Claiming Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had betrayed the people of West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress chairperson and accused her of brutality towards political opponents.

“Mamata didi runs a school of brutality where tolabaji (extortion), cut money, syndicate and anarchy form syllabus,” Mr. Modi said, while addressing a rally in Kharagpur.

During his speech, the Prime Minister referred to the 2018 panchayat polls in the State and said that the whole world watched how the democratic rights of the people were curtailed by not allowing them to take part in elections.

“This time, Didi will not be allowed to trample on democratic rights. What the Trinamool Congress used to do in the previous election will not be allowed this time,” Mr. Modi said.

He raised slogans such as Bhoy noi, Sudu joi (No fear only victory) and Is Baar BJP Sarkar (This time, it will be a BJP government).

The Prime Minister also showered praise on State BJP president Dilip Ghosh, saying that the party was proud to have a chief like him who withstood several attacks at the hands of the Trinamool.

Mr. Modi also pointed out that about 130 of the BJP’s cadre had been killed by Trinamool workers.

Referring to Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee hailing from the State of West Bengal, the Prime Minister claimed that the BJP was the only party of Bengal in true sense.

“The DNA of the BJP has the DNA of Syama Prasad Mookerjee,” he added.

The remark by the Prime Minister is aimed to counter the campaign of the Trinamool that BJP is an outside party.

Mr. Modi also took a swipe at the Trinamool slogan Khela Hobe (The game will be played).

Didi is saying Khela Hobe. Entire Bengal is saying ‘Khela Sesh Hobe Vikas Hobe (Game over, now there will be development),” he said.

The Prime Minister said that only a double-engine government of the BJP, with the party in power in both Delhi and Bengal, could bring the State out of distress.

Targeting Trinamool leader and Ms. Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, the Prime Minister said that while in the entire country there were attempts to ease out processes and have a single-window system, in Bengal there was another unique single-window system.

“That single-window system in Bengal is Bhaipho [nephew] window,” he said.

CBI, ED summon six Bengal top officers, TMC cries foul | India News – Times of India

KOLKATA: Two central agencies on Friday called six Bengal government officials for questioning as part of their ongoing probes in three separate cases, prompting the Trinamool Congress to call it an example of “brazen misuse of power” by the central government.
The officials called for questioning next week, by the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation, are state security advisor Surajit Kar Purakayastha (Saradha case); principal secretary in chief minister’s office Gautam Sanyal and state additional chief secretary BP Gopalika (Metro Dairy share transfer and disinvestment case); GST special commissioner (Durgapur) Arun Prasad, Kolkata Police additional commissioner Laxmi Narayan Meena and West Bengal Police officer Partha Ghosh (illegal coal-mining case).
The fresh notices to these six officials came on Friday, when the ED questioned Trinamool Congress candidates Vivek Gupta (Jorasanko) and Madan Mitra (Kamarhati) in the Saradha case. Another central agency, the National Investigation Agency, questioned another Trinamool candidate, Imani Biswas (Suti), in connection with the February Nimtita railway station blast case.
The Trinamool Congress saw political vendetta in the renewed activity of central government agencies in poll-bound Bengal. “The BJP is so brazen about all this now. They don’t even bother to make a pretence of fair play. This is classic Modi-Shah tactic,” Trinamool Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien said. Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, too, had urged the Election Commission to probe “the role of central agencies in Bengal” while releasing her party’s manifesto; it followed an ED notice to state home secretary HK Dwivedi to appear before it in connection with the Metro Dairy case.
A state official admitted the notices had come. “It seems to be part of a political carpet-bombing to keep the state administration under pressure,” he said. Another official close to the developments said there was no question of not cooperating with the agencies. “All things known will be shared. The reference points for the central agencies are, anyway, mostly out in the public domain,” he said.
Kamarhati Trinamool candidate Mitra on Friday said he had already submitted all necessary documents to the ED and there was nothing more to provide.
“I have come because they have asked me to do that. I have always cooperated with the agency,” he said.
The CBI and the ED are probing the Saradha Ponzi scam, which broke in 2013 and in which thousands of investors were alleged to have lost about Rs 2,400 crore. The ED is probing the Metro Dairy case, in which there have been allegations that the Bengal government sold its 47% stake in the firm at a lower-than-market value. The CBI is probing the illegal coal-mining case; it has accused several central government officials and Bengal residents of colluding to “cheat” central government agencies in coal auctions. Prime accused Anup Majhi has moved the Supreme Court, raising jurisdiction issues.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tore into West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party TMC as he played on the “Khela Hobe” slogan to say: “Didi, O Didi – you played for 10 years. Now the game will end and development will begin”.

