PANAJI: With just four months to go for the Tokyo Olympic Games, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has complained about a lack of coordination between the sports and health ministries over Covid-19 vaccination.
IOA secretary-general Rajiv Mehta said he is yet to get any update on the Covid-19 vaccination for the Olympics-bound athletes.
On Thursday, India’s 27-year-old Olympics hopeful in men’s 65kg freestyle wrestling Bajrang Punia revealed he got a shot of Covid-19 vaccine. Mehta says it’s a good thing Punia managed to have vaccination. But he demanded clarity on the process as there are others who are yet to get the vaccine.
“Players’ safety is important. The government is investing a huge amount of money to prepare elite athletes for the Olympics but IOA has no information regarding vaccination for the players and coaching staff,” Mehta told IANS.
Mehta says he had written a letter to the Union health ministry two months back asking for priority to the core group of athletes attending national camps spread across the country. “I’m yet to hear from the health department regarding vaccination for the players,” he added.
Earlier, in the first week of March, Union sports minister Kiren Rijiju had said his department is coordinating with the health ministry. “Top athletes preparing for the Olympics are our first priority, but the health ministry has to take a final decision,” the minister had said on March 7.
Besides Punia, three wrestlers namely Ravi Dahiya (57kg), Deepak Punia (86kg) and Vinesh Phogat (women 53kg) have got Tokyo Olympics quota, but the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has no clue about the vaccination for the three wrestlers.
“We haven’t got any information from either IOA or the sports ministry regarding vaccination dates for the Olympics-bound wrestlers,” said WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar.

If I want to win a medal in Olympics, have to keep everything else aside: Bajrang Punia | Tokyo Olympics News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: It doesn’t get bigger than the Olympics for an athlete and ace Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia is leaving no stone unturned as he looks to hit top gear in the home stretch of his preparations for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
Earlier this month, the World No.1 stopped using his social media handles and asked fans to keep showing him support as he gets battle ready for the Games. One of India’s biggest Olympic medal prospects, Bajrang on Thursday revealed regular use of social media was hampering his preparation. The men’s 65kg freestyle wrestler went on to add that nothing means more to him than preparing for the mega event.
“Nothing like that (if any particular incident prompted him to deactivate social media). But I felt that social media was disturbing my preparation. And the Olympics is the biggest event so I thought it would be better if I put all my focus on my preparation. If I want to win a medal in the Olympics, I have to keep everything aside for the coming months,” Bajrang told ANI.
“I can use social media after the Olympics also. So, instead of wasting my time, I decided to focus on preparations. In our free time we can work on our weakness too,” he added.
Bajrang’s love-affair with wrestling helped him regain the number one spot in the rankings after he clinched a second successive gold medal at the Matteo Pallicone Ranking Series last week.
The 27-year-old, who was playing his first international competition since the COVID-19 pandemic, made full use of the tournament to further prepare for the much-awaited Tokyo Olympics.
In January, Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had said that Bajrang, Vinesh Phogat, Deepak Punia, and Ravi Kumar can bag medals in the Olympics.
Asked if it would add to the expectations, Bajrang — who has won accolades in the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games as well as World Championship — said while the WFI President is right in expecting medals from them, the road to the Olympics will not be a bed of roses.
“I am trying my best, but it is easier said than done. My focus is only on doing hard work and for that, I am focusing on my training. The first time it has happened that four wrestlers have qualified. So, WFI president is right in expecting the medals from us as in recent past wrestlers have performed brilliantly,” the Indian wrestler said.
“And we are working hard to win a medal for the country, but it isn’t that easy. It’s not like that you go into the Olympics and the medal is assured, you have to work hard for it,” he quipped.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju has said Tokyo Olympics-bound athletes will be given priority for the coronavirus vaccine followed by other athletes. And Bajrang, who is the recipient of the Arjuna Award, Padma Shri, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, has already received his first dose of vaccine and will take the next jab after 28 days.
“I have taken the first dose of vaccine and would take the next dose after 28 days. I won’t tell anyone to take the vaccine or not take it. Athletes must consult their doctors and coaches before getting the first dose,” said Bajrang.
Diet plays a major role in an athletes’ build-up in the training and preparation and Bajrang, who hails from Khudan village in Haryana has tied up with Optimum Nutrition for all his dietary supplement requirements.
“Optimum Nutrition is the world’s best nutrition partner. I am using it for many years now and I found it very beneficial so I signed up with them. Good nutrition is very important for us as many supplements in the market are adulterated,” said Bajrang.
Bajrang earned a quota for the Tokyo Games in September 2019 after winning a bronze medal at the World Championships. The prestigious quadrennial event is set to take place from July 23 to August 8 this year. The Games were scheduled to take place last year but had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Freak injury forces Sonam Malik to pull out of Rome event; Deepak Punia, Ravi Dahiya also out | More sports News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: A freak head injury while training with Sakshi Malik has forced young wrestler Sonam Malik out of the UWW ranking series event in Rome while Tokyo-bound Deepak Punia and Ravi Dahiya have also pulled out of the tournament for different reasons.
The Indian squad left this morning for Rome, where the competition will begin on Thursday with Greco Roman wrestlers taking the mat first.
Country’s elite wrestlers like Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat are competing in the tournament.
Sonam, who had booked her seat in the Indian team in the 62kg after defeating Sakshi in the trials, got injured while training with the 2016 Olympic bronze medallist at the national camp in Lucknow, last week.
She did not even realise that she has got injured and only when blood started dripping from her head and spilled on the mat, both the wrestlers realised that something has gone awry.
“It was not fault of anyone. It happens in wrestling. It was not deliberate. You don’t want to concede any point and give your all. In that moment, injury could happen,” Sonam’s personal coach Ajmer Mailk told PTI.
“She got five stitches on her head. We brought her back after that and a local doctor examined her on Monday. The doctor said the injury has not healed and stitches can’t be removed, so she had to miss. She can’t compete with pain and injury,” he said.
Also missing, what would have been their first tournament since the coronavirus-forced break, are Ravi Dahiya (57kg), Deepak Punia (86kg) and Jitender Kinha (74kg).
Ravi injured his left knee during the national camp in Sonepat two weeks back, while Deepak is suspected to be down with either dengue or typhoid.
“My knee is still swollen. I was getting ready for this event but what to do. The swelling has come down considerably but the knee is not good enough for competition,” Ravi, who is one the three men’s wrestlers to have qualified for the Tokyo Games, told PTI.
Deepak, who won a silver in the 2019 World Championship in Nur Sultan, said a bout of fever put paid to his plans.
“It’s been one week I am down with fever. It’s not COVID. I have got my test done yesterday and awaiting report. It could be dengue or typhoid. There is lot of weakness and I have not trained for some time now,” said Deepak.
Jitender, who is one of the three entries in the 74kg along with Narsingh Pancham Yadav and Sandeep Mann, has suffered a shoulder injury and also pulled out of the event.
India had announced a 34-member squad for the tournament.
