Prime Minister Narendra Modi tore into West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party TMC as he played on the “Khela Hobe” slogan to say: “Didi, O Didi – you played for 10 years. Now the game will end and development will begin”.

Speaking in Purulia ahead of the eight-phase Bengal election starting March 27, the prime minister targeted Banerjee over “corruption and lack of development”.

“Didi says khela hobe, BJP says jobs; Didi says khela hobe, BJP says education; Didi says khela hobe, BJP says development; Didi says khela hobe, BJP says the rise of women; Didi says khela hobe, BJP says jobs; Didi says khela hobe, BJP says you will get a pucca house, clean water and taps in every home,” said the PM.

PM Modi also accused Banerjee of encouraging Maoists and dubbed the TMC ‘Transfer My Commission’ Party.

Declaring that the countdown for the defeat of the Trinamool Congress in Bengal had begun, the prime minister said in Bengali: “Atyachar onek korechho Didi. Ebar Ma Durgar ashirbadey korbay tomaye oporosto (You have oppressed people for long. Now with blessings of Ma Durga, you will be defeated).”

The Significance Of Matuas and Rajbanshis in West Bengal Poll Battle, Explained

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

The Matuas are a religious sect of West Bengal comprising largely of Namasudras, the second largest lower caste group in West Bengal with a share of 17.4% of the Dalit population of the state. They are basically a migrant community from Bangladesh. As per different estimates, they are around 70 lakh to 1 crore in number though community leaders put it at 3 crore. Their main demands are citizenship rights and refugee rehabilitation.

The Rajbanshis are the largest SC group of the state forming 18.4% of the Dalit population in the state. Their number is estimated to be around 50 lakh. They want territorial autonomy with many community leaders demanding a separate state, Greater Cooch Behar with some districts of West Bengal and Assam. They also want an Indian Army battalion named as Narayani Sena, the army of the erstwhile Princely State of Cooch Behar.

Matuas and Rajbanshis

Once TMC supporters, both the communities recently switched to the BJP wagon based on the poll promises.

Matua and Rajbanshi Factor in the Last Lok Sabha and Assembly Election

BJP promised Matuas and other refuges of West Bengal Indian citizenship through the CAA, winning their support that helped it in winning around 10 of the 18 overall victory mark.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in fact, started his 2019 Bengal campaign from Matua Mahasangha headquarter in Bongaon in Thakurnagar.

While BJP is trying to replicate the same connect in the upcoming Assembly election as well, Mamata is also playing her cards after some Matua leaders getting vocal on CAA delay. They are angry that the central government is yet to announce the CAA implementation date even after two years of the Lok Sabha polls.

Mamata says BJP made a fake promise and Matuas don’t need Indian citizenship and in fact if CAA is implemented, Matuas will lose land and identity.

But BJP that got its first Assembly success in the state in a Namasudras dominated constituency only, Basirhat Dakshin Assembly constituency in 2014, and went on to wrest the Bongaon Lok Sabha constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls that was earlier held by the TMC and CPM, looks all set to fill that gap.

Amit Shah broke bread with a Namasudra household in November and assured Matuas and other refuges of the state that CAA will be implemented once the Covid vaccination drive is complete in the country. Also, PM Modi, during his Bangladesh visit, will visit a Matua temple on March 27.

Before the 2016 Assembly election, the BJP allied with the Greater Cooch Behar People’s Association (GCPA). In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP made electoral promise of naming a battalion on Narayani Sena. With Rajbanshi’s support, the BJP was able to west the Cooch Behar seat from TMC.

The TMC is trying to win them back over. While the Indian Army is yet to have a Narayani regiment, Mamata has already created a Narayani Battalion in the state police force along with announcing state holiday on the birth anniversary of Panchanan Barma, a Rajbanshi icon and reformer. She has also approved a Rajbangshi language board and 200 Rajbangshi-medium primary schools.

