Suryakumar Yadav: India vs England: Suryakumar Yadav’s controversial dismissal sparks ‘soft signal’ debate | Cricket News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: India captain Virat Kohli has called for changes to the ‘soft-signal’ rule for outfield catches after team mate Suryakumar Yadav was controversially dismissed in Thursday’s Twenty20 International against England.
Yadav smashed 57 before his pull shot sailed to deep square leg where Dawid Malan took a tumbling low catch. As England celebrated, on-field umpire K N Ananthapadmanabhan gave the soft signal of ‘out’ before sending the decision to TV umpire Virender Sharma.
On-field umpires give a ‘soft signal’ based on their intuition when there is a tight call, making a decision before asking the TV umpire to look at it again from different angles in slow motion.

4th T20I: India beat England by 8 runs to level series

TV umpires must uphold the soft signal decision unless they have conclusive evidence to overturn it.
Replays of Thursday’s incident suggested the ball might have touched the grass but Sharma was not fully convinced and upheld Ananthapadmanabhan’s decision.
Kohli said during the presentation ceremony it was impossible for an on-field umpire to clearly see whether a catch taken in the deep was clean or not.
“Why can’t there be an, ‘I don’t know’ call from the umpire?” Kohli said after India levelled the five-match series at 2-2.
“Why does it have to be conclusive? These things sometimes can really change the course of a whole game.

“You want these things ironed out as much as possible, keep this game simple, keep it linear, have one set of rules which are not grey areas.”
Former India Test player VVS Laxman wondered what was the point of “… watching so many replays using top class technology and still go by the soft signal …”
“I think this rule needs to be revisited and changed,” Laxman tweeted.

Former England spinner Graeme Swann called it a “stinking decision” while seamer Stuart Broad echoed Kohli’s view.
“It’s the ‘soft signal’ which is odd. Hard for off field umpire to overturn …” Broad tweeted.

NEW DELHI: West Indies batsman Chris Gayle thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for helping Jamaica by providing COVID-19 vaccines under the Vaccine Maitri initiative.
As part of the Vaccine Maitri initiative aimed to assist countries in their fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the Made-in-India vaccines reached Jamaica last week.
“Honourable Prime Minister Modi, people of India and Government of India, I want to thank you for the donation of vaccine to Jamaica. We appreciate it, thank you so much. India I will be seeing you soon and thanks once again,” Gayle said in a video posted on Friday by the official Twitter handle of India in Jamaica.

Earlier this week, West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell expressed gratitude towards PM Modi for sending coronavirus vaccines to Jamaica.
Jamaica had also thanked India for sending 50,000 doses of coronavirus vaccines. In a tweet, Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness had said, ” I am extremely pleased to report that yesterday afternoon, we received our first shipment of 50,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine donated by the Government of India. We express our deep appreciation to the Government and people of India for this very much-needed support.”

Last week, former West Indies cricketers Vivian Richards, Richie Richardson, Jimmy Adams, and Ramnaresh Sarwan had thanked PM Modi for helping the Caribbean countries by providing Covid-19 vaccines under the Vaccine Maitri initiative.

India vs England: Getting under the pump before T20 World Cup is good for us, says Ben Stokes | Cricket News – Times of India

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

AHMEDABAD: England star all-rounder Ben Stokes says losing a tight game like the fourth Twenty20 against India on Thursday and going into a ‘winners-take-all’ contest will only prepare them better for the World Cup as they will get used to pressure situations.
Eyeing an unassailable 3-1 lead, the Eoin Morgan-led side faltered in a tricky chase of 186 to go down to India by eight runs.
The fifth T20I, scheduled for Saturday, is now like a summit clash.
“Whoever wins that game wins the series so you know that’s great for us as a team, and especially with the T20 World Cup coming up, the more pressure situations we get into as a team, the more we will benefit from it,” Stokes told reporters during the post-match interaction on Thursday.

“The more pressure that we get under as a team, the more that’s going to do for us in that World Cup, because World Cups can end very quickly. Every game is a big game.”
Stokes nearly carried England home with his 46 off 23 balls but he and captain Morgan were dismissed off consecutive Shardul Thakur deliveries at the start of the 17th over from where it was tilted in home team’s favour.
“One of us have got to be there till the end. Leaving that many runs for our bottom order to have to deal with obviously is less than ideal. In that situation, one of our middle-order needs to be there till the end to get it over the line. It’s always more frustrating when you feel like you’ve got the game in your hands.”

