Just six years ago a study by Observer Research Foundation highlighted that women in India are underrepresented in Twitter’s political conversations. That seems to be changing as a recent survey commissioned by the microblogging platform shows Indian women discuss diverse topics on the platform, ranging from current affairs to social change.

Twitter analysed over 5 lakh accounts of women across 19 Indian cities between January 2019 and February 2021 to understand what they enjoyed talking about on the platform, and they found passion and interests topped conversation themes, with fashion, books, beauty, sports and entertainment being the most talked-about topics.

More than 40% women said they discovered a new interest on Twitter and those from Guwahati, Pune and Lucknow tweet the most about their passions.

A fourth of women turn to the platform to stay informed of current affairs, and those from Guwahati and Delhi are leading the list. Topics that dominated conversations in the category include ‘COVID-19’, ‘Delhi Elections 2020’ and ‘Student Exams’.

Women have also turned to Twitter to share their professional and personal victories. Users from Chennai, Kolkata and Madurai tweeted the most about both small and big wins, the survey noted.

Nearly 37% women said they have made real-life friendships on the platform. Women from Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad have tweeted the most to make personal connections. Some have also used the platform to come together with other women with similar interests, creating several hashtags including #WomenInScience and #WomenInMarketing.

Some women also tweet about challenges like working from home and being a single mom. This has helped them build connections by sharing experiences, the company noted.

Other common conversation themes include showcasing creative interests like photography, dance and poetry to a virtual audience.

Covid-19 prompts women to take ownership of money, invest more: Survey – Times of India

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

NEW DELHI: A greater number of women in India are taking ownership of their money and investing more as compared to 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic ravaged the economy and hit household budgets, according to a survey.
The percentage of women who actively invest has risen by 10 percentage points since last year, the survey conducted by Scripbox, a digital wealth management service firm, ahead of the International Women’s Day found.
Coronavirus: Live updates
The survey involving 778 respondents from across the country was aimed at “examining aspects of financial preparedness, investment behaviours and challenges around money matters of women”.
“This annual survey records a clear progression in women investing more and taking greater control of their money over the last year as a result of the economic impact of the pandemic.
“The percentage of those who actively invest has risen by 10 per cent since the last year,” it said.
Women who would earlier leave the financial decisions to their husbands, or other male members of the family have, over the course of the past year, reclaimed control of their finances and by extension, their well-being.
“Sixty-seven per cent of women make joint decisions with their spouses and 21 per cent of women say that they handle them independently.
“The number of women who say that they have an equal say in money matters along with their spouses has doubled since last year, from 33 per cent to 67 per cent in 2021,” the survey said.
For non-metro women, financial decisions are largely left to the parents, it added.
For a large section of the respondents, getting involved in financial planning decisions lent them a sense of confidence that encouraged them to take risks.
Women continue to be avid savers, with over 50 per cent preferring to squirrel away their money in fixed deposits and 36 per cent choosing to invest in mutual funds.
Twenty-one per cent of women are investing in stocks.
“Nearly 60 per cent of women save more than 20 per cent of their income every month. Fifty-six per cent of women prefer fixed income products such as Fixed Deposits, Public Provident Funds, and other tax-saving schemes,” the survey said.
Sripbox founder Atul Singhal said embracing systematic long-term investing helped create a greater sense of well-being among women. It was promising to see more women taking the reins of their financial future.
“Women tend to prioritise long-term growth over immediate returns and look to achieve life goals. Their long-term view of wealth creation lends ideally to investing which requires and rewards that perspective,” he said.
The survey showed that saving for retirement is the foremost financial goal for women (58 per cent) in the country. Other goals include children’s education (52 per cent) and creating an emergency fund (50 per cent).
“Expectedly, among single women, their top financial goal was to save for travel (51 per cent). Saving up for a home was also among their top four financial goals,” the survey said.
While women have come a long way in terms of achieving financial independence, there is still a long way to go.
According to the survey, at least 50 per cent of women admitted to having low or no confidence in their financial decision-making and investment acumen.
“One out of two women say they don’t have enough knowledge and are confused about financial planning. One out of every five women in non-metros say that they do not have enough money to put towards their savings,” the survey said.

Joe Biden Hopes America to Be Back to Normal by This Time Next Year

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

President Joe Biden on Tuesday said he hopes that the United States, the country hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic, would be normal by the same time next year. “When do I think things will get back to normal? I’ve been cautioned not to give an answer to that because we don’t know for sure. But my hope is, by this time next year, we’re going to be back to normal,” Biden told reporters at the White House.

But a lot is yet to be done, he said. “But again, it depends upon if people continue to be smart and understand that we still can have significant losses. There’s a lot we have to do yet,” Biden said.

The United States has lost 511,839 lives so far due to COVID-19. Biden on Tuesday announced measures to increase the production of COVID-19 vaccines and accelerate process of vaccinating Americans.

“We’re increasing the places where people can get vaccinated. We’ve sent millions of vaccines to over 7,000 pharmacies to make it easier for folks to get their COVID-19 vaccine shot like they would their flu shot,” he said. “The federal government is also working with states to set up hundreds of mass vaccination centres in places like stadiums, community centres, parking lots that vaccinate thousands of people per day. My wife Jill and I just visited one in Houston last week. It’s incredible,” Biden said.

So far three vaccines have received emergency use authorization. “With this increased production of three safe and effective vaccines, we have an opportunity to help address the urgent national need more quickly and getting our schools back open safely.

