RAIPUR: Batting great Sachin Tendulkar on Friday credited the IPL for helping develop India’s bench strength, saying the current lot has benefitted by constantly playing against world-class performers in the lucrative league.
Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, who play for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, have produced stunning knocks against England in the ongoing T20 series and Tendulkar attributed their success to the league.

“Yeah, both Surya and Ishan are ready to play, because you know, I have always felt that IPL’s introduction has helped players,” Tendulkar, who is captaining the India Legends in the ongoing Road Safety World Series, told PTI.
“Because earlier when we played, I hadn’t played against a Wasim (Akram), when we played in Australia, I hadn’t played a (Sharne) Warne or (Craig) McDermott or Merv Hughes. We went there and we had to figure out what has happened.”
Tendulkar said the IPL has provided the players the opportunity to run shoulders with the top stars and compete against the best.

“With the help of IPL, I mean, yesterday I was watching the game, and Surya was batting and (Jofra) Archer bowled to him and Ben Stokes and the commentator said that it is nothing new for Surya because he has already played against Rajasthan Royals,” he said.
“Both Archer and Stokes play for Rajasthan Royals, so it is nothing different and he (Surya) knows what they do and he has played against them already. So, it wasn’t the first time.
“That’s the only reason I am saying that both these guys are ready to play for India and that just shows the bench strength of our team, it is really strong. So that’s the beauty of our cricket now, that there are a number of players, who are ready to go out.”
Back in the field for the Road Safety World Series, Tendulkar said, “It’s a special feeling to be back (in) the dressing room.
“Like I said that sport unifies everyone, no matter which part of the country you come from, which caste, creed, nothing, your bank balance, sport doesn’t recognise anything, it only recognises the way you play,” he said.
“It is a fairground for everyone and we have always believed that when we are there in the dressing room, it is one team, we are together. We have always taken pride in representing the nation, it is a huge honour.”
The Indian Legends have already made it to the summit clash, which will be played on Sunday and according to Tendulkar, all the players are playing for a specific cause.
“It is fun to be out there in the middle for a cause, and I would like to applaud all six teams that include India and I am taking India’s name here also. All the players have come here for a cause and they want to go out and give their best and.
“Players are diving around and trying to stop the ball, trying to bowl fast. So, we are here for a cause and it is a message that we are trying to give to everyone, create that awareness on road safety, which is sometimes taken for granted.”
Tendulkar stressed on wearing helmets while driving.
“The message is that we lose almost 1.35 million people globally every year because of road accidents and out of which 1.5 lakh lives are lost in India because of road accidents. It could be because of not wearing a helmet.
“When we talk about not wearing a helmet, not just for the rider but also the pillion… The stats show that from the age of 18-35, that age group 50 per cent of the lives are lost because of not wearing helmets and not taking precautions.”
“The message we are trying to give everyone is when you are riding a scooter/bike/two-wheeler wear a helmet, if there is a pillion travelling with you make sure that the passenger also wears a helmet.
“If you are driving a car, wear a seatbelt, don’t jump signals, don’t drive on the wrong side of the road.”

India vs England: Not surprised to see Ishan Kishan teeing off, says Jason Roy | Cricket News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: Having seen Ishan Kishan‘s exploits in the IPL, England opener Jason Roy was not surprised at all when he saw the young left-hander taking the game away from his team in the second T20 International.
Making his India debut, Kishan smashed a 32-ball 56 to help India level the five-match series on Sunday.
“He’s obviously a star player, he’s done that for Mumbai Indians, numerous amounts of time so I wasn’t surprised when I saw him kind of teeing off a bit because everyone knows he’s a star player so good on him,” Roy said in a virtual media interaction with the UK media.

“A couple of times he might have got a little bit wrong with the ball but he capitalised by hitting it for six. It’s just a case of just making sure you kind of execute your skills extremely well.”
India have come into the series with the intention of playing more fearless cricket, which was on display in the second T20. England, on the other hand, are already used to that brand of cricket.

“It has worked for us in 50 overs cricket, it worked for us in the T20 games we’ve played. Our policy is to play aggressive cricket, but the problem is, when you’re playing on pitches like this you have to be a little bit more calculated. You have to assess it a bit quicker,” said Roy.
“If you’re wanting to play that way, you got to accept that some days it’s not going to go that way. You are going to be three-four down in a powerplay. But with the depth of our batting lineup, that’s the opportunity it gives to the top order batsmen,” Roy said.

