Home side has trialled several options with an eye on T20 WC, but needs its strongest XI in decider; England happy with chance to experience high-stakes situations

In its exercise to get the team composition right ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup later this year, India has been in the mood to experiment in this series against England.

New players such as Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Rahul Chahar have got their chances, while experienced men, including Rohit Sharma, have enjoyed some rest.

Top-order concerns

But come Saturday, with the fate of the series on the line in the fifth T20I, India will look to come out all guns blazing with its strongest eleven.

It is only at the top of the order that the home side has some concerns. K.L. Rahul made 14 on Thursday, to go with scores of 1, 0 and 0 in the first three outings. His partner Rohit Sharma, with scores of 15 and 12, has only managed marginally better returns.

New-find Suryakumar lends a confident feel to the middle-order. In his maiden international batting outing on Thursday, the Mumbai cricketer set the stage on fire with a fine 31-ball 57.

Suryakumar’s first-ball six off Jofra Archer, made easy by his early anticipation of a short ball, was the result of his fearless and cerebral approach.

“My plan was clear. I’ve seen him (Archer) in the last two-three seasons in the IPL; I’ve watched all of his international games as well. I know the plans he has when a new batter comes in. I knew he would bowl short to me,” Suryakumar, the Man-of-the-Match, said after India’s victory.

This international spotlight has been a long time coming for Suryakumar, who missed out on the Australia tour despite an outstanding run in IPL 2020. The extended wait to wear the India cap only made the big occasion sweeter. “The passion for this game has always kept me going. I kept working hard — that’s the only option I had. I kept working on my skills, fitness and ticked all the boxes. I knew that when the time is right, the opportunity will come, and I’ll grab it with both hands. “There were some butterflies in the stomach, but I was also happy to know that I would bat at number three. I bat in the same spot for Mumbai Indians, so I knew the situation very well,” the 30-year-old said. Suryakumar got his chance because another talented rookie, Ishan, was forced out due to a groin strain. If Ishan is deemed fit, it remains to be seen whether the team management can accommodate both players in the eleven.

England, on the back of Ben Stokes’ 23-ball 46, came close to wrapping up the series 3-1 on Thursday.

At a media interaction, Stokes acknowledged the disappointment of losing a tight game, but added that there was a lot to look forward to.

“We go into the fifth T20I with a huge amount of pressure on us. That’s great for us, especially with the T20 World Cup coming up. The more pressure situations we are put in, the better for us,” Stokes said.

The squads: India: Virat Kohli (Capt.), Rohit Sharma, K.L. Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Rahul Tewatia, Rahul Chahar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini, T. Natarajan and Shardul Thakur.

England: Eoin Morgan (Capt.), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley and Mark Wood.

Match starts at 7 p.m.

India vs England | Suryakumar, Krunal and Prasidh get maiden ODI call-ups

Sea change in India’s 50-over squad compared to the one which took on Australia down under

Aggressive batsman Suryakumar Yadav, all-rounder Krunal Pandya and pacer M. Prasidh Krishna have received maiden call-ups for the ODI series against England.

The trio was included in the 18-member squad for the three ODIs, starting March 23, announced on Friday.

While Suryakumar walked away with the Man-of-the-Match award in his maiden hit in international cricket during Thursday’s fourth T20I, Krunal, Hardik’s elder brother, has been rewarded for his stellar show in the recently-concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy. Prasidh, who was billed a potential “surprise package” by India captain Virat Kohli last year, has been picked after proving his fitness on the domestic circuit. Besides the trio, the squad wears a different look from the one that took on Australia last year. Pacers Jasprit Bumrah (marriage break), Mohammed Shami (injured) and Navdeep Saini have been excluded along with batsmen Mayank Agarwal, Manish Pandey and Sanju Samson.

Rohit Sharma, who was unfit for the ODI series in Australia, has been recalled along with pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Bhuvneshwar, having regained full fitness and impressed in the ongoing T20I series against England, will thus be the leader of the pace attack that also features T. Natarajan, Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj.

The squad: Virat Kohli (Capt.), Rohit Sharma (vice-capt.), Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant (wk), K.L. Rahul (wk), Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Krunal Pandya, Washington Sundar, T. Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur.

