‘Like Sourav Ganguly, BJP Too Would Hit a 6 in Polls’: With Local Connect, Rajnath Singh Woos Bengal

In a move to connect to the local people ahead of polls, Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday invoked Bengali icon and former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly in his speech. He said that like Ganguly hit a six, with the state’s support, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would too hit a six in the assembly elections.

“Whenever Sourav Ganguly crossed the crease, it was sure that he would hit a six. Likewise, with your support in Lok Sabha, we’ve crossed the crease and surely we’ll hit a six in assembly polls and form BJP govt here,” Singh said in West Midnapore.

Ganguly, the president of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), had recently suffered a mild stroke. According to doctors, three arteries of the 48-year-old were blocked by over 70 per cent and he received a stent in one of the arteries.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and state governor Jagdeep Dhankhar were the first to visit the former India skipper at the hospital. He received calls from the home minister and the prime minister inquiring about his health.

Dhankhar also met the cricketer at Raj Bhavan for the first time, in the over two years he has spent in office. Pictures of the meeting had also gone viral on all social platforms.

According to a report in Indian Express, the hospital authorities had set up a special ‘Sourav Ganguly lounge’ with tea, coffee and water dispensers for visitors who went there without permission. At the lounge, health updates of the former cricketer were shared with the fans at regular intervals.

There were speculations of Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee, Mithun Chakraborty and cricketer Sourav Ganguly joining the BJP. However, while Ganguly and Chatterjee haven’t yet joined the saffron brigada, Chakraborty became a member a few days ago.

The ruling Trinamool Congress, however, feels that this is a BJP strategy “to confuse people”. “By clicking pictures with Sourav Ganguly or Bumba Da (Prosenjit) or Mithun Da, who are immensely popular among Bengalis, BJP is trying to create confusion. Like every other false agenda they bring, this is another fake narrative,” the TMC Rajya Sabha MP and theatre director Arpita Ghosh was quoted as saying by The Print before Chakraborty’s entry into the BJP.

MUMBAI: BCCI president and ATK Mohun Bagan co-owner Sourav Ganguly said that the uninterrupted conduct of the Indian Super League should inspire other sports to start their calendars.
The ISL-7 concluded in Margao, Goa on Saturday.
“The ISL has shown to the world that India can host long format sports events even in the most challenging times. This should inspire many other sports in India now to kick-start their full calendar,” said Ganguly.
The former India cricket captain expressed his appreciation on the success of an uninterrupted ISL, terming it “a new benchmark for the Indian sports industry.”
“The successful completion of Hero Indian Super League in these challenging times is indeed a new benchmark for the Indian sports industry,” said Ganguly.
The ISL organisers, Football Sports Development Limited, had put in place stringent health and safety protocols to conduct the first major live sports event in India amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The season saw FSDL deliver uninterrupted footballing action in Goa by setting up 18 bio-bubbles across 14 hotels, housing 1600 people and conducting close to 70000 RT-PCR tests.
The ISL is estimated to have invested close to Rs 17 crore in maintaining the bio-bubbles.
Commending the organisers, Ganguly said, “It was a mammoth task undertaken by the organisers, considering the uncertainties surrounding initially. Must say, a job well done when you look back at the last 6 months.”
While kick-starting ISL on November 20 last year, FSDL chairperson Nita Ambani had said, “It has taken a lot of courage, determination, and planning to bring football back into our lives, in these pandemic times.”
The 11-team ISL season 7 recorded 298 goals scored in 115 games (an increase of 20 games from previous season) with Mumbai City FC winning both the League Winners Shield and ISL champions trophy.
FSDL also invested approximately Rs 20 crore on rentals and creating infrastructure at eight training pitches for the clubs and refurbishing the three playing grounds at Fatorda Stadium, GMC Stadium Bambolim and Tilak Maidan in Goa to organise the top football league in India.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) will be a 10-team affair from 2022 as the BCCI has decided to auction two new teams in the month of May during the final phase of upcoming edition.
The BCCI top brass including president Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah on Saturday had a meeting on execution of various policy decisions approved by the IPL Governing Council at the start of the year.
“The 10 team IPL will roll on from next year and the bidding process and finalisation of the new franchises will be completed by the month of May this year,” a senior BCCI source privy to the developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
“Once the teams are finalised, they can start their operational work which takes considerable time,” the source added.
No Prithvi or Padikkal for ODIs
The Indian ODI team will be announced on Sunday but none of the senior players have opted for any rest for the time being.
“The team is expected to be announced tomorrow. Neither skipper Virat Kohli nor his deputy Rohit Sharma has opted for rest. There aren’t many surprises as we prepare for World T20,” the influential official informed.
He said that both Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal will have to wait for their chance.
“They have done exceedingly well but will have to wait for their turn,” he said.
Women’s team to tour NZ, Australia next year
After a disappointing 2020 when they didn’t have a single international tour, the Indian women’s team ahead of the 50-over World Cup will be touring Australia at the end of the year followed by a short preparatory series in New Zealand before the World Cup.
“Our women’s cricket is as important as our men’s game. We are playing a Test match in England, our first in 6 years and then we have twin tours followed by the World Cup. Our girls have a packed schedule,” the source added.
Vinoo Mankad U19 starts after board exams
The Vinoo Mankad U-19 trophy, the 50-over tournament which will act as a trial tournament for next year’s U19 World Cup will be held in May-June after the class 12 CBSE and state Board exams are completed.

