JioPages for Android TV launched globally, supports 8 Indian regional languages

JioPages web browser has made its way to Android TV via Google Play, the company announced today. The web browser was earlier available on TV only via Jio set-top box but no it will be available on Android TV users worldwide. Jio says in its media release that the browser will provide “an enhanced browsing experience through faster engine migration, best-in-class webpage rendering, faster page load, efficient media streaming and encrypted connection”.

At the homepage of the web browser, the main options include Home, Videos, News and Quicklinks. Jio says that its video section has curated content including over 10,000 videos categorised in more than 20 categories including music, kids, lifestyle, news and others. This feature has been introduced to ease the process of content discovery on TV.

The browser will support up to eight regional Indian languages including Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Bengali. The news feed can also be customised by the user as per preferred regional languages. In addition to watching trending news on the browser, it also allows downloading of e-newspapers. To read these e-newspapers, it has an in-built PDF reader.

Like on most web browsers, users can bookmark a particular website and access their browsing history. Apart from the standard browsing mode, it also features an Incognito mode to browse privately and prevent storing of browsing history on the system.

The web browser was previously made available for Android smartphone users on Play Store in 2018. The Made in India app takes 46 MB of space, has over 10 million downloads on the platform and a rating of 4.2 on the Play Store.

The JioPages internet browser has been launched on the Google Play Store on Android TV. The web browser is the first made in India web browser that is designed exclusively for TV. So far, JioPages was available only on the Jio set-top box platforms, but now, is available across the entire world of Android TV smart TVs on Google Play Store, for TVs. The web browser for television goes beyond just internet browsing, to offer a rich diversity of features right into the smart TV platforms.

The JioPages browser on Android TV offers a curated videos content section with over 10,000 videos across 20 categories. The TV browser also supports eight vernacular languages, which include Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Bangla. Choosing a regional language on JioPages will also customise the browser news feed and offer users content in these local Indian languages. JioPages also has two browsing modes – a standard default, and a second private browsing mode, labelled Incognito.

Outside the home and videos tabs, the JioPages browser also offers trending news pieces, which are all available either in English, or in any of the vernacular languages on the platform. This will allow users who own Android TV smart TVs to read news content in the large display size format. From this mode, users can also download e-newspapers through the TV browser to read latest content every morning from the comfort of TV sets. Another neat feature is the Quick Links tab, which allows Android TV users on JioPages to access the top, most visited sites in a single click.

JioPages also has an integrated download manager to access all downloaded data, and a bookmarks and history management tab to access your bookmarked webpages and sites easily, and/or delete your browsing history, giving the onus of privacy back to your hands. JioPages on Android TV is available for download for users across the world right now.