01:184th T20I: India beat England by 8 runs to level series

4th T20I: India beat England by 8 runs to level series

“Rather than going away and being too down on myself you got to look at these things and assess them and learn from them. You know we’ve got a T20 World Cup coming up and there’s no doubt it will put in a similar situation at some point in that tournament so these are all great learning experiences for us as players,” he said.
Talking about Saturday’s game, he said: “It is a final because if we don’t win then we lose the series, and we don’t want to lose the series.”
“We want to make a habit of winning. As I said the more situations we get put into where we’ve got pressure on us and we keep prevailing, that’s just got to do with the world of good.”
The Morgan-led England have been in brilliant form in the white ball cricket since their ODI World Cup victory in 2019.

“Getting into any of our white ball teams now is a huge honour, purely because of how well we have played over the last four-five years.
“Even the guys who are in the XI know that there’s guys on the bench, knocking that door down, so competition for places in this team is real, real healthy and it really drives everybody to get better and better every day,” Stokes said.
In the first three T20Is the team that has won the toss, has chosen to bat second and won but the latest match bucked that trend.
“This is the best wicket we’ve had in this series. We knew that straightaway after the first couple of overs with Jofra and Woody. The wicket didn’t have that sort of up and down, bounce where it did the first couple of games. The bowl skidded on nicely.
“You got to give credit to India and the way they bowled. They realised quite early that taking the pace off the ball and digging into the wicket was actually quite tough,” he concluded.

India vs England: Improvisation and luck: Audacious shots played in the India-England T20I series so far | Cricket News – Times of India

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

NEW DELHI: India and England — two of the biggest T20I batting powerhouses in world cricket currently have showcased some exemplary shots in the first three T20Is of the five-match series.
Although the three matches played so far at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad have not been very high-scoring affairs, even on a tricky surface, some of the power hitters and stroke makers have managed to play some audacious and at times very lucky shots that have gone for boundaries.
While batsmen trying to negate the spin with reverse sweeps has been a common sight in the series, some of the more innovative shots too have been out on display by players from both sides.
Outwitting the bowlers and rendering the field placements null and void, batsmen have found unique ways of scoring runs.
TimesofIndia.com here takes a look at some of the most out of the box shots played by the batsmen in the series so far:
1st T20I – Rishabh Pant reverse scoop off Jofra Archer
When Rishabh Pant came up with his reverse-scoop for the first time in the recently concluded Test series against England legend James Anderson, the whole world was in awe of the swashbuckling batsmen. Tillakaratne Dilshan, who was the first batsman to play the scoop shot over the wicket-keeper called it ‘outrageous’. But when Pant did the same to one of the fastest bowlers in the world — Jofra Archer — in the first T20I, it was really something to behold — a reverse-scoop off a bowler bowling at over 90 miles/hour.
So impressed was the cricketing fraternity with the audacity of Pant’s shot that he was praised by multiple cricketers.
‘Greatest shot that’s ever been played in cricket’, ‘incredible’, ‘absolutely fearless’, were some of the words said by the greats of the game said about the shot that Pant played off Archer’s thunderbolt.
The incident happened in the fourth over of the first T20I when Pant took on Archer, changing to a right-handed stance and scooping him over the keeper and the first slip fielder for a boundary. Archer was visibly stunned in his follow through as Pant produced an absolutely extraordinary shot.

1st T20I – Hardik Pandya ramp shot off Ben Stokes
A shot that has been a potent weapon in Hardik Pandya’s armory for quite some time now — the ramp shot that he plays against the pacers’ bouncers. One of the best offensive shots, with minimum of risk involved, Hardik has mastered the ramp shot.
It was in the 15th over of India’s innings in the 1st T20I when Hardik played his trademark shot to perfection off Ben Stokes.
A banged in short ball outside off was perfectly guided to the third-man fence with the timing on that shot doing all the work for Hardik. Although Hardik was off-balance and was on the ground after playing the shot, he had timed the bat-ball connection to perfection.

3rd T20I – Jonny Bairstow scoop off Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Jonny Bairstow has been one of the most destructive batsmen in the England batting unit in the recent past. Apart from classical strokeplay, it is Bairstow’s outside-the-box thinking while scoring that separates him from the rest.
Finding gaps at will and with an ability to hit any ball to the fence, Bairstow is a pretty difficult batsman to bowl at.
Bairstow during the third T20I vs India showed exactly what he is capable of when he cheekily scooped one of India’s best bowlers, Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the fence.
Although it was a premeditated shot and Kumar, to the best of his ability, tried to stop him by following a moving Bairstow outside off, the swashbuckling batsman managed to collect a boundary.
Bairstow fell while completing the shot, but the job was done.