Opportunities come but we will see where it goes, Sourav Ganguly keeps it open-ended on joining politics | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: BCCI President Sourav Ganguly kept his cards close to his chest amid mounting speculation that he might take the political plunge ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections, saying he will see “where it goes” amid the “opportunities” coming his way.
Ganguly, who is still resting at his Kolkata residence post his angioplasty after minor heart attacks, knows how there has been a speculation of him joining politics, more specifically the BJP, ahead of the eight-phase elections from March 27 to April 29.
“We will see where it goes, what opportunities come in the way, we will take it from there,” Ganguly told ‘India Today’ when asked what’s next after cricket administration.
Ganguly said his life has been full of surprising twists and turns and he has never really had a clue about what’s coming next for him.
“When I first became India captain, I didn’t expect it as Sachin (Tendulkar) was captaining. I probably wouldn’t have got it had Sachin not resigned.
“Similarly, when I became BCCI president, I didn’t know the minute before I would be the BCCI president. That’s the way my life has been…So we will see where it goes,” he said.
According to him, opportunities need to be considered factoring in various aspects of someone’s life.
“Opportunities come and you get influenced by a lot of things, your family, lifestyle, work, health, we will see where it goes,” he didn’t give away anything despite saying a lot of things.
He laughed off the attention that he gets in his home city Kolkata, crediting it to his friendly demeanour.
“I am fortunate to get so much attention. I don’t seek it and I go about doing my job. I lead a normal life in this city. I speak to people, talk to them and that’s my nature.
“I am a very friendly sort of a person with no hang ups. I don’t take to heart what people say. Because I am a popular person, I don’t believe that I have to be unreachable.
“I lead my life because at the end of the day it’s life and that’s why people are fond of me over here.”
Risk element factored in while not allowing crowds in IPL
===================================
Ganguly said allowing crowd in the IPL would have been a bigger logistical issue compared to letting in limited fans during the recently-concluded Test series versus England.
The BCCI has announced that no crowds will be allowed at the venues — Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad — where the matches will be played with no home games for any franchise.
“We have planned it well and we are doing it in clusters. There will be three chartered flights (at the max) for every team. Hopefully, we will be able to manage.
“During England tour, teams have only two domestic chartered flights (Chennai to Ahmedabad and next will be Ahmedabad to Pune),” Ganguly told the channel.
“The numbers are much less but fingers crossed as it’s a huge tournament, the BCCI did it successfully in Dubai and hopefully, we can do it this time as well,” he added.
He didn’t say when would the BCCI consider having crowds back for the IPL.
“Don’t know yet, depends on situation. Dubai also was the same,” he said referring to the 2020 IPL in the UAE.
“It’s slightly different from bilateral. If you open up for crowd (in IPL) with teams practising outside the stadiums, you expect crowds to get closer to practising teams during IPL, so that could be a risk,” he said with a note of caution.