On a turning pitch, England struggled with the ball in their attempts to defend 164 on a pitch that offered less for their fast bowlers and it’s likely to be the case for the third T20 as well.
“They are difficult but just as difficult as our spinners to face as well. We’ve almost learned enough already, that we should be kind of capitalising on what we’ve learned in this series but just last night we made a few mistakes,” he said.
Roy has been consistent with scores of 49 and 46 but has not converted into a big knock and that is something he wants to do in the remaining games.
“It was a kind of pitch where you’ve got to pick your bowler. Unfortunately the bowler I picked got me out. I was looking to target Washington…
“If that over had gone for a few runs, it would have swayed the momentum of our innings quite a bit.
“What I learned was just to make sure I’m staying on my shots a little bit more. I missed a couple of my reverse sweeps. I was out of position, and then rectified that during my innings,” he said.
Roy termed India a class team but said they are confident to bounce back on Tuesday.
“The boys have bounced back, we’re a fast learning side. I don’t think there’s been a huge amount of wind out of our sails to be honest,” he concluded.

Suryakumar Yadav is a perfect role model for youngsters: VVS Laxman | Cricket News – Times of India

MUMBAI: “He’s a perfect role model for youngsters,” said former India batsman VVS Laxman while praising Suryakumar Yadav, who has earned his maiden call-up into the Indian team.
The right-handed batsman has been picked in the T20 squad for the upcoming five-match series against England, beginning this Friday.
While praising Suryakumar, Laxman said that the 31-year-old is a perfect example of how success is not too far away if one stays patient.
“He deserves it, I think he is a great role model for youngsters, especially in India; because they lose patience very quickly – because all positive run-getters in first-class cricket expect to get into the Indian team – but it is difficult. There is so much quality, so much talent, and so much competition, but what did Suryakumar do? – he goes back to first-class cricket, scores runs for Mumbai, whenever he gets an opportunity for Mumbai Indians – he is a positive run-getter,” said Laxman on Star Sports’ show ‘Game Plan’.
“He plays in tough situations and wins the match and that’s what you expect from a player. Ultimately there is a saying which my coach taught me early on, ‘If the selectors are not opening the door, break open the door!’, the only way you can do that is by your performance – we’re not sure if he will get to play in the playing XI but he definitely deserves a spot in the squad of that T20 Indian team,” he added.
Suryakumar has been a consistent performer in the domestic circuit and he has stellar IPL seasons for Mumbai Indians over the last two years. There were a lot of questions asked when he was not picked for the white-ball leg against Australia, but the selectors have now picked him for the England T20I series.
Suryakumar Yadav earned his maiden call-up into the Indian squad along with the likes of Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tewatia.

NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced the schedule for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The season 14 opener of the cricketing extravaganza will take place between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 9.
While the first match will be played in Chennai, the final will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 30.
The tournament will be initially without the spectators, the Indian cricket board said.
“The IPL this year at home will be played behind closed doors to begin with and a call on allowing spectators will be taken at a later stage of the tournament,” Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.
“The fixtures of the tournament have been mapped in a way that every team will travel only three times during the league stage, thus reducing commute and minimising risk,” Shah said.
“After hosting the tournament safely and successfully in the UAE last year … the BCCI is confident of hosting the IPL at home with health and safety of players and all people involved being paramount,” he added.
A total of 56 group matches and the knockouts will be played across six venues that include Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai.
“The season will kickstart on 9th April, 2021 in Chennai with a high-octane clash between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore,” BCCI said in its release.
“The world’s largest cricket stadium – Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, will host the Playoffs as well as the final on 30th May.”
The stadium will be hosting the IPL matches for the first time.
There will be a total of 11 double headers. The afternoon games are slated for a 3:30 pm IST start while the evening games will have a 7:30 pm IST start.
“Each team is set to play at four venues during the league stage. Out of the 56 league matches, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata & Bengaluru will host 10 matches each while Ahmedabad and Delhi will host 8 matches each,” the BCCI release further said.
“One of the highlights of this edition of the IPL will be the fact that all matches will be played at neutral venues, no team will play at their home venue. All teams will play at 4 out of 6 venues during the league stage.”
Last year’s edition of the popular Twenty20 competition was held in the United Arab Emirates as India grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic.