Speaking in Purulia ahead of the eight-phase Bengal election starting March 27, the prime minister targeted Banerjee over “corruption and lack of development”.

“Didi says khela hobe, BJP says jobs; Didi says khela hobe, BJP says education; Didi says khela hobe, BJP says development; Didi says khela hobe, BJP says the rise of women; Didi says khela hobe, BJP says jobs; Didi says khela hobe, BJP says you will get a pucca house, clean water and taps in every home,” said the PM.

PM Modi also accused Banerjee of encouraging Maoists and dubbed the TMC ‘Transfer My Commission’ Party.

Declaring that the countdown for the defeat of the Trinamool Congress in Bengal had begun, the prime minister said in Bengali: “Atyachar onek korechho Didi. Ebar Ma Durgar ashirbadey korbay tomaye oporosto (You have oppressed people for long. Now with blessings of Ma Durga, you will be defeated).”

NEW DELHI: On March 27, the day West Bengal goes to polls in the first phase, PM Narendra Modi will be in Orakhandi in Bangladesh offering prayers at the Matua temple, a move redolent with intense political symbolism.
Modi will also offer prayers at the Jessoreshwari Kali temple at Satkhira outside Dhaka. Both these events are intended to resonate with voters in West Bengal. On his first visit in 2015, Modi had visited Dhakeshwari temple and offered prayers there, but then Mamata Banerjee had also accompanied him on his trip to Bangladesh. This time the two are locked in an intense political battle for Bengal.
On March 26, Modi will hold talks with Sheikh Hasina and call on President Mohammed Abdul Hamid. He would hold a public event at the National Parade Ground on March 26, Bangladesh foreign minister A K Abdul Momen told journalists. Modi and Hasina are expected to jointly inaugurate the Bangabandhu-Bapu digital exhibition later that day.
Modi will attend the National Day programme of Bangladesh on March 26, as the guest of honour. An MEA press statement said, “This visit is in connection with the commemoration of three epochal events — Mujib Borsho, the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman; 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh; and 50 years of Bangladesh’s war of liberation.”
Bangladesh foreign secretary Masud bin Momen said India and Bangladesh would sign three agreements in the areas of disaster management and cooperation.
MEA said, “The visit of the PM to Bangladesh will be the first visit to a foreign country since the outbreak of the Covid pandemic. This highlights the priority India attaches to Bangladesh.”

The Significance Of Matuas and Rajbanshis in West Bengal Poll Battle, Explained

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

The Matuas are a religious sect of West Bengal comprising largely of Namasudras, the second largest lower caste group in West Bengal with a share of 17.4% of the Dalit population of the state. They are basically a migrant community from Bangladesh. As per different estimates, they are around 70 lakh to 1 crore in number though community leaders put it at 3 crore. Their main demands are citizenship rights and refugee rehabilitation.

The Rajbanshis are the largest SC group of the state forming 18.4% of the Dalit population in the state. Their number is estimated to be around 50 lakh. They want territorial autonomy with many community leaders demanding a separate state, Greater Cooch Behar with some districts of West Bengal and Assam. They also want an Indian Army battalion named as Narayani Sena, the army of the erstwhile Princely State of Cooch Behar.

Matuas and Rajbanshis

Once TMC supporters, both the communities recently switched to the BJP wagon based on the poll promises.