India vs England: Rishabh Pant will be an all-time great, says Sourav Ganguly | Cricket News – Times of India

[ad_1]

AHMEDABAD: Former India captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Friday predicted that Rishabh Pant will be an all-time great across formats in years to come after the young wicket-keeper batsman smashed a potentially match-winning hundred in the fourth and final Test against England.
Pant struck 101 off 118 balls for his third Test hundred, helping India take a sizeable first innings lead after the hosts looked in trouble at 146 for six in response to England’s 205.

“How good is he? Unbelievable..what a knock under pressure…not the first time and won’t be the last time..will be an all time great in all formats in the years to come.keep batting in this aggressive manner. thats why will be match winner and special,” wrote Ganguly on Twitter.

Pant, who not so long ago lost his place in the playing eleven in all three formats, has made a stellar comeback which began with the Test series in Australia where his knocks formed the cornerstone of India’s historic triumph.
He is also back in India’s white-ball squad on the back of strong performances Down Under and in the ongoing series against England.
On Friday, he came in when India’s batsmen had been choked for runs on a difficult track.
The 23-year-old displayed tremendous game sense to first bide his time before taking a worn out attack to the cleaners.
He completed his hundred with an audacious six off Dom Bess, reminiscent of the fearless approach that was once the hallmark of Virender Sehwag’s batting.

India vs England: Rohit Sharma finally gets ‘consistent’ run after seven years | Cricket News – Times of India

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

AHMEDABAD: Rohit Sharma has been considered one of the stalwarts of Indian batting for over a decade, but quite surprisingly this is only the second time in his 13-year international career that he has played six Tests in a row that India have played.
The first time this happened for Sharma was in late 2013 and early 2014 when he had made his Test debut after playing limited-overs cricket for six years.
Sharma played two Tests against West Indies in India, then flew to South Africa for two Tests and then went to New Zealand for two Test matches in 2013-14. After that, however, the batsman had been in and out of the Test side due to inconsistent performances.

Sharma’s first two Tests in 2013 produced centuries and set him on track to achieving greater heights, i.e. one who was ready to replace one of the Indian batting greats — Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, and Sourav Ganguly — who had dominated the previous two decades.
However, things didn’t go the right way for Sharma and his next Test century came four years and 19 Test matches later in 2017 as he was in and out of the Test side.
Even that 2017 ton didn’t help Sharma cement his place in the Test side until the 2019 home Tests against South Africa saw him racking up big scores in a new role. He made 176 and 127 in Visakhapatnam and 212 in Ranchi against South Africa in three Tests.
Immediately after that, Sharma played a couple of Tests against Bangladesh and was almost looking like he would get to play six Test matches in a row when injury ruled him out of the New Zealand tour.
Sharma also couldn’t play the first two Tests in Australia in December but returned for the last two Tests and has now played in all four matches against England at home. The series has re-established him as India’s top batsman as he has handled tricky surfaces very well in the second and third Tests and helped India win.
As of now, Sharma is India’s leading run-scorer in the ongoing series with 304 runs and he could overtake Joe Root (338) on Friday as the leading scorer in the series for both teams.
“Rohit got runs because his shot selection was good. He played sweep shots, he played cover drive, he lifted the ball, played square cuts,” former India batsman and chief selector Anshuman Gaekwad told IANS.

Lost the toss? No problem: How four Indian captains’ luck has fared in the coin toss | Cricket News – Times of India