3rd T20I – Virat Kohli ramp shot off Jofra Archer
When it comes to Virat Kohli, classical stroke-making and timing is something the Indian captain is synonymous with. But the run machine, in the recent past has added some new variants to an already wide array of shots, keeping the demands of the shortest format in mind.
A ramp shot that Kohli played off Jofra Archer in the third T20I was a rare sight. But the Indian skipper timed it to perfection while attempting to up the ante during the India innings.
Off the last ball of the 19th over, Archer banged the ball in just a bit outside off to Kohli, who stepped away creating additional room for himself and lifted it over the in-field to collect four runs.

3rd T20I – Virat Kohli top edge off Jofra Archer
Luck is not something Virat Kohli depends on to collect his runs. But once in a while, the man with the maximum number of T20I runs in the world (3078) also gets lucky while trying to pull off an audacious shot.
During the third T20I, Kohli surprised himself, along with the England team after a top edge off his bat off Jofra Archer took the ball over the fence behind keeper Jos Buttler.
Attempting a flick off a Jofra Archer 142.2 km/hr delivery, Kohli closed the face of his bat early. Luckily for the Indian skipper, the ball hit the meaty part of the top edge and flew past behind the stumps. The pace of Archer helped the ball go all the way. The ball went high up and also travelled the distance, comfortably sailing over the boundary rope.
Along with Kohli, non-striker Hardik Pandya too enjoyed the shot and they shared a good laugh about it.

Pakistan optimistic about hosting India in 2023 Asia Cup: Ehsan Mani | Cricket News – Times of India

[ad_1]

KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ehsan Mani is optimistic about hosting India in the Asia Cup in 2023 and hopes the political relations between the two neighbouring countries would improve by then.
Mani informed that Sri Lanka will host the Asia Cup in 2022, ruling out any chances of the continental event being staged this year in June.
“In 2022 Sri Lanka will have it (Asia Cup) and in 2023 Pakistan will be hosting the regional event. I am optimistic that by time the political relations between the two countries would have improved and this would pave the way for the Indian team to come to Pakistan,” Mani said.
“In recent days there has been some positive signs through backdoor channels and hopefully the ice will melt in the relations,” he told the ‘Jang’ newspaper in an interview on Wednesday.
Mani said if the Indian team visits its neighbours, it will be a “big breakthrough” for Pakistan cricket.
Mani further said that the Asia Cup 2021 is unlikely to be held as Pakistan doesn’t have the time for it due to PSL 6 matches and India will also be busy with the ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand.
“Their is no question of the Asia Cup being held this year as we are very busy and don’t have time to spare this year.”
“There was a small window in June in which we are going to play the rest of the Pakistan Super League matches,” Mani said.
“The Indian team will play the final of the Test Championship against New Zealand. They have to go to England two weeks ago and stay in quarantine so the Indian team is also busy,” he added.
Mani said he hasn’t officially received any information on the reports of India sending its ‘B’ team for the Asia Cup.
“We have also heard about the Indian board wanting to send a B team to Asia Cup but no one has spoken about it to us.”
Mani said the revenue earned from the Asia Cup will be spend on promoting cricket in associate countries.
He said the Asian Cricket Council is guaranteed a proper income from the tournament only if all the teams take part in the regional competition.
Mani also disclosed that the ICC had assured the PCB about Pakistan’s participation in the World T20 this year in India.

NEW DELHI: The Indian cricket board (BCCI) will be squeezing in a couple of bilateral T20I series in October to help the Indian team prepare for the T20 World Cup. TOI has learnt that the board is in talks with South Africa and New Zealand in this regard.
“South Africa and New Zealand are scheduled to come to India to play a couple of T20I series before the World Cup. The modalities are to be finalized. The board is aware that the team needs to be in touch with the format before the Cup starts,” a senior BCCI official said.
India and South Africa already have an agreement to play a series in India to compensate for the cancelled series in March last year. India don’t have any T20Is scheduled after the ongoing series against England.
They are slated to travel to England for the World Test Championship final and a five-Test series after the IPL. India come back from England in mid-September. There are doubts over the the Asia Cup too as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will host the remainder of the Pakistan Super League.
India will also host New Zealand for a Test series after the T20 World Cup. The Indian team will then travel to South Africa for a full tour in December-January
