Sony PlayStation 5 is a great gaming console. But it lacks in terms of storage, as its 825GB SSD storage leaves users with only 667GB of usable space when formatted. Given how game sizes are increasing (not that current games are any lighter) every year, PS5 owners will be demanding more space to fit in all their games in their console. For example all the content from latest Call of Duty (Modern Warfare + Warzone + Black Ops Cold War) doesn’t fit on the 500GB PlayStation 4. Now, however, there is good news for PS5 owners as Sony is reportedly planning to allow the usage of an expanded SSD storage starting this summer.
According to a report in Bloomberg, the functionality to support external storage is coming in a firmware update that will activate the M.2 expansion slot present on the PlayStation 5. This expansion slot is currently disabled on the Sony PlayStation 5. Sony had said that the feature was reserved for a future update. The Bloomberg report quotes sources as saying that the firmware update will allow for an increase in the speed of the PlayStation 5’s cooling fans.
“As previously announced, we are working to enable M.2 SSD storage expansion for PlayStation 5. The timing has not been announced and details will be shared later,” a Sony spokesman was quoted by Bloomberg as saying.
The SSD drive on Sony PS5 is an extremely fast SSD, and any third-party storage drive will need to be equally fast in order to store and run PS5 games.
