Only option was to rectify mistakes and come back stronger: Prithvi Shaw | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: He had no option but to go back to the drawing board, rectify his mistakes and come back stronger like never before which Mumbai captain Prithvi Shaw did with aplomb after being dropped from the Indian team.
The former India U-19 captain after a disastrous Adelaide Test was benched for the next three and then dropped from the national team for the England series.
However it did wonders for the right-hander, who created a national record in Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare triumph, ending with 827 runs in the tournament.

“It was a bit difficult but you know, my only thing was go-back and work hard, just those small mistakes, what was happening in Australia, just to fill those blanks and come back stronger..,” Shaw said at the post match presentation when asked how did he come back strong after the Australia tour.
With a pronounced back-lift and the bat coming down at an angle from gully, made Shaw a candidate for bowled and leg before to deliveries coming in. However nothing of that sort has been visible in the Hazare Trophy where he smashed four tons including a record double hundred against Puducherry.
Did captaincy help his batting?
“I (have been) doing captaincy from a very young age, so I have done U-14, U-16 and U-19. I have done India-A as well. I really enjoy captaining the side and you know focused every ball, so I just love doing this and it affects my batting as well, so I am more focused,” said Shaw, who now also holds the record for highest individual score in Hazare Trophy and highest score by an Indian in List A chase.
He lavished praise on experienced Aditya Tare, who scored an unbeaten 118 and helped Mumbai lift the title as the domestic giants made mockery of the 313-run chase.
“He (Tare) batted so well today. It needed so much in the (match) situation. It could have gone any other way. He batted brilliantly and got his hundred, so everyone was definitely happy because finishing the game it’s not easy and he played superbly,” added Shaw, who hails from Virar.
He also credited his team members and support staff for the victory.
“Everyone contributed in this tournament and it wasn’t individual. When it comes to a team, everyone has given 100 per cent, and I feel because of this unity… from support staff, each and every member player contributed in this tournament, so I think this trophy goes to everybody,” he signed off.

The BCCI top brass including president Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah on Saturday had a meeting on execution of various policy decisions approved by the IPL Governing Council at the start of the year.
“The 10 team IPL will roll on from next year and the bidding process and finalisation of the new franchises will be completed by the month of May this year,” a senior BCCI source privy to the developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
“Once the teams are finalised, they can start their operational work which takes considerable time,” the source added.
No Prithvi or Padikkal for ODIs
The Indian ODI team will be announced on Sunday but none of the senior players have opted for any rest for the time being.
“The team is expected to be announced tomorrow. Neither skipper Virat Kohli nor his deputy Rohit Sharma has opted for rest. There aren’t many surprises as we prepare for World T20,” the influential official informed.
He said that both Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal will have to wait for their chance.
“They have done exceedingly well but will have to wait for their turn,” he said.

After a disappointing 2020 when they didn’t have a single international tour, the Indian women’s team ahead of the 50-over World Cup will be touring Australia at the end of the year followed by a short preparatory series in New Zealand before the World Cup.
“Our women’s cricket is as important as our men’s game. We are playing a Test match in England, our first in 6 years and then we have twin tours followed by the World Cup. Our girls have a packed schedule,” the source added.

Captaincy helping Prithvi Shaw’s ‘relaunch’ | Cricket News – Times of India

MUMBAI: If Prithvi Shaw has bounced back just a couple of months after being dropped from India’s Test team following his failure (0 & 4) in the first Test at Adelaide against Australia by slamming four hundreds (including a double hundred) in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, then the Mumbai selectors and coach deserve a pat on the back for this too.
Even though he was returning to the Mumbai team after struggling in Australia, Shaw was made the vice-captain of the team for the league stage of Vijay Hazare, and then the captain for the knockout stage. In the three games that Shaw has led Mumbai in, the 21-year-old’s scores have been: 227* (against Puducherry in the league stage), 185* (against Saurashtra) & 165 (off 122 balls), in the semis against Karnataka.
The responsibility of captaincy, it seems, is making him give off his best. “I have captained the India Under-19 team (to World Cup triumph), and also other teams in junior cricket. Whether I’m captaining the team or not, I always believe in giving more than 100% from my side. Leading Mumbai is an honour for me. I’m thankful and grateful to everyone including my teammates for bestowing their faith in me,” Shaw tells TOI.
“Captaining Mumbai has changed his approach going into matches dramatically. He wants to keep the team first. He wants to take his side through, and that’s what is making a huge difference in the end result. If you see, his hundreds are big ones. He’s not letting it go after getting set. He wants to spend time at the wicket, and doesn’t get carried away with his stroke-play. He takes responsibility for his actions on and off the field, and that helps him in a match situation. He wants to finish the game,” says Mumbai coach Ramesh Powar, a former India off-spinner.
“He’s looking after his teammates very well. He tried to build a bond in the team with a lot of conversations with youngsters. He knows that it’s important to play the senior leadership role, which involves mentoring youngsters. Since he has gone through a few bad patches, he wants to be there for young cricketers and help them out. It’s evident the way he approaches the practice sessions. After his batting practice, he helps out each and everyone who needs anything from him. It’s heartening to see this side of his. I really appreciate it. He even does the bowling drills with youngsters for around 90 minutes. bowls to youngsters. It’s a positive change in him. I hope he continues with this approach for a longer period of time. it might give him the edge doing forward,” says Powar.
Powar has observed that Shaw now looks determined to book his return ticket to Team India. “The important change that I’ve seen in Prithvi that I’ve seen is that he seems to be working on his mindset and the mental aspect of his batting. He knows exactly what’s needed to be done to rectify issues with his batting. You can see the determination to get back into the Indian team in his body language. He’s very much in his own league when it comes to batting technique. He’s very focused on his movements when he’s batting in the nets, so we don’t get into his technical thing. I hope he carries on like this,” says the Mumbai coach.
