Punjab: Nineteen MBBS students tested positive for Covid 19

AMRITSAR: Nineteen out of sixty students of Government Medical College (GMC) who had gone to Jodhpur without informing the college authorities were tested positive for coronavirus and have been sent for home isolation .

Principal, GMC, Dr. Rajiv Devgun informed on Wednesday that sixty students of the second year of MBBS had gone to Jodhpur on their own and had not taken permission or informed the college authorities which was against the guidelines.

He further informed that all of them had returned on the intervening nigh of Saturday and Sunday .”When we came to know that they had entered the hostel, we got them tested for coronavirus and those found positive were isolated for the time being and their parents were informed, late they were sent for home isolation” said Devgun adding that a total of 19 students who hailed from different parts of Punjab were tested positive for coronavirus.

“They were all asymptomatic but they could have potentially spread the coronavirus since they lived in the hostel” he said . They had gone to Jodhpur from where already a high number of cases of coronavirus had been reported added he.

He said taking disciplinary action against them, the college administration had suspended all the sixty students for one month since they had broken the Covid 19 guidelines.

Meanwhile, a total of 178 coronavirus-positive cases were reported from different parts of the Amritsar district on Wednesday. Out of 178 cases, 93 were the new cases while 85 were the contact persons of the Covid 19 patients. A sixty five years old persons Sohan Singh , resident of Jharu Nangar village , died in the Guru Nanak Dev Hosptial due to Covid 19.