Matua and Rajbanshi Factor in the Last Lok Sabha and Assembly Election

BJP promised Matuas and other refuges of West Bengal Indian citizenship through the CAA, winning their support that helped it in winning around 10 of the 18 overall victory mark.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in fact, started his 2019 Bengal campaign from Matua Mahasangha headquarter in Bongaon in Thakurnagar.

While BJP is trying to replicate the same connect in the upcoming Assembly election as well, Mamata is also playing her cards after some Matua leaders getting vocal on CAA delay. They are angry that the central government is yet to announce the CAA implementation date even after two years of the Lok Sabha polls.

Mamata says BJP made a fake promise and Matuas don’t need Indian citizenship and in fact if CAA is implemented, Matuas will lose land and identity.

But BJP that got its first Assembly success in the state in a Namasudras dominated constituency only, Basirhat Dakshin Assembly constituency in 2014, and went on to wrest the Bongaon Lok Sabha constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls that was earlier held by the TMC and CPM, looks all set to fill that gap.

Amit Shah broke bread with a Namasudra household in November and assured Matuas and other refuges of the state that CAA will be implemented once the Covid vaccination drive is complete in the country. Also, PM Modi, during his Bangladesh visit, will visit a Matua temple on March 27.

Before the 2016 Assembly election, the BJP allied with the Greater Cooch Behar People’s Association (GCPA). In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP made electoral promise of naming a battalion on Narayani Sena. With Rajbanshi’s support, the BJP was able to west the Cooch Behar seat from TMC.

The TMC is trying to win them back over. While the Indian Army is yet to have a Narayani regiment, Mamata has already created a Narayani Battalion in the state police force along with announcing state holiday on the birth anniversary of Panchanan Barma, a Rajbanshi icon and reformer. She has also approved a Rajbangshi language board and 200 Rajbangshi-medium primary schools.

Quick steps needed to stop ‘second peak’: PM Modi cautions ‘carelessness’ against Covid-19

Expressing concern over the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in some states, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday said the relative success of India in dealing with the pandemic should not give way to “carelessness” and people should seriously follow the ‘Test, Track and Treat’ formula to stop this emerging “second peak” of the virus.

PM Modi, who was addressing the chief ministers of different states through video conferencing, said failing to stop the rising second peak of the virus might create a national outbreak-like situation and quick and decisive steps are the need of the hour.

“The number of cases is increasing in some states. This increase is more than 150 percent in 70 districts of the country. We must stop this emerging “second peak” of Corona immediately,” he said.

“The position we have reached in the fight against corona, the confidence we have now, should not give way to carelessness,” he added.

The prime minister also stressed the need to scale up the rate of RT-PCR tests, with a special focus on small cities and towns. “We need to be as serious about ‘Test, Track and Treat’ as we have been doing for the last one year. Contacts of every infected person have to be tracked as soon as possible and RT-PCR test rate has to be kept higher than 70 per cent,” he said.

“In several states, rapid antigen testing is being stressed upon which needs transformation. Every state in the country needs to stress more on RT-PCR test,” he added.

Speaking on the ongoing vaccination drive, PM Modi said the country has crossed the figure of vaccinating 3 million people in a single day. However, certain states are reporting 10 per cent vaccine wastage, he said.

“We have to take the problem of wastage of vaccine doses very seriously. There should be zero wastage of vaccine,” the PM said, adding that there is a need to increase vaccination centers both in the private and public sectors.

The meeting was also attended by Home Minister Amit Shah. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel skipped the meeting.

Jain cheekily also scribbled “With utmost regards” while signing the letter.

Earlier, at a rally in Mejia, Banerjee said no one will stop her from taking forward her battle against the BJP. “Amit Shah is getting frustrated as there is a poor turnout at his rallies. Instead of running the country, he is sitting in Kolkata and hatching a conspiracy to harass TMC leaders. What do they want? Do they want to kill me? Do they think that they will win this election by killing me? They are wrong,” she said.

Banerjee also wondered whether the Election Commission has lost its independence, and alleged that the poll panel is working as per Shah’s instructions. “Is Amit Shah running the EC? He is giving instructions to the EC. What happened to their independence? My director, security (Vivek Sahay) was removed (by EC) as per his instructions,” she alleged.