The itinerary (all games in Pune):

First ODI: March 23; Second: March 26; Third: March 28.

All matches start at 1.30 p.m.

‘Surprise package’ Prasidh Krishna ready to deliver | Cricket News – Times of India

BENGALURU: When Karnataka pacer Prasidh Krishna was recuperating from a side strain sustained during the 2019 Vijay Hazare Trophy semifinals, India skipper Virat Kohli, after India’s T20 win against Sri Lanka in January last year, surprised many.
Kohli said: “I think one guy will be a surprise package going to Australia, someone who can bowl with pace and has bounce. Prasidh Krishna has done well in the domestic arena as well.”

Kohli was referring to the T20 World Cup which was scheduled in Australia this year but will now be played in India.
While Australia will host the T20 World Cup in 2022, the surprise package was delivered on Friday, with Prasidh being named in the team for the three-match ODI series starting in Pune next week.
The maiden national call-up for the 25-year-old comes at a time when Prasidh is rediscovering himself as a bowler and will be a huge confidence booster for the lanky bowler.
Prasidh, who made his white ball debut for the state in the 2016-17 Vijay Hazare Trophy, had to warm the bench for a while with Karnataka boasting a competent pace unit in R Vinay Kumar, Abhimanyu Mithun, Sreenath Arvind and Ronit More.

When opportunity came calling, he made the most of it. In Karnataka’s Vijay Hazare title-winning campaigns in 2017-18 & 2019-20 he picked up 34 wickets and this season, he ended up with 14 wickets in Karnataka’s run which ended in the semifinals earlier this month.
Speaking to TOI about his maiden call-up, an elated Prasidh said, “It is exciting to be a part of this Indian team. It feels great to even think that I will get to rub shoulders with stalwarts who are part of the best team in the world. I know the team encourages youngsters a lot. Also, I’m looking forward to picking the brains of the players and the coaching staff.”
Prasidh is determined not to allow pressure to get to him. “It is an important series for me, especially since this is my maiden call-up. I’m going to focus on giving my best while enjoying the game,” he stated.
Prasidh is among the clutch of IPL discoveries who have earned the national team call-ups. On that count, he is grateful for the platform Kolkata Knight Riders provided.
KKR picked Prasidh as a late injury replacement for Kamlesh Nagarkoti in 2017 and have persisted with him since. In 24 matches for the two-time champions, he has claimed 18 wickets with 4/30 being his best.
Acknowledging the franchise’s contribution, Prasidh pointed out, “Kolkata Knight Riders gave me the first big platform and I’m grateful for that. They saw something in me and encouraged me to push the boundaries and challenge myself. They have really looked after me very well.”

AHMEDABAD: England players have been fined 20 per cent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate against India in the fourth T20 International here.
ICC elite panel match referee Javagal Srinath imposed the sanction after Eoin Morgan’s side was ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players were fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, the ICC said in a release on Friday.
India won the match by eight runs on Thursday night to level the five-match series at 2-2, paving the way for a winners-take-it-all final game at the same venue on Saturday.

Suryakumar Yadav: India vs England: Suryakumar Yadav’s controversial dismissal sparks ‘soft signal’ debate | Cricket News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: India captain Virat Kohli has called for changes to the ‘soft-signal’ rule for outfield catches after team mate Suryakumar Yadav was controversially dismissed in Thursday’s Twenty20 International against England.
Yadav smashed 57 before his pull shot sailed to deep square leg where Dawid Malan took a tumbling low catch. As England celebrated, on-field umpire K N Ananthapadmanabhan gave the soft signal of ‘out’ before sending the decision to TV umpire Virender Sharma.
On-field umpires give a ‘soft signal’ based on their intuition when there is a tight call, making a decision before asking the TV umpire to look at it again from different angles in slow motion.

TV umpires must uphold the soft signal decision unless they have conclusive evidence to overturn it.
Replays of Thursday’s incident suggested the ball might have touched the grass but Sharma was not fully convinced and upheld Ananthapadmanabhan’s decision.
Kohli said during the presentation ceremony it was impossible for an on-field umpire to clearly see whether a catch taken in the deep was clean or not.
“Why can’t there be an, ‘I don’t know’ call from the umpire?” Kohli said after India levelled the five-match series at 2-2.
“Why does it have to be conclusive? These things sometimes can really change the course of a whole game.