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

NEW DELHI: As the India-England fourth Test got underway in Ahmedabad on Thursday, India captain Virat Kohli lost the toss for the third time in the series.
Winning a coin toss is entirely up to the luck factor and in not indicative of any shortcoming whatsoever.
Though in some games, depending on the weather and pitch conditions, winning the toss can give a team a slight advantage, the team that loses the toss can overcome that initial hiccup with some quality cricket.
Virat and team India under him in fact area great example of just that. The 32-year-old hasn’t had the best of luck over the years with the coin toss, but has superbly compensated for that with his incredible batting performances, leadership skills and great contributions from his teammates to put India on the top of the charts.
Kohli already is the most successful Test captain ever for India.
A quick look at how four of India’s best captains have fared when it comes to the coin toss, across formats, and their subsequent match win percentage makes for a very interesting read.
TimesofIndia.com dug up some numbers, comparing the toss and win records of four India captains who served as team leader for a long time – Md. Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli:
Virat Kohli
When it comes to the longest format of the game, Virat Kohli has led team India in 59 games (excluding the ongoing fourth Test vs England) and has won the toss in 27 of those matches. But with a staggering 35 wins in those 59 games, Virat sits right at the top of the list of most successful Indian captains. With a success rate of 58.33, Kohli is way ahead of his predecessors.
In the ODI format, Kohli, since 2013 has captained in 92 matches, winning the toss on 40 occasions. But once again with 63 wins, Kohli’s win record in the 50-over format is over 68 percent.
In the shortest format of the game meanwhile, Kohli, since 2017, has led Team India in 40 matches where he has won the toss on just 17 occasions. However, the 32-year-old has tasted success on 24 occasions so far in the 40 matches he has represented India as captain.
Summing up the figures across formats, Kohli, so far has captained India in 191 matches and has managed to win the toss on 86 occasions, which adds up to a win percentage of just over 45.
MS Dhoni
One of India’s most successful captains ever, MS Dhoni added many feathers to his cap during his illustrious career, including a 50-over World Cup trophy, a T20-World Cup trophy, an ICC Champions Trophy and taking India to the numero uno spot in the Test rankings. In a magnificent career in which he served as captain for a decade, Dhoni had some terrific numbers as skipper. And to an extent luck also did favour ‘Captain Cool’ when it came to calling it right at the toss.
In the longest format, Dhoni captained Team India in 60 matches out of which he won 27 games. Out of the 60 tosses he was a part of, Dhoni won it 26 times.
In the ODI format, Dhoni still is India’s longest serving captain — 200 matches where he won 110 matches at a win percentage of 55. Out of the 200 tosses he was a part of in ODIs, he called it right on 97 occasions and had an opportunity to decide whether to bat or bowl first.
In the T20I format meanwhile, Dhoni was at the helm of affairs in 72 matches. He led India to a record 41 wins in those games. In the 72 T20Is, lady luck was on his side on 35 occasions on which he won the toss.
Overall in the 332 matches that Dhoni led the side across formats, the coin fell the way he wanted it to 158 times.

Sourav Ganguly
One of the greatest to have ever played the game, Sourav Ganguly was a remarkable leader, who played a big role, along with others, in laying the foundation on which Indian cricket stands today. A true leader, who made it a habit for India to win away from the sub-continent and gave his teammates the belief to be fearless, Ganguly was a hero during his reign as a captain.
In the 49 Tests that Ganguly represented the country as skipper in, Team India won 21 games. That’s a win percentage of 42.85. And as far as the toss record for Ganguly goes in the longest format, the coin landed in Dada’s favour on 21 occasions.
In the 146 ODIs that Ganguly was captain in, the team won 76 matches with a win percentage over 52. 74 times in 146 matches Ganguly called it right at the toss.
Overall, in the 195 Tests and ODIs that Ganguly represented India, the coin landed in his favour on 95 occasions.
Mohammad Azharuddin
A cricketing warrior whose career was marred by the match-fixing scandal in the 90s. But Mohammad Azharuddin was an icon in Indian cricket, who led India to some memorable wins in Tests and ODIs.
In the 99 Tests that Azhar played for India, he led the team on 47 occasions. Although with just 14 wins, Azhar’s win percentage was 29.78, he managed to win the toss on 29 of those 47 occasions.
Azhar is still second on the list of Indian captains who have led the ODI team the most number of times (174), behind only MS Dhoni (200). In those 174 games, Azhar led the team to 90 wins in the 50-over format, which made his win percentage 52.72. And out of the 174 matches as ODI captain, Azhar called it right at the toss on 96 occasions.
Summing up Azhar’s performance at the toss, there were 125 instances out of 273 total matches when the former India skipper was on the right side of the coin toss.