All senior BJP leaders in Bengal are flying to Delhi tonight amid speculations that the saffron party is facing internal conflict over its list of candidates for the upcoming assembly polls as it mounts a high-voltage campaign against the Mamata-led TMC on a war footing.

Mukul Roy and Dilip Ghosh are among those summoned to Delhi on an urgent basis, sources told CNN-News18. Rumour mills are abuzz that both senior leaders will be fielded as candidates.

The BJP’s core group meeting has been scheduled to address the issue at 10 am tomorrow.

A week after he quit the Congress, senior leader PC Chacko joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the presence of Party supremo Sharad Pawar, Supriya Sule and Praful Patel.

Chacko, a former Lok Sabha MP, said the need of the hour is a united front against the BJP which ‘I  could not see that in the party where I was earlier’.

“My association with the left parties is not new. Today when I join the NCP, I will be part of LDF. I have been given instruction by Sharad Pawar ji to travel all across Kerala.”

“LDF will come back to power,” he asserted.

“There are two fronts in Kerala. One is led by the Congress another by the Left. I left Congress, so naturally, I have to take a position. I can support the LDF,” Chacko was quoted as saying earlier in the day.

The Election Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announcement of free delivery of ration at the doorstep.

Commission has sought a report from Purulia district authorities on whether Banerjee promised any new public welfare scheme in violation of MCC

Commission has asked for videos of Banerjee’s public meeting to ascertain the matter. The TMC is scheduled to release its poll manifesto on Wednesday where it is likely to announce ‘Duare Ration’ scheme to deliver free ration to households if it comes to power

Banerjee allegedly made that announcement during her public meeting in Purulia on Monday.

In a big push to Hindutva, BJP National President JP Nadda, who is campaigning in West Bengal, promised to bring all “left-out” Hindu castes under the ambit of OBC.

“The BJP government will constitute a commission and recommend their inclusion,” BJP Spokesperson Amit Malviya tweeted.

Pishi denied them this reservation for a decade, he added.

Union Minister Rajnath Singh hit out at the TMC on Tuesday as it accused the Mamata Banerjee-led party of corruption and political foulplay.

“West Bengal is now known for it’s cut money… not one person in the world can point out a figure and call BJP a corrupt party, he said at a rally in the Sabang constituency.

“Isn’t it correct that bombs are made in West Bengal, and political workers are killed? The day we form the government, we will see who has had ‘Maa Ka Dudh’ to make bombs and attack people,” Defence Minister & BJP leader Rajnath Singh in West Midnapore, West Bengal

Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta, nominated by the BJP for the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections, resigned from the Upper House today amid a row over his nomination. The TMC had decided to move a disqualification notice against Dasgupta for “violating the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution”, after the BJP gave him ticket to contest. The Tenth Schedule of the Constitution says a nominated member of Parliament shall be disqualified if he or she joins a political party after the expiry of six months from the date of taking the seat. The BJP announced Sunday that Dasgupta would be the party’s candidate from Tarakeshwar constituency in Bengal that is going to assembly polls in eight phases starting March 27.

Protests were held across West Bengal after several aspirants criticised the party and resigned after they were denied tickets for the assembly elections. BJP leader and TMC turncoat Sovan Chatterjee along with with his friend Baisakhi Bandopadhyay quit the party after both of them were denied tickets. Chatterjee’s constituency for several decades, Behala Purba, was given to actor-turned- politician Payel Sarkar, who joined the party a few days back. Sovan requested the BJP leadership that he wanted to contest from Behala East but the party has given him the ticket to contest from Behala West.

In a letter to BJP State President Dilip Ghosh, Sovan mentioned, “I fondly remember how you took the initiative of inducting me into the party in 2019. You have always been encouraging but a few minutes back, I got a call from Shiv Prakash ji (National Joint Secretary, Organisation) who told me that the party has decided to give me ticket from Behala West. Also, the party has decided not to give Baisakhi Banerjee, Co-convenor, Kolkata Zone any ticket from anywhere. I feel extremely humiliated and pained to accept this decision as being a public representative for thirty six year.” His letter reads, “As a Mayor and minister, I have contributed to the development of not only Behala, but entire Kolkata. My commitment to the people of West Bengal at large cannot be denied even by my Opposition parties. But the party’s decision not to give me nomination from Behala East is a moral defeat for me and I have never compromised with my principles.”