Gehlot sticks to ‘no phone tapped’ stand, calls row a BJP plot | India News – Times of India

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

JAIPUR: Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday cited his original response to a question about alleged phone-tapping raised in the assembly last year in a bid to combat the resurgence of a controversy that he said had been raked up by BJP just to disrupt the current session. His counter came on a day when BJP legislator Madan Dilawar was suspended from the House for a week for alleged misbehaviour when his party was demanding a debate on the issue.
Gehlot claimed squabbling within BJP was the reason behind the resurgence of a non-issue, more so after he had long contested charges of phone-tapping and said on record that “it is not the tradition of the state to tap phones of MLA and MPs illegally”. He released a statement in which he categorically said “it (phone-tapping) has never happened in Rajasthan”.
“This is a fight of domination within the BJP ranks,” Gehlot said in his rejoinder on Facebook. “The issue is being unnecessarily raised, and it is being done to disturb the House.” The embers of the phonetapping debate were reignited by the state administration’s official reply to an August 2020 question by BJP MLA Kalicharan Saraf in the assembly belatedly appearing on the assembly’s portal. It states that phone calls had been “intercepted” by the police “after obtaining permission from the competent officer”. This was done “in the interest of public safety or public order”, it says.
BJP has since accused Gehlot of lying in the assembly about not tapping phones and demanded a CBI inquiry. On BJP’s allegation about Congress resorting to phone-tapping to save the Gehlot government in the face of a Sachin Pilot-led revolt, the CM said, “BJP’s claims don’t hold true. The chief secretary or the home secretary, all of them have to do their job legally. Surveillance is done in accordance with rules and regulations.” Gehlot said the onus was on BJP to come out with definite proof about whose phones were tapped and why. “If these allegations are proved, I will leave politics,” he said.
In the assembly on Tuesday, suspended MLA Dilawar allegedly shouted down Independent legislator Sanyam Lodha, who had been speaking on demands for grants for education, art and culture, to demand a debate on the phone-tapping episode.
After Lodha objected to Dilawar’s behaviour, Speaker CP Joshi warned the BJP MLA to back down. When Dilawar allegedly did not pay heed, Joshi asked parliamentary affairs minister Shanti Dhariwal to bring a motion to suspend him. The motion to suspend Dilawar for seven days was passed by a voice vote. When assembly marshals removed the suspended member, BJP MLAs formed a human chain around their colleague. A scuffle ensued, following which the Speaker adjourned the House for 30 minutes. It was the fourth adjournment of the day.
Joshi said he would allow a discussion and a reply from the government if the opposition furnished “details” about alleged phone-tapping.

Part of BJP’s ‘Rath’ Vandalised in Purulia after TMC Leader Abhishek Banerjee’s Rally

The bus part of BJP’s ‘Rath Yatra’ was vandalised on Tuesday in West Bengal’s Purulia. The incident occurred shortly after Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee’s rally in Purulia district’s Manbazar area.

Many police personnel have been deployed in the area after the incident and BJP has alleged that Trinamool Congress is behind the vandalisation, but ruling Bengal party has denied the claims.

The incident allegedly took place when the ‘Poriborton’ Rath Yatra was returning to Purulia after completing rounds of all nine assembly constituencies of the district.

BJP leader Amit Malviya said the bus driver was injured in the incident.

“BJP’s rath for the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Samman Yatra, parked in Purulia, vandalised. Driver suffered injuries. BJP national president JP Nadda would be flagging off the yatra anytime now from Kotulpur. TMC won’t be able to do much to stop it!,” he said.

Reports said BJP workers and supporters, led by the party’s Manbazar candidate Gouri Singh Sardar, have begun blocking roads in the city, demanding that those responsible for the incident be arrested immediately.

Jain cheekily also scribbled “With utmost regards” while signing the letter.

Earlier, at a rally in Mejia, Banerjee said no one will stop her from taking forward her battle against the BJP. “Amit Shah is getting frustrated as there is a poor turnout at his rallies. Instead of running the country, he is sitting in Kolkata and hatching a conspiracy to harass TMC leaders. What do they want? Do they want to kill me? Do they think that they will win this election by killing me? They are wrong,” she said.

Banerjee also wondered whether the Election Commission has lost its independence, and alleged that the poll panel is working as per Shah’s instructions. “Is Amit Shah running the EC? He is giving instructions to the EC. What happened to their independence? My director, security (Vivek Sahay) was removed (by EC) as per his instructions,” she alleged.

All senior BJP leaders in Bengal are flying to Delhi tonight amid speculations that the saffron party is facing internal conflict over its list of candidates for the upcoming assembly polls as it mounts a high-voltage campaign against the Mamata-led TMC on a war footing.

