IIM Calcutta’s 2021 MBA batch records 100 pc placement

KOLKATA: The 2021 MBA batch of IIM Calcutta recorded 100 per cent placement as all the 467 students who took part in the process got jobs, an institute statement said on Saturday.

The 2021 MBA batch of the XLRI-Xavier School of Management also achieved a similar feat as all the 358 students who sat for placements got jobs, a release by the Jamshedpur-based institute said.

The virtually-conducted placement week at IIM Calcutta, which ended on March 3, saw over 530 job offers for the 467 students.

Altogether 172 firms participated in the final placement process, with the average and median salaries rising to Rs 29 lakh and Rs 27 lakh per annum respectively, it said.

The consulting sector emerged as the top recruiter, with 149 students or 32 per cent of the total strength opting for them.

A total of 90 students were selected by top investment banking, asset management and private equity venture capital firms.

However, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic slowdown was visible in some sectors.

While consulting and finance roles continued to comprise roughly half of the placements as seen in previous years, general management and marketing roles came down from 30 per cent last year 2020 to 15 per cent in 2021.

In yet another reflection of the economy in 2020-21 and current trends, major software services and e-commerce platforms boosted their hiring from the campus.

Vinaya Patil, a second year MBA student said, “We were really worried about the final recruitment given the slowdown in the industrial activity in the last couple of years. Such placements for the whole batch feel surreal.”

Professor Abhishek Goel, chairperson of the Career Development and Placement Office said, “It was a tall order to get so many offers in the season while keeping the provision for multiple offers for a student. The students stepped up to the challenge and the outcome is an incredible feat.”

Director Professor Anju Seth said, “Achieving 100 per cent placements in an unprecedented time such as this is a true testament to the value of the IIM Calcutta experience and I thank the recruiters for their trust.”

The final recruitment process at XLRI saw the participation of 108 recruiters, with 370 domestic and international offers.

The median salary offered to the batch stood at Rs 23 lakh per annum and the average salary increased to Rs 25.08 lakh per annum.

Reopening England’s schools is step towards normality, PM Johnson says

[ad_1]

LONDON: The reopening of England’s schools to all pupils on Monday will mark the first step back towards normality, and is only possible because of the efforts of the public to bring Covid-19 infection rates down, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.

Johnson has announced a roadmap for lifting lockdown measures that sees schools open first, followed in later stages by the gradual easing of restrictions on mixing with other people and the re-opening of non-essential shops and other venues.

In the final stage, which will take place no earlier than June 21, the government hopes to remove all remaining legal limits on contact with others.

“The reopening of schools marks a truly national effort to beat this virus,” Johnson said.

“It is because of the determination of every person in this country that we can start moving closer to a sense of normality – and it is right that getting our young people back into the classroom is the first step.”

Each step on the roadmap will depend on the level of Covid-19 cases, the government has said. It hopes the pandemic can be contained by a vaccine programme that has already delivered a dose to nearly 22 million people, as well as regular testing.

Many secondary schools and colleges had already started inviting students for their first “lateral flow” Covid-19 tests, which give rapid results, with nearly 1 million conducted last week, the government said.

After three initial tests on site, students will be provided with two tests to use each week at home, it said, adding that nearly 57 million tests had been delivered to schools and colleges across the country.

US hiring surges in February as Democrats move on stimulus

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

WASHINGTON: The US economy saw better-than-expected hiring in February as businesses battered by the pandemic began recruiting employees again, even as Congress moved forward with President Joe Biden’s massive stimulus proposal despite Republican opposition.

Payrolls jumped by 379,000 last month, which was almost double expectations and pushed the unemployment rate down slightly to 6.2 percent, the Labor Department reported Friday, in a sign the world’s largest economy may finally be healing.

The vast majority of the gains were in the leisure and hospitality sector, which includes the bars and restaurants that were the first to close as business restrictions to stop Covid-19 began nearly a year ago.

Yet the economy was still short 9.5 million jobs compared to February 2020 before the pandemic began, the report said.

