimed to feature a 6.67-inch AMOLED panel while details about the latter are not yet known. PICASSO is also rumoured to sport a similar camera setup as found in the Zenfone 7, with the exception of a 24MP sensor. Leaks suggest that the 24MP sensor is going to be the front camera. Asus, with Zenfone 6, had begun upping its camera game and is only expected to improve upon it.
All three devices are expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, which also powers Asus’ latest ROG Phone 5 series of gaming smartphones. As far as compact flagships go, there aren’t many around. If the rumours about a Zenfone 8 Mini phone are true, then it will be one of the few compact flagship phones in the market.

References to Asus ZenFone 8 were reportedly found in the kernel code of Asus ROG Phone 5 and Asus PixelMaster Camera app. The smartphone series is said to launch later this year.

Asus is reportedly working on the successor of Asus ZenFone 7 that may carry the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor. The rumoured Asus ZenFone 8 series is said to include at least two devices namely Asus ZenFone 8 and Asus ZenFone 8 Mini. According to the XDA Developers, the Asus ZenFone 8 Mini’s codename was spotted in the kernel source code and firmware of Asus ROG Phone 5. Whereas, references to the Asus ZenFone 8 and Asus ZenFone 8 Flip were reportedly noted in the latest version of the company’s PixelMaster Camera app. The report adds the kernel code revealed references to codenames “SAKE,” “PICASSO,” and “VODKA.” Apart from the three codenames, references to “SAKE_PLUS” and “VODKA_PLUS” were also spotted. The publication states that it is unclear if the ‘plus’ references indicate more distinct models. At the moment, Asus is yet to confirm the details of the successor of the ZenFone 7 series. The company recently launched the Asus ROG Phone 5 with the same flagship Qualcomm processor.

The publication believes that the ‘SAKE’ codename belongs to the unannounced Asus ZenFone 8 Mini. The kernel code describes the device as a ‘small phone’ with a 5.92-inch OLED display that has a 120Hz refresh rate and full HD+ (2,400×1,080) resolution. There is a reference of two image sensors – a 64-megapixel Sony IMX686 and a new Sony IMX663 sensor – in the code. Furthermore, Asus ZenFone 8 Flip had allegedly appeared in a Google support document. It is suggested that the rumoured ZenFone 8 Mini and ZenFone 8 Flip are the same handsets. As mentioned, the smartphone is said to pack the Snapdragon 888 processor. It will be interesting to see if the rumour is accurate as most flagship Android smartphones (including budget smartphones) feature at least a 6.1-inch screen. Apple introduced the iPhone 12 mini last year with a 5.4-inch screen and its flagship Bionic A14 chipset. The smartphone has reportedly failed to attract customers.

The report adds that the Asus ‘Picasso’ seems to have the same panel as the ZenFone 7 series – a 6.67-inch Samsung-made OLED screen with Full-HD+ resolution. The phone also appears to feature similar camera hardware on the ZenFone 7 series, except for an additional 24-megapixel image sensor at the from. Details about the Asus ‘Vodka’ remain unclear.
