Oppo Find X3 Pro’s ‘Microlens’ Camera Is Baffling Reviewers and Netizens But What is it?

Oppo unveiled the Oppo Find X3 Pro smartphone last week that comes with a quad rear camera system and the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. The Chinese tech company replaced the periscope-style telephoto camera from last year’s Oppo Find X2 Pro and introduced a new ‘Microlens’ camera this year that offers a “closer look at things which cannot be seen directly by the naked eye.” It essentially works as a microscope that offers the tiniest details with 60X magnification. Although many smartphones now come equipped with a macro or telephoto lens; however, the magnification is often unstable, and the picture turns out to be extremely grainy due to a small sensor for light.

Oppo has also shared sample images taken from the Microlens camera on the Oppo Find X3 Pro that include a close-up of a fountain pen. A close up of a leaf further shows various colours on the surface that can be usually viewed with a magnifier. The images are sharp and rich in contrast, unlike photos taken from budget smartphones with macro-camera. Users can activate the microscope option by selecting the feature from the camera app. Oppo states that the said 3-megapixel camera can also capture videos in Full-HD resolution. Meanwhile, here are some reactions from reviewers on Twitter.

Oppo does not exactly explain how the Microlens camera on the Oppo Find X3 Pro work, but it likely that the company uses hardware plus software tweaks to improve the image quality. Of course, the camera would work better with stable hands or a tripod. Tech reviewer and YouTube Marques Brownlee, better known as MKBHD, also tried the phone’s microscope feature and noted the Oppo Find X3 Pro is now using a wider sensor and better lens to handle light better. The Microlens camera comes with an f/3.0 aperture, unlike the traditional f/2.0 to f/2.4 aperture. But all this comes at a cost ,and the flagship Oppo Find X3 Pro carries a starting price tag of EUR 1,149 (roughly Rs 99,900). The phone’s India availability remains unclear.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra’s Optical 10X Zoom Folded Camera Module to Soon Feature on Other Smartphones

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

Samsung has announced that the company will supply its 10x zoom folded camera module to global smartphone and automobile makers. The 10x zoom folded camera module, which is one of the main features of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, allows the smartphone to capture distant subjects with magnification, without the any protrusion in the camera module. The South Korean tech giant is yet to share the name of the companies it will be supplying the modules to. Samsung’s Electro-Mechanics department had developed the folded camera module in 2019 to secure a focus point by refracting the light in the form of a periscope. It enabled 5x optical zoom with the camera tech.

In a blog post, Samsung states that the optical zoom function allows the camera to close in on distant subjects without losing resolution quality – and higher optical zoom is realised when the focus point, or the distance between the image sensor and lens, is greater. In order to solve the camera protrusion, the company developed the dual-folded module by refracting light two times to increase the focus distance while only increasing the length of the camera module by 25 percent. The company further states that to reduce the height of the camera module, it had applied a proprietary lens. “This lens is very difficult to produce due to difficulty in controlling the flatness that influences the light penetration rate,” the blog post added.

Speaking more over the development, Ik Chan Shim, Managing Director at Samsung Electro-Mechanics, said, “Recently, camera modules are being used as key distinguishing aspects for smartphone cameras, and the need for ultra-small, high magnification optical zoom is increasing in the market.” Shim further indicated that the company is happy to supply the camera tech to more companies, without specifying the names. In the past, Samsung Electro-Mechanics worked with Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo in China.