Biden said the data underscore the need for lawmakers to approve his plan for nearly $1.9 trillion in aid, and his economic advisers said the current pace of job gains mean it would take two years to recover to pre-pandemic levels.

“We can’t go one step forward and two steps backward,” Biden said at the White House. “The rescue plan is absolutely essential to turning this around.”

Biden’s proposal would be the third major stimulus package to help the economy weather the Covid-19 crisis, and includes a range of measures such as expanded aid for small businesses and the unemployed as well as stimulus checks for Americans.

However, the Republican opposition has argued the proposal is excessive, since the economy already has begun to recover.

The proposal faces a narrow path to passage in the Senate, which on Friday began the final debate, after one Republican demanded staff read the 628-page bill aloud, which took nearly 11 hours and concluded in the wee hours of the morning.

Unemployment in the United States was at a record low before the pandemic began but spiked to 14.7 percent last April after the Covid-19 restrictions were imposed.

Joblessness has declined in the months since, but at an increasingly slow pace.

The sentiment after the February report was much more upbeat, with Gregory Daco of Oxford Economics calling it “an early blossom for employment.”

But outside the strong hiring by restaurants and bars, other sectors saw smaller gains, with temporary health services adding 53,000 jobs and health care and social assistance adding 46,000.

Some industries saw further job losses, including education, which shed nearly 70,000 positions, and construction, which dropped 61,000.

And millions of people, many of them women trying to juggle schooling and childcare duties, have left the workforce entirely during the past year.

The labor force participation rate, gauging the share of the working-age population actually employed or looking for work, languished at 61.4 percent, the same level as in January and its lowest rate since the mid-1970s. For women 16 and older, the rate is 55.8 percent

And the Labor Department’s broadest measure of joblessness, reflecting workers who have left the labor force altogether, are discouraged from looking for work or cannot find a full-time position, was at 11.1 percent, indicating the depth of the employment crisis.

Meanwhile the unemployment rate for African Americans, who already faced higher joblessness than other groups, ticked up 0.7 percentage points to 9.9 percent.

“The core story here is that the reopening of services will be the dominant factor in the payroll numbers over the next few months,” said Ian Shepherdson of Pantheon Macroeconomics, who predicted March could see a payroll increase of one million jobs.

The report did little to change the dynamic in the Senate, where Democratic leader Chuck Schumer continued to press for passage of Biden’s proposal, arguing the economy remained in the doldrums.

“If you just look at a big number, you say, everything is getting a little better,” he said Friday. But “it’s not for the lower half of America.”

But Republican minority leader Mitch McConnell decried the bill as “a parade of left-wing projects” and said “our country’s already set for a roaring recovery.”

A day earlier, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell — who has steered clear of partisan politics but repeatedly called for more stimulus spending — warned that United States is facing a lengthy recovery and will not reach maximum employment this year.

“It’s a lot of ground we have to cover,” he said.

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), commonly known as Maharashtra Board will hold the class 10 and 12 board exams from April onwards, the Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad confirmed. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a section of parents and students was expecting the state to postpone the board exams, however, the state education minister clarified that the exams will be held as per schedule.

Earlier, the board had announced to hold Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) or class 12 exams from April 23 to May 21 and Secondary School Certificate (SSC) or class 10 from April 29 to May 20.

“Board examinations for classes 10th and 12th will be held as per the schedule declared. While the health of students is our primary concern, we also want to make sure that their academic year does not go to waste,” Maharashtra Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Every year, about 30 lakh students appear for the Maharashtra Board exams. The state board had announced to hold exams amid COVID-19 precautions considering the large number of students. Maintaining social distancing, wearing a mask will be mandatory for students and teachers.

Like many other central and state boards, Maharashtra too had announced to curtail the syllabus by 25 per cent for students appearing for board exams this year. The Board exams will be held on a reduced syllabus to make up for the loss of instructional hours. Schools across India were shut in March 2020 as one of the measures against the COVID-19. Schools across the country have now started to reopen but most of the academic session was spent in online mode.
