BENGALURU: Nokia is laying off nearly 1,500 employees in India after it announced a plan to reset its costs. Nokia is repositioning itself to deliver profitable growth and technology leadership including catching up in 5G. The Finnish telecom major is reducing 10,000 employees globally over the next 18-24 months as part of the restructuring plans. On a group level, this is expected to lower its costs by approximately 600 million euros by 2023-end. These savings will offset increased investments in R&D, future capabilities and costs related to salary inflation.
Talking about the impact on its India operations, a Nokia spokesperson said these plans are global and likely to affect most countries. “It is too early to comment in detail, but we expect the consultation processes to start shortly, where applicable. Business groups are looking to reduce site fragmentation, but we have no further details at this point.”
Nokia has over 15,000 people in India, growing from 3,000 in 2007. Nokia’s India presence includes customer operations, manufacturing facilities in Chennai, global delivery centres in Noida and Chennai, and R&D centre in Bengaluru. India is a global hub of innovation in telecommunication services and products for the company.
Nokia’s R&D centre in Bengaluru is one of the four main global R&D sites for the company, employing over 6,000 people undertaking research in various advanced global telecommunication technologies like 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, small cells, and Wi-Fi. Its global delivery centres in Chennai and Noida eploy over 4,000 people who provide support at various stages of the networks across 103 countries.
“We have a clear and detailed plan for how we will reset the business, accelerate competitiveness and scale up our lead in the markets we choose to play in,” said Pekka Lundmark, CEO of Nokia, at its investor day recently.

Finnish telecoms group Nokia said on Tuesday it planned to cut up to 10,000 jobs within the next two years to trim costs and invest more in research capabilities, as part of its restructuring plan.

After taking over the top job last year, Chief Executive Pekka Lundmark has been making changes in a bid to transform the company to better compete with Nordic rival Ericsson.

He announced a new strategy in October, under which Nokia will have four business groups and said the company would “do whatever it takes” to take the lead in 5G, as it banks on also capturing share from Huawei.

Lundmark is expected to present his long-term strategy, discuss action plans and set financial targets during the company’s capital markets day on Thursday.

The company said in a statement it expects about 600 million euros ($715 million) to 700 million euros of restructuring and associated charges by 2023.

“Decisions that may have a potential impact on our employees are never taken lightly,” Lundmark said in a statement. “My priority is to ensure that everyone impacted is supported through this process.”

Nokia expects the restructuring to lower the its cost base by about 600 million euros by the end of 2023. Half of the savings are expected to be realised in 2021.

These savings will offset increased investments in research and development and future capabilities and costs related to salary inflation, the company said.

In February Nokia forecast 2021 revenue to fall to between 20.6-21.8 billion euros ($25-26 billion) from 21.9 billion euros in 2020.

While both Nokia and Ericsson have been gaining more customers as more telecom operators start rolling out 5G networks, the Swedish company has got an edge partly due to it winning 5G radio contracts in China.

Nokia has not won any 5G radio contract in China and had also lost out to Samsung Electronics on a part of a contract to supply 5G equipment to Verizon.

HMD Global, the company behind the Nokia smartphones has hinted at a new launch on April 8, 2021. The company is expected to unveil a new Nokia phone on the day.

HMD Global has usually announced new Nokia phones at the Mobile World Congress every year in Barcelona. However, since the event was cancelled due to the pandemic last year, Nokia’s phone launch schedule has been disrupted.

Not a lot of information is available on the new Nokia phone yet. The brand has only revealed a #LoveTrustKeep tag along with an image of a man looking into a dense tree canopy. The pine trees could hint at the Nordic design that we expect to see on the new device.

Nokia’s rumoured G series

Speculation around Nokia launching a new G series mid-range gaming phone soon has been surfacing on the web for a while now. The phone could be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, as per leaks.

Reportedly called the Nokia G10, the phone was recently spotted on Malaysia’s SIRIM certification Bureau. Featuring the model number TA-1334, the new G series phone is expected to feature a 6.4-inch display, an octa-core processor, and a 48MP quad-camera setup.

This is as now, however, not confirmed by HMD Global. We should find more details about the phone being unveiled closer to the launch date.
