MUMBAI: The initial public offer (IPO) for Nazara Technologies, India’s first gaming company to list, was fully subscribed within an hour of opening on Wednesday. Driven by strong retail demand, the offer was subscribed four times by the end of the day.
Nazara, backed by billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, is raising Rs 583 crore through the IPO at a price of Rs 1,100-1,001 per share. According to bidding details on the BSE, the retail portion was subscribed nearly 17 times, while the non-institutional investor, also called the high net worth investor (HNI) part was subscribed about three times.
The employee part was subscribed 2.3 times and the institutional part just about 40% or 0.4 time. As is the norm in most IPOs, most of the bids are expected to come on Friday, the last day of the offer.

Its promoters and some of the existing shareholders are selling nearly 53 lakh shares in this public offer, the offer document showed. WestBridge Ventures, one of the early backers of the company, had exited its investments in January by selling its stake worth over Rs 500 crore to Plutus Wealth Management and its associates.
Earlier in 2017, WestBridge had sold stakes to an arm of domestic financial services group IIFL and Jhunjhunwala, who will not be diluting his minority stake in Nazara through the IPO.
This is the second attempt by the company to go public. In 2018, it had received Sebi’s nod to launch the IPO but it had not proceeded. The company is known for its games on World Cricket Championship, Chhota Bheem and Motu Patlu series.
In FY20, Nazara had posted a net loss of Rs 26 crore from a total income of Rs 262 crore. With a surge in gaming during the pandemic, the company said it has already recorded income of around Rs 207 crore in the first half of FY21. At 39%, gamified early learning segment makes up the majority revenue share for Nazara, followed by e-sports at 32%.
ICICI Securities, Nomura Financial Advisory, Jefferies India and IIFL Securities are managing the IPO.
On the same day two more IPOs — Laxmi Organic and Craftsman Automation — closed with strong subscriptions figures. While Laxmi Organic IPO was subscribed nearly 107 times, CraftsMan Automation was subscribed nearly four times. Two other IPOs — Kalyan Jewellers and Surodaya Small Finance Bank — will close this week.

Indians spend more than eight hours a week playing video games, study suggests

About a year since the first major lockdowns in India, Indians are hooked to the screens, be it for binge-watching shows or for playing video games. A new report by Limelight’s State of Online Gaming shows that gamers across the world spent 8 hours 27 minutes playing games each week on average. For Indian gamers, that number stood at 8 hours 36 minutes.

The reason for gaming uptimes across the world in the pandemic-struck year is pretty obvious. Gamers new and old likely took to their favourite titles as well as new ones while being stuck at home. This can also be attributed to the rising popularity of online multiplayer/social games that became increasingly popular over the last few years.

The report adds that consumers playing time went up by 14 percent during the pandemic compared to the year before.

The report also suggests that many people found new connections via online gaming. Data shows that about 53 per cent of gamers said they made new friends online through gaming in the past year. About 36 percent of gamers also called the ability to interact with other players during gaming extremely important.

Rise of ‘binge gaming’ and new gamers

Binge gaming has emerged as a phenomenon, with over 60 percent of Indian gamers reportedly having spent over 3 hours consecutively playing games. From 2020 to 2021, the average for binge gaming in India has increased from 4.1 hours to 5.5 hours. The change is being attributed to the people staying home for longer during the pandemic.

The report also stated that binge-gaming reached an all-time high during the pandemic. The average gamer has played video games consecutively for five hours and six minutes, which is a 13 percent increase from last year. Further, young gamers ages 18 to 25 have binge-gamed for the longest at an average of nearly six hours. In India, gamers who spend anywhere between 5 to 15 hours binge-gaming account for a whopping 54 percent of gamers.

The report also suggests that the lack of social engagement through the pandemic also provided an opportunity for more people to get into gaming. About 64 percent of global gamers reportedly said they started playing video games in the past year.