Mukul Roy and Dilip Ghosh are among those summoned to Delhi on an urgent basis, sources told CNN-News18. Rumour mills are abuzz that both senior leaders will be fielded as candidates.

The BJP’s core group meeting has been scheduled to address the issue at 10 am tomorrow.

A week after he quit the Congress, senior leader PC Chacko joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the presence of Party supremo Sharad Pawar, Supriya Sule and Praful Patel.

Chacko, a former Lok Sabha MP, said the need of the hour is a united front against the BJP which ‘I  could not see that in the party where I was earlier’.

“My association with the left parties is not new. Today when I join the NCP, I will be part of LDF. I have been given instruction by Sharad Pawar ji to travel all across Kerala.”

“LDF will come back to power,” he asserted.

“There are two fronts in Kerala. One is led by the Congress another by the Left. I left Congress, so naturally, I have to take a position. I can support the LDF,” Chacko was quoted as saying earlier in the day.

The Election Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announcement of free delivery of ration at the doorstep.

Commission has sought a report from Purulia district authorities on whether Banerjee promised any new public welfare scheme in violation of MCC

Commission has asked for videos of Banerjee’s public meeting to ascertain the matter. The TMC is scheduled to release its poll manifesto on Wednesday where it is likely to announce ‘Duare Ration’ scheme to deliver free ration to households if it comes to power

Banerjee allegedly made that announcement during her public meeting in Purulia on Monday.

In a big push to Hindutva, BJP National President JP Nadda, who is campaigning in West Bengal, promised to bring all “left-out” Hindu castes under the ambit of OBC.

“The BJP government will constitute a commission and recommend their inclusion,” BJP Spokesperson Amit Malviya tweeted.

Pishi denied them this reservation for a decade, he added.

Union Minister Rajnath Singh hit out at the TMC on Tuesday as it accused the Mamata Banerjee-led party of corruption and political foulplay.

“West Bengal is now known for it’s cut money… not one person in the world can point out a figure and call BJP a corrupt party, he said at a rally in the Sabang constituency.

“Isn’t it correct that bombs are made in West Bengal, and political workers are killed? The day we form the government, we will see who has had ‘Maa Ka Dudh’ to make bombs and attack people,” Defence Minister & BJP leader Rajnath Singh in West Midnapore, West Bengal

Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta, nominated by the BJP for the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections, resigned from the Upper House today amid a row over his nomination. The TMC had decided to move a disqualification notice against Dasgupta for “violating the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution”, after the BJP gave him ticket to contest. The Tenth Schedule of the Constitution says a nominated member of Parliament shall be disqualified if he or she joins a political party after the expiry of six months from the date of taking the seat. The BJP announced Sunday that Dasgupta would be the party’s candidate from Tarakeshwar constituency in Bengal that is going to assembly polls in eight phases starting March 27.

Protests were held across West Bengal after several aspirants criticised the party and resigned after they were denied tickets for the assembly elections. BJP leader and TMC turncoat Sovan Chatterjee along with with his friend Baisakhi Bandopadhyay quit the party after both of them were denied tickets. Chatterjee’s constituency for several decades, Behala Purba, was given to actor-turned- politician Payel Sarkar, who joined the party a few days back. Sovan requested the BJP leadership that he wanted to contest from Behala East but the party has given him the ticket to contest from Behala West.

In a letter to BJP State President Dilip Ghosh, Sovan mentioned, “I fondly remember how you took the initiative of inducting me into the party in 2019. You have always been encouraging but a few minutes back, I got a call from Shiv Prakash ji (National Joint Secretary, Organisation) who told me that the party has decided to give me ticket from Behala West. Also, the party has decided not to give Baisakhi Banerjee, Co-convenor, Kolkata Zone any ticket from anywhere. I feel extremely humiliated and pained to accept this decision as being a public representative for thirty six year.” His letter reads, “As a Mayor and minister, I have contributed to the development of not only Behala, but entire Kolkata. My commitment to the people of West Bengal at large cannot be denied even by my Opposition parties. But the party’s decision not to give me nomination from Behala East is a moral defeat for me and I have never compromised with my principles.”