On the context of Baisakhi Banerjee’s resignation, he mentioned, “Whenever, I have interacted with you, I clearly said that Baisakhi and I have contributed jointly and in a very small span of time, she has managed to garner huge support in the entire Kolkata zone, especially in Behala. But you have decided to overlook her contribution and have decided not to give her an opportunity to contest the election. Therefore, I tender my protest against that also.”

In August 14, 2019, Sovan Chatterjee joined the BJP and then many in the political fraternity questioned that how he will survive in politics due to his hibernation for nearly two years (after resigning from the TMC in November 2018) coupled with health related issues.

On October 29, 2019, Sovan and Baisakhi sprung a surprise after they met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence on the occasion of ‘Bhai Phonta’ (Bhai Dooj).

Then, sensing that Sovan, Mamata’s once blue-eyed boy ‘Kanan’ (as he was fondly called), may rejoin the TMC, the BJP reached out to him. Then, the first one to approach him was Arvind Menon (BJP National Secretary) followed by other senior party leaders over telephone.

Mamata Banerjee attacks Amit Shah; BJP takes a dig at TMC chief’s temple visits | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Battleground Bengal saw another day of attacks and counterattacks as Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee and top BJP leaders traded barbs at election rallies on Tuesday.
While Mamata accused Union home minister Amit Shah of hatching conspiracies to harass the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) took a dig at TMC chief’s temple visits and her reciting of the “Chandi Paath” in election rallies.
The West Bengal chief minister trained her guns at the Union home minister and unleashed a volley of charges against him.

“Amit Shah is getting frustrated as there is a poor turnout at his rallies. Instead of running the country, he is sitting in Kolkata and hatching a conspiracy to harass TMC leaders. What do they want? Do they want to kill me? Do they think that they will win this election by killing me? They are wrong,” she said at a rally in Mejia.
The TMC chief threatened to stage a protest outside Election Commission’s office if the BJP “continued to interfere with the functioning of the poll panel.”
Addressing a public meeting in Bankura on a wheelchair, Mamata Banerjee said, “Farmers have been protesting for six months now, however, the ministers are not holding talks with them. All the ministers are here, in Bengal, where they have booked hotels and are conspiring to destroy me and TMC and how to file cases against TMC with the help of the Election Commission.”
Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Banerjee said, “Modi babu is building a stadium in his name. Will make a road in his name. After that, he will name this country after him and Bharatbarsha will not be Bharatbarsha anymore.”
The BJP counter attack was led by defence minister Rajnath Singh who said the “khela” (game) that will be played in West Bengal after the BJP’s victory in the assembly election will be that of development and peace.

“Post-independence, the kind of development that should have been done in West Bengal, has not been done. Ruling governments destroyed the state. Be it CPM or TMC, poverty and unemployment are rampant in the state,” Singh said during a public rally in West Midnapore.
Claiming that the Mamata Banerjee government has not been able to maintain law and order in West Bengal, he said, “Go to Uttar Pradesh or any other state where BJP is in power, there is peace.”
At an election rally at Balarampur in Purulia district, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath took a dig at Mamata and said she has been forced to take to ‘Chandi Path’ publicly and visit temples due to the change in people’s mindset after the BJP came to power at the Centre.

“A sect of people was created in the country, before the BJP-led government assumed power at the Centre in 2014, who believed that even visiting temples would pose a threat to their secular credentials. A change has come … Even Mamata didi has started visiting temples and taken to ‘Chandi Path’. Isn’t this a change? This is new India. Each and every person has to go to God,” Adityanath said.
BJP president J P Nadda held a a roadshow in Bishnupur area of Bankura district where he announced that Mamata Didi’s game was over.