Demand for faster speeds and next-gen consoles

The report also stated that gamers demanded faster performance. Better performance was extremely important to 47 percent of gamers. Further, over 94 percent of Indian gamers said the process of downloading games was frustrating.

Need for better performance also translated into more demand for next-gen consoles. About 74 percent of gamers were interested in purchasing a new console. 32 percent of these gamers wanted a new console wanted one for the updated hardware while 31 percent wanted faster gameplay.

Gaming now a popular spectator sport and the top entertainment choice

The Limelight report also states that over half (56 percent) of global gamers said they’ve started watching others play video games in the past year. The average gamer now reportedly spends two hours and 48 minutes each week watching others play video games online. Meanwhile, gamers in India spend the most time of any country surveyed, at five hours and 24 minutes on average every week.

Playing video games is now also the top entertainment choice for many people, suggests the report.  Three in five (62 percent) gamers said they preferred playing video games over watching a movie or TV show. India leads the chart in this case, with over 75 percent preferring to play games over watching/streaming shows and movies on a TV or OTT platform.

Note that the “State of Online Gaming 2021” report is based on responses from 4,000 consumers in China, Germany, India, Indonesia, South Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam, ages 18 and older who play video games.

Qualcomm has announced the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound platform for smartphones and audio products, with the focus on improving the experience of music streaming, phone calls and gaming with wireless audio products. Qualcomm says that the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound platform is optimized, in terms of the hardware and software, for better Bluetooth connectivity even in environments with radio frequency congestion, low latency that would smoothen the experience of gaming as well as video conferencing, allow easy pairing and multiple connections as well as reduce the battery consumption on smartphones along with the paired wireless earbuds and headphones.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound platform will be able to deliver twice the audio bitrates (this will support high-resolution 24-bit 96kHz audio), twice the audio sampling frequency for voice calls and as much as 45% lower latency for audio and video sync for gaming and video usage (that’s as low as 89 milliseconds), as compared with most current smartphones and wireless earbuds combinations. The hardware side of the Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound platform comes together as a triple branched implementation. For smartphones and mobile devices, this will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform along with the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 System, Qualcomm Aqstic Audio Codec and the Qualcomm Aqstic Smart Speaker Amp. For headphones and wireless earbuds, the platform brings along the Qualcomm QCC515x Bluetooth Audio SoC, the Qualcomm QCC514x Bluetooth Audio SoC and the Qualcomm QCC3056 Bluetooth Audio SoC.

These will combine with audio and voice software solutions such as Qualcomm TrueWireless Mirroring, Qualcomm Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Qualcomm aptX Adaptive Audio, Qualcomm aptX Voice Audio and the Qualcomm HDR & 3D Audio Record. “The human ear is highly sensitive to glitches, latencies and other challenges which commonly occur when streaming music, video conferencing, or gaming over wireless connections. By focusing end-to-end, we are looking to deliver innovations to solve common consumer pain-points across virtually all audio interaction points,” said James Chapman, vice president and general manager, Voice, Music and Wearables, Qualcomm Technologies International Ltd.

Brands are already lining up the incoming launches with the Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound integration. Smartphone maker Xiaomi as well as audio brand Audio-Technica have confirmed as much. “Xiaomi is excited to be the first mobile manufacturer to bring Snapdragon Sound to devices. Snapdragon Sound will bring new high quality, seamless, low-latency audio experiences to our customers everywhere and provide better sound while engaging in voice calls, video conferencing, gaming or music listening,” says Lei Zhang, vice president of Mi Smartphone and general manager of Hardware R&D, Xiaomi. “We believe that with Snapdragon Sound we get closer to our mutual vision of providing wired quality sound, wirelessly and are excited to be one of the first manufacturers to get our products to consumers,” says Kotaro Narihara, director, general manager of marketing headquarters, Audio-Technica.

The first line of products with Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound should be rolling out later in the year, with the solution now available for OEMs now. Qualcomm says it’ll be easy for users to know which products have this integrated, because they will carry with Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound logo. The company also plans to add the solution for PCs, smart watches and smart glasses soon.
