NEW DELHI: Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday said that the ministry is planning to send the Indian Olympic contingent in advance for the Tokyo Games so that the athletes get acclimatise to the conditions.
“Only three months are left for the Olympic Games. Athletes are giving their best to book their seats for the Olympics and do well for the country. The ministry is also planning to send the Olympic team in advance so that they would get time to adjust to the climate over there. They will be able to train in those conditions which will help them during the competition,” Rijiju told ANI.
“Arrangements are being made for our athletes and their team (technical), they will be put up in different locations in Japan. Right now, some of them are still participating in tournaments. There are some qualification events happening.
“But we have made a detailed plan for it. I have spoken to the Indian Olympic Association and we have a committee headed by me to plan and prepare for the Olympics and the entire management. The athletes will be able to train and practice wherever they will stay,” he added.
Ace wrestler Bajrang Punia on Thursday said that he has already received his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. This has led to the raising of a few eyebrows as there hasn’t been any official announcement on starting of vaccination of Olympic-bound athletes.
However, Rijiju said Punia wanted to feel secure and that’s why he went ahead and got himself vaccinated.
“For vaccination, we are in discussion with the health ministry. He (Bajrang) must have thought that because there is a delay, he wanted to be secure. I cannot make any comment right now but we are worried about the safety of all the players,” Rijiju said.
The Tokyo Olympics, originally slated to take place last year but got postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, will be held from July 23 to August 8, this year.

IOA complains of no information on COVID vaccination from government | Tokyo Olympics News – Times of India

PANAJI: With just four months to go for the Tokyo Olympic Games, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has complained about a lack of coordination between the sports and health ministries over Covid-19 vaccination.
IOA secretary-general Rajiv Mehta said he is yet to get any update on the Covid-19 vaccination for the Olympics-bound athletes.
On Thursday, India’s 27-year-old Olympics hopeful in men’s 65kg freestyle wrestling Bajrang Punia revealed he got a shot of Covid-19 vaccine. Mehta says it’s a good thing Punia managed to have vaccination. But he demanded clarity on the process as there are others who are yet to get the vaccine.
“Players’ safety is important. The government is investing a huge amount of money to prepare elite athletes for the Olympics but IOA has no information regarding vaccination for the players and coaching staff,” Mehta told IANS.
Mehta says he had written a letter to the Union health ministry two months back asking for priority to the core group of athletes attending national camps spread across the country. “I’m yet to hear from the health department regarding vaccination for the players,” he added.
Earlier, in the first week of March, Union sports minister Kiren Rijiju had said his department is coordinating with the health ministry. “Top athletes preparing for the Olympics are our first priority, but the health ministry has to take a final decision,” the minister had said on March 7.
Besides Punia, three wrestlers namely Ravi Dahiya (57kg), Deepak Punia (86kg) and Vinesh Phogat (women 53kg) have got Tokyo Olympics quota, but the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has no clue about the vaccination for the three wrestlers.
“We haven’t got any information from either IOA or the sports ministry regarding vaccination dates for the Olympics-bound wrestlers,” said WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar.

2048 Olympics: Arvind Kejriwal should have discussed Delhi’s plan for Olympic bid with IOA first: Narinder Batra | More sports News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Reacting to Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s statement of Delhi making a bid for hosting Olympics in 2048, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narinder Batra on Wednesday said that Kejriwal should have discussed the matter with IOA first.
“It’s a welcome step if they’re thinking of it but at the same time, Arvind Kejriwal should have been in discussion with IOA first. They can send an expression of interest but bidding is a very different process. I will say it’s a welcome move but Delhi alone can’t stage the Olympics. Multiple cities have to be involved, there are many things involved behind any competition,” Batra told ANI.
“In my point of view, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Complex in Motera is the best option for opening and closing ceremony of Olympics as of now,” he added.
Batra also said that he feels that India can definitely host the Olympics before 2048.
“One more thing I feel (is) that before 2048, we will certainly have one Olympics in India,” said Batra.

Kejriwal had said that the national capital will bid to be the host of the Olympics in 2048, adding that a vision has been provided for the same in the Delhi Budget presented on Tuesday.
“A vision has been provided in the Budget (Delhi Budget) that 2048 Olympic games should be held in Delhi. Delhi will bid for the 2048 Olympics. We will take up whatever infrastructure and other necessities that are needed to be created for it,” he said.
“Delhi’s finance minister Manish Sisodia has made a great budget. The budget was prepared keeping in mind people of all sections of the society,” Kejriwal said.
Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday presented a budget worth Rs 69,000 crore for the financial year 2021-22 and said that the Aam Aadmi Party-led government aims to increase the per capita income of the national capital to Singapore’s level by 2047.
