PATIALA: Discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur booked her Tokyo Olympics berth with a sensational national record effort of 65.06m as she improved upon her earlier personal best by four metres on the final day of the Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships on Friday.
The 25-year-old Kaur, who had also won gold in the 2019 edition of the championships, dramatically heaved the discus to 65.06m in her first throw to the surprise of the sizeable crowd at the NIS.
The Punjab athlete then fouled all her remaining five attempts.

The Tokyo Olympics qualifying mark in women’s discus throw is 63.50m.
Kaur’s earlier personal best was 61.04m which she recorded in 2018.
She eclipsed the nine-year-old earlier national record of 64.76m which was in the name of Olympian and 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Krishna Poonia.
Competing in her first event after the 2018 Asian Games where she had won a bronze, veteran Seema Punia finished second with a best effort of 62.64m.
The 37-year-old Punia, who had won a gold in the 2014 Asian Games and a medal each in the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games, missed the Olympics qualification mark by less than a metre.

Sonal Goyal of Delhi took the bronze with a best throw of 52.11m.
Five race walkers (K T Irfan, Sandeep Kumar and Rahul Rohilla in the men’s 20km event, and Bhawana Jat and Priyanka Goswami in the women’s 20km event), two javelin throwers (Neeraj Chopra and Shivpal Singh), Avinash Sable (men’s 3000m steeplechase), M Sreeshankar (men’s long jump) and the mixed 4×400 metres relay team have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics earlier.
In other events, star athlete Hima Das of Assam won the women’s 200m race with a new meet record time of 23.21 seconds and took revenge of her semifinals heat defeat to S Dhanalaxmi of Tamil Nadu.
Dhanalaxmi, who took the silver in 23.39 seconds, had broken PT Usha’s earlier meet record by running 23.26 seconds on Thursday. But her meet record lasted less than a day.
Archana Suseendran was third with a time of 23.60s.
Hima, who has a personal best time of 23.10 seconds in 200m, is yet to qualify for the Olympics.
The Olympic qualifying mark for women’s 200m is 22.80 seconds.

NEW DELHI: Tokyo Olympics-bound wrestler Bajrang Punia on Thursday received his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine after rejoining the national camp at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Sonepat.
The elite 65kg wrestler recently won gold at the Matteo Pellicone event in Rome, where he showed improvement on his leg defence.

“I followed the procedure which has been laid out for the common man. I had registered for it. I am feeling ok, there was a slight headache and heaviness after I took a shot but I am perfectly alright now,” Bajrang told PTI.
The 27-year-old also expressed shock at the tragic death of his sister-in-law wrestler Ritika Phogat, the maternal sister of Geeta and Babita Phogat.
Bajrang is married to Sangeeta Phogat, paternal cousin of Babita and Geeta.
“I am surprised how such a young girl decides to take such a drastic step. She comes from the wrestlers’ family. It’s not that there were no people to keep her motivated. She was surrounded by the right people.
“I don’t get it. It’s really sad for the family. Defeat is part of wrestling. How can someone take his life like this,” Bajrang, who is one of the four Indian wrestlers to have qualified for the Tokyo Games, said.
The 17-year Ritika allegedly committed suicide after losing her bout during a tournament in Bharatpur.
Police suspected that the defeat in the tournament could be a reason behind the drastic step taken by the wrestler.

Delhi World Cup a test event before Tokyo Olympics: Sanjeev Rajput | More sports News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Seasoned Indian rifleman Sanjeev Rajput on Thursday said the Delhi World Cup could act as a perfect testing ground for shooters before the Tokyo Olympics as they return to top-flight competition after more than a year due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Barring those in the shotgun, Indian shooters’ last international appearance was the season-ending ISSF World Cup Finals in Putian, China, from where they returned with an impressive medal haul. Just as they looked to continue their dominant run, the pandemic broke out and disrupted normal life last March.
Having run out of ideas and patience after taking aim in his basement, bedroom and hall, Rajput was one of the first shooters to have resumed outdoor training, albeit in an empty 50m range, last summer.
“This World Cup is significant in the sense that it could act as a test event for the shooters before the Olympics,” Rajput told PTI on the eve of the tournament, to be held at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range.
“One can also call it a kind of a dress rehearsal before the Games. This is also going to offer quotas based on rankings and the shooters who are yet to secure quotas will definitely look forward to clinching them here,” the ace marksman added.
The 40-year-old Rajput secured his Tokyo Olympics quota in the 2019 Rio de Janeiro World Cup when he gunned down a silver in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event.
Since the 2008 Games, he has secured an Olympic quota four times on the trot but competed twice.
Rajput is quite satisfied with the way he has prepared for the tournament and the system put in place by the local organising committee, National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), and also thanked the government for making it possible in the COVID-19 times.
“By hosting this tournament, India will set an example of how to conduct big sporting events in the COVID era. The sports ministry, Sports Authority of India (SAI) and NRAI deserve all the credit for ensuring the tournament takes place in a very safe environment,” Rajput said.
He was one of the shooters present during the pre-tournament press conference here on Wednesday.
“I am relaxed looking at the way they have managed everything. Except while they are in the firing line, the shooters are required to keep wearing their masks at all times. There is a kind of a wall made with what looked like plastic or acrylic between every shooting stations.
“We will be undergoing a COVID test the day before our events. So, the guidelines are being strictly adhered to.”
A total of 294 athletes and 109 officials from 53 countries, including a 57-member Indian contingent, will be seen in action in the first multi-nation Olympic sporting event of this scale anywhere in the world post the pandemic-forced lockdown.
Shooters participating in the tournament will be undergoing three COVID-19 tests — on arrival at the airport, 24 hours before their first competition and finally before leaving for their respective destinations.
As part of the SOP, all officials/media will be tested, wearing of masks is mandatory and there will be temperature checks at entry points. There will be isolation rooms and regular sanitisation will be done.
The first qualifying rounds of the tournament begin on Friday, with the first finals scheduled for Saturday.