“You want these things ironed out as much as possible, keep this game simple, keep it linear, have one set of rules which are not grey areas.”
Former India Test player VVS Laxman wondered what was the point of “… watching so many replays using top class technology and still go by the soft signal …”
“I think this rule needs to be revisited and changed,” Laxman tweeted.

Former England spinner Graeme Swann called it a “stinking decision” while seamer Stuart Broad echoed Kohli’s view.
“It’s the ‘soft signal’ which is odd. Hard for off field umpire to overturn …” Broad tweeted.

India and England play the decider at Ahmedabad on Saturday.

India vs England: Getting under the pump before T20 World Cup is good for us, says Ben Stokes | Cricket News – Times of India

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

AHMEDABAD: England star all-rounder Ben Stokes says losing a tight game like the fourth Twenty20 against India on Thursday and going into a ‘winners-take-all’ contest will only prepare them better for the World Cup as they will get used to pressure situations.
Eyeing an unassailable 3-1 lead, the Eoin Morgan-led side faltered in a tricky chase of 186 to go down to India by eight runs.
The fifth T20I, scheduled for Saturday, is now like a summit clash.
“Whoever wins that game wins the series so you know that’s great for us as a team, and especially with the T20 World Cup coming up, the more pressure situations we get into as a team, the more we will benefit from it,” Stokes told reporters during the post-match interaction on Thursday.

“The more pressure that we get under as a team, the more that’s going to do for us in that World Cup, because World Cups can end very quickly. Every game is a big game.”
Stokes nearly carried England home with his 46 off 23 balls but he and captain Morgan were dismissed off consecutive Shardul Thakur deliveries at the start of the 17th over from where it was tilted in home team’s favour.
“One of us have got to be there till the end. Leaving that many runs for our bottom order to have to deal with obviously is less than ideal. In that situation, one of our middle-order needs to be there till the end to get it over the line. It’s always more frustrating when you feel like you’ve got the game in your hands.”

01:184th T20I: India beat England by 8 runs to level series

4th T20I: India beat England by 8 runs to level series

“Rather than going away and being too down on myself you got to look at these things and assess them and learn from them. You know we’ve got a T20 World Cup coming up and there’s no doubt it will put in a similar situation at some point in that tournament so these are all great learning experiences for us as players,” he said.
Talking about Saturday’s game, he said: “It is a final because if we don’t win then we lose the series, and we don’t want to lose the series.”
“We want to make a habit of winning. As I said the more situations we get put into where we’ve got pressure on us and we keep prevailing, that’s just got to do with the world of good.”
The Morgan-led England have been in brilliant form in the white ball cricket since their ODI World Cup victory in 2019.

“Getting into any of our white ball teams now is a huge honour, purely because of how well we have played over the last four-five years.
“Even the guys who are in the XI know that there’s guys on the bench, knocking that door down, so competition for places in this team is real, real healthy and it really drives everybody to get better and better every day,” Stokes said.
In the first three T20Is the team that has won the toss, has chosen to bat second and won but the latest match bucked that trend.
“This is the best wicket we’ve had in this series. We knew that straightaway after the first couple of overs with Jofra and Woody. The wicket didn’t have that sort of up and down, bounce where it did the first couple of games. The bowl skidded on nicely.
“You got to give credit to India and the way they bowled. They realised quite early that taking the pace off the ball and digging into the wicket was actually quite tough,” he concluded.

Trying to learn as much as we can in this series before the T20 World Cup, says Eoin Morgan | Cricket News – Times of India