On the context of Baisakhi Banerjee’s resignation, he mentioned, “Whenever, I have interacted with you, I clearly said that Baisakhi and I have contributed jointly and in a very small span of time, she has managed to garner huge support in the entire Kolkata zone, especially in Behala. But you have decided to overlook her contribution and have decided not to give her an opportunity to contest the election. Therefore, I tender my protest against that also.”

In August 14, 2019, Sovan Chatterjee joined the BJP and then many in the political fraternity questioned that how he will survive in politics due to his hibernation for nearly two years (after resigning from the TMC in November 2018) coupled with health related issues.

On October 29, 2019, Sovan and Baisakhi sprung a surprise after they met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence on the occasion of ‘Bhai Phonta’ (Bhai Dooj).

Then, sensing that Sovan, Mamata’s once blue-eyed boy ‘Kanan’ (as he was fondly called), may rejoin the TMC, the BJP reached out to him. Then, the first one to approach him was Arvind Menon (BJP National Secretary) followed by other senior party leaders over telephone.

‘Like Sourav Ganguly, BJP Too Would Hit a 6 in Polls’: With Local Connect, Rajnath Singh Woos Bengal

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

In a move to connect to the local people ahead of polls, Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday invoked Bengali icon and former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly in his speech. He said that like Ganguly hit a six, with the state’s support, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would too hit a six in the assembly elections.

“Whenever Sourav Ganguly crossed the crease, it was sure that he would hit a six. Likewise, with your support in Lok Sabha, we’ve crossed the crease and surely we’ll hit a six in assembly polls and form BJP govt here,” Singh said in West Midnapore.

Ganguly, the president of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), had recently suffered a mild stroke. According to doctors, three arteries of the 48-year-old were blocked by over 70 per cent and he received a stent in one of the arteries.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and state governor Jagdeep Dhankhar were the first to visit the former India skipper at the hospital. He received calls from the home minister and the prime minister inquiring about his health.

Dhankhar also met the cricketer at Raj Bhavan for the first time, in the over two years he has spent in office. Pictures of the meeting had also gone viral on all social platforms.

According to a report in Indian Express, the hospital authorities had set up a special ‘Sourav Ganguly lounge’ with tea, coffee and water dispensers for visitors who went there without permission. At the lounge, health updates of the former cricketer were shared with the fans at regular intervals.

There were speculations of Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee, Mithun Chakraborty and cricketer Sourav Ganguly joining the BJP. However, while Ganguly and Chatterjee haven’t yet joined the saffron brigada, Chakraborty became a member a few days ago.

The ruling Trinamool Congress, however, feels that this is a BJP strategy “to confuse people”. “By clicking pictures with Sourav Ganguly or Bumba Da (Prosenjit) or Mithun Da, who are immensely popular among Bengalis, BJP is trying to create confusion. Like every other false agenda they bring, this is another fake narrative,” the TMC Rajya Sabha MP and theatre director Arpita Ghosh was quoted as saying by The Print before Chakraborty’s entry into the BJP.

Chennithala alleges nexus by LDF, BJP

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala has alleged that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has been trying to pave the way for the BJP to come to power in the State by fielding weak candidates in key constituencies.

Speaking after inaugurating the Assembly constituency convention at Sulthan Bathery on Monday, Mr. Ramesh said that the move also targeted spoiling the prospects of the Congress party.

“While the CPI(M) had fielded its senior leader V.S. Achuthanandan in Malampuzha in the 2016 Assembly polls, now the party has not fielded any prominent leader in the segment for the forthcoming polls”, Mr. Chennithala said, adding that the situation in Manjeswaram was no different. “Such a move reveals the nexus between the two parties in the forthcoming polls”, he said.

In contrast, the UDF had announced the candidature of the senior Congress leader K. Muraleedharan in Nemom to defeat the BJP, he said. “The farming community in the State, especially in Wayanad and Idukki districts, is in a crisis after the declining prices of agriculture produce in the market, but the LDF government has failed to address the issue”, Mr. Chennithala said.

Though the government had announced special packages for the coffee farmers in Wayanad and Idukki districts, it had failed to allocate any funds for the purpose, he said.

Mr. Chennithala also inaugurated the constituency conventions at Mananthavady and Kalpetta.