“We should all be encouraged by this news of a third safe and highly effective COVID-19 vaccine. The more people who get vaccinated, the faster we’re going to overcome this virus and get back to our loved ones, get our economy back on track, and start to move back to normal,” he said. “One of my first goals when I got into office was to say that there will be 100 million vaccination shots administered in my first 100 days in office. We’ve got halfway to that goal in 37 days, and I feel confident we’ll make it all the way,” he said.

“We have a long way to go, but, we’re going to use every resource of the federal government to make it happen,” he added. Biden said this is a national imperative that they get the kids back into the classroom safely and as soon as possible.

Present Positivity Rate Suggests Covid-19 Close to Being Under Control: Health Ministry

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

India’s present overall COVID-19 case positivity rate of 5.11 per cent suggests the pandemic is close to being under control, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday. Addressing a weekly press conference, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said though certain states, including Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, are seeing a surge in number of COVID-19 active cases, ”the fact remains that recovered cases are still more than 97 per cent and India’s total active cases are less than 2 per cent (1.51 per cent)”.

Bhushan said that central teams have been deputed to Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. ”We are monitoring Haryana also,” he said. Two states, Maharashtra and Kerala, account for 75 per cent of the total active COVID-19 cases in the country, he stated.

”According to WHO, if 140 tests per million are being conducted per day and case positivity rate is 5 per cent or below, it means the COVID-19 pandemic is under control. We are very close to that mark with the present overall case positivity being 5.11 per cent,” he said. NITI Aayog member (Health) V K Paul urged people to come forward and get vaccinated to break the chain of transmission, while stressing that public compliance for COVID-19 appropriate behaviour cannot be diluted.

He said a large proportion of the population was still susceptible to disease and cautioned against any laxity. He said one of the reasons for the surge in cases in some states are large gatherings, parties and weddings. He urged people to maintain social distance and avoid gatherings, stating these can act as super-spreading events.

Bhushan said India has recorded 113 COVID-19 deaths per million and conducted 1,57,684 tests per million population. According to the Health Ministry figures updated at 8 am, India’s total COVID-19 active caseload was recorded at1,68,358 comprising1.51 percent of India’s total infections.

The second phase of the COVID-19 vaccination process has begun in India for citizens above the age of 60 or those above 45 with co-morbidities. Aside from the Co-WIN web portal, citizens can also use the Aarogya Setu app to register for the vaccine. The government had previously announced that a dedicated Co-WIN app would be rolled out to ensure the same registration process. However, the app that is currently available on Google Play Store is accessible to administrators and not eligible beneficiaries. On the other hand, Aarogya Setu is free to download via Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

To register for the COVID-19 vaccine in India via Aarogya Setu, users will need to find the section ‘Cowin‘ within the app for Android or iOS. Select the ‘Vaccination’ option and then tap on ‘Register Now.’ Citizens will first need to register via their 10-digit mobile number and enter the OTP. In the second stage of registration, select the type of Photo ID proof such as Aadhaar, PAN, Driver’s license, and more. You will also need to provide basic information such as gender and date of birth. If you’re above 45 years with co-morbidities, select the check box and carry relevant documents at the time of vaccination.

After this, you will see a page where you can add up to four beneficiaries with the same mobile number. Select the vaccination centre by entering the pin code, book the time slot, and select Proceed. Eligible citizens also have the option to re-schedule or cancel the appointment.

Many private hospitals have received certification to act as COVID-19 vaccine centres where they cannot charge more than Rs 250 per shot. COVID-19 vaccines are free of cost in government hospitals. Citizens who are not tech-savvy or do not own a smartphone can call the centre number — 1507. It appears that the Aarogya Setu app, similar to the Co-WIN platform, does not allow citizens to choose which COVID-19 vaccine they want. Users are also advised to keep the app updated in case the CoWIN dashboard is still unavailable.

Twitter Tackles Covid-19 Vaccine Misinformation With Labels, Strike Policy

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

LONDON: Twitter said it would apply warnings to tweets that contain misleading information about COVID-19 vaccines and implement a strike system of enforcement that could see users permanently banned for repeat violations.

The social media network started promoting public health information before COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic. It also aimed to remove demonstrably false or misleading content about the virus that had the highest risk of causing harm.

Since introducing its COVID-19 guidance, it said it had removed more than 8,400 tweets and challenged 11.5 million accounts.

With more and more people now looking for authoritative public health information about vaccines as programs were rolled out across the world, it said it would expand the guidance.

Katy Minshall, Twitter’s head of UK public policy, said the company recognised the role it played in giving people credible public health information.

“We continue to work with health authorities around the world – including (Britain’s health service) the NHS  – to ensure high visibility access to trusted and accurate public health information on our service, including about COVID-19 vaccines,” she told Reuters.

“Today we will begin applying labels to tweets that may contain misleading information about COVID-19 vaccines, in addition to our continued efforts to remove the most harmful COVID-19 misleading information from the service.”

She said the approach built on existing work to guard against false claims about the safety and effectiveness of inoculation.

Vaccines are at the centre of government plans to fight the pandemic that has caused more than 2.6 million deaths to date.

There have been concerns, however, that public distrust of the shots could jeopardize the success of vaccination programs.

Surveys and data show varying levels of willingness to receive a shot according to country and demographic group.

In Britain, where more than a third of adults have received at least one vaccine shot, authorities are working to overcome hesitancy among some ethnic groups.