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

AHMEDABAD: After losing the closely fought fourth T20I against India by eight-run here at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday, England skipper Eoin Morgan said that they are learning from this series before they return to play the T20I World Cup later this year.
A blistering half-century from Suryakumar Yadav, followed by a brilliant performance from the bowlers helped India clinch the series-levelling win.
The visiting skipper termed it the “closest game” of the series so far and added that India deserved to win.
“It’s definitely been the closest game so far and India played much better and thoroughly deserve the win. There was a lot more dew throughout the game and the game ebbed and flowed a lot. The swing and momentum of the game went back to India and the last over made it interesting. We are just trying to learn as much as we can in this series. The progression to the World Cup in seven months is important,” Morgan said after the match.
“We were very happy at the halfway stage knowing that dew was around. The ball didn’t turn much and we were in control. In overs 16 and 17 we lost three wickets in eight balls and that set us back. It just leaves too much for the bowlers against a top-quality side. Bairstow and Stokes got themselves in. Starting fresh isn’t easy, but they managed to negate that. Their experience took over and they took their options. Frustrating though then in the end to not get through despite the experience we have. We really want to play in must-win games like these. Certainly all to play for now. Playing away from home and winning will be great,” he added.
Shardul Thakur brought the hosts back in the game as he scalped two crucial wickets of Stokes and Morgan on successive balls in the 16th over. Thakur picked Stokes (46) on the first ball and on the next delivery, he removed Morgan (4) to leave the visitors reeling at 140/6.
Thakur returned with the figures of 3-42 in his four overs. While Hardik Pandya and Deepak Chahar claimed two scalps each to restrict England at 177/8 in 20 overs.

India vs England: Rohit Sharma just wanted me to back my instinct, says Shardul Thakur | Cricket News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: After bagging the crucial wickets and bowling the final over of the fourth T20I which India won by eight runs against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium, pacer Shardul Thakur said that Rohit Sharma advised him to follow his instincts while bowling in the crunch situation.
With this win, India have levelled the series 2-2. Thakur brought the hosts back in the game as he scalped two crucial wickets of Stokes and Morgan on successive balls in the 16th over.

“I am enjoying myself, and bowling in times when batsmen are going hard at us. Hardik had some plans but Rohit just wanted me to back my instinct. He mentioned one side of the ground is shorter and just asked me to keep it in mind and asked me to apply myself,” Thakur said after the match.

The 29-year-old seamer admitted that it was difficult to control the wet ball because of the dew on the ground.

“There was a lot of dew in this match, which wasn’t true of the last three matches. They were swinging hard in the last over, and it was important to bowl a couple of dot balls and then the game was sealed. The dry ball worked for them, and when I tried a slow bouncer it was in the slot and it went for six. If we bowled the slow ones on the stumps it would’ve been easy to hit, so the target was to keep it away from their power zone. If the ball is drier, it’s easier to grip for the knuckle ball,” the pacer added.
The series decider to be played on Saturday at the same venue.

Suryakumar Yadav: India vs England: Not disappointed with my dismissal, few things not in my control, says Suryakumar Yadav | Cricket News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: His terrific innings in only his second international outing was cut short by a controversial dismissal, but Suryakumar Yadav took it on his chin, saying few things are “not in my control”.
Suryakunar smashed a blistering 57 off 31 balls to set up India’s series-levelling eight-run win against England in the fourth T20 International against England here on Thursday night.
Just when he was looking to pile on England’s misery, the Mumbai dasher was given out in a controversial fashion.

“Regarding my dismissal, not really disappointed because few things are not in my control. Things that are in my control, I try to control that and things outside that, are not in my hands,” Suryakumar said at the post-match press conference on Thursday.
He began his foray in international cricket with a stunning six off England pacer Jofra Archer.
“I am very happy with the way the things went. My plan was really clear when I went out to bat. I have seen Archer in the last two-three seasons in the IPL, I watched all of his games, whenever a new batsman comes in, what plans he has, obviously I had my plans as well,” added Suryakumar.

“It was a great opportunity for me to bat at number three for India. Yeah, I knew he will come a little short at me.”
During India’s innings, two umpiring seemed to have gone against the hosts. Suryakumar was dismissed by Sam Curran.
The right-handed batsman tried to play a shot but Dawid Malan ended up taking the catch.
Replays indicated that the ball might have hit the ground when Malan was taking the catch.

However, as the soft signal was out, the third umpire upheld the on-field call citing “lack of conclusive evidence”.
Suryakumar was not included in India’s squad for the white-ball series against Australia despite a stellar IPL and domestic season.

Speaking about how he prepared for the series against England, Suryakumar said, “I have always said that the passion for this game has always kept me going.” “I kept working hard, I only knew that I have one option and I try to do things that are in my control. I kept on working on my skills and fitness and I knew that when the time is right, an opportunity will come and I will grab it with both hands.