NEW DELHI: Sports Authority of India‘s (SAI) Mission Olympic Cell has approved swimmer Kushagra Rawat‘s three-month long training-cum competition stint in the USA.
Rawat is a part of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme’s (TOPS) development group.
During his three-month stint in the USA, he will train with Dave Kelsheimer, who was the assistant open water swimming coach for the 2016 USA Olympic swimming team.
During his time in the US, Rawat will also be participating in competitions to achieve the Olympic A cut for direct qualification.
“I had trained under this coach in 2020 when I was in Australia. Some of the swimmers whom I trained with, have already achieved the Olympic A cut. I know the coach and his training patterns, which will be beneficial,” Rawat said in a statement issued by the SAI.
The freestyle swimmer has already made the Olympic B cut in three events 400m, 800m and 1500m.
Rawat is confident that with his stint in the USA, he will achieve an Olympic A cut. He was last week in Bengaluru training under renowned international sports scientist Genadijus Sokolovas, who was on a visit supported by TOPS.
“I learnt a lot about swimming techniques. After all the analysis, I am more aware of myself,” Rawat said about his stint with Sokolovas.
Kelsheimer is currently the head coach of Team Santa Monica, California and was the USA swimming coach at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships.
He has trained a number of Olympians including Jordan Wilimovsky, who finished fourth in the 1500 metres and fifth in the 10000 metres open-water marathon at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Paralympic-bound javelin thrower Sandeep misses out-of-competition dope test: PCI official | More sports News – Times of India

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

NEW DELHI: World champion and Tokyo Paralympics-bound javelin thrower Sandeep Chaudhary allegedly went missing before an out-of-competition dope test at his training base here, officials of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) have said.
The “running away” of Chaudhary, who is under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) of the government, from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex has also raised serious concerns regarding the protocols being followed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“When a team of dope testing officials from abroad came recently to take dope samples from Sandeep as per to the whereabouts he had given, he went missing. He might have run away from the JLN stadium complex where he is based,” a PCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
The 24-year-old Chaudhary, who had also won javelin gold in the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia, could not be immediately reached for a comment.
He is one of the three Indian para athletes included in the registered testing pool of the International Paralympic Committee, the other two being Sundar Singh Gurjar and Sumit — both Tokyo Paralympic-bound javelin throwers.
Chaudhary normally competes in the F-44 category which is meant for athletes who have leg amputations or reduced function in one or both legs. They compete without a prosthesis.
“Since he is in the IPC‘s RTP, he has to furnish his whereabouts regularly (every three months) and the dope testers will come without notice in the time frame indicated by him in the whereabouts form. There is a chance that somebody had tipped him off prior to the coming of these dope testers from abroad,” the official added.
“Moreover, there are strict protocols regarding the movement of the athletes due to the COVID-19 threat and it is not known how Sandeep left his training base. There are quarantine rules when an athlete comes in or leaves a camp,” he added.
If Chaudhary logs two more ‘missed’ tests in 12 months, he could be punished and face a ban of upto two years for a first violation.
An athlete included in the RTP must provide home address, training information and locations, competition schedules, one 60-minute time period a day, where he/she will be available for testing.
A missed test may be recorded if an athlete is unavailable during the declared 60-minute window.
But the WADA website says an athlete will be given an opportunity to explain why he was not available at the location in the given time frame.
PCI secretary general Gursharan Singh said he is collecting information from the Sports Authority of India on how the incident happened.
“We have taken note of the incident but we don’t know how it happened. He was training at a SAI facility and how he got away from that is not under our control. So, we have to ask the SAI people,” he said.
“But otherwise, Sandeep has been clean in all his earlier dope tests as recently as the Fazza International World Para Athletics Grand Prix event in Dubai last month.”
Choudhary had booked a Tokyo Paralympics berth by winning the gold in the 2019 World Para Athletic Championship with a world record throw of 66.18m.
Last month, he clinched gold with a throw of 61.22 metres at the 12th Fazza International Championships – Dubai 2021 World Para Athletics Grand Prix.
