The Mumbai Zonal Unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) today filed its chargesheet in the alleged drug probe related to the death case of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. NCB’s Mumbai Zonal Director Sameer Wankhade, who overlooked the entire probe, confirmed the development but declined to comment on further details.

A total of 35 people have been named in the chargesheet. Among those who are mentioned in the chargesheet include Rajput’s former girlfriend Rhea Chakrabarty and her brother Shovik Chakrabarty. Rajput’s former manager Samuel Miranda and household help Dipesh Sawant have also been named.

Anuj Keshwani, who is accused of keeping big quantity of drugs such as LSD sheets and marijuana, has also been chargesheeted. Two college students, who are allegedly last mile peddlars alongwith two foreign nationals including Agisilaos Demetriades, brother of Arjun Rampal’s partner, have been included in the chargesheet as well. Kshitij Prasad has also been named. Out of all the chargesheeted people, five are absconding.

According to the sources in the NCB, the chargesheet details how various drugs including synthetic narcotic substances were being procured at the highest level and then distributed across Mumbai through various hands.

“From drugs being manufactured to the the supply chain and ultimately its consumption, the trail has been mentioned,” said a source from the NCB. The evidence includes details of WhatsApp messages that were exchanged as well as the seizures that happened during raids.

The charge sheet, signalling the end of the investigations, was filed before a Mumbai Special NDPS Court, follow two cases registered by the NCB after an intimation from the Enforcement Directorate which was probing the financial angles in Sushant’s death on June 14 last year, NCB Zonal Director Sameer Wankhede said.

“Out of these 33 persons, 25 have been granted bail by honourable court and 8 remain in judicial custody. Further investigations are on against known-unknown persons and a supplementary charge sheet will be filed as per laws,” Wankhede added.

An NCB team with trunk-loads of the voluminous 11,700-paged charge sheet and other documents, plus a lot of stuff in electronic form, reached the Special NDPS Court here and filed the same before a Special Judge this afternoon.

Besides Rhea, a girlfriend of Sushant, her brother Showik, the NCB sources said the late actor’s ex-manager Samuel Miranda, his house help Dipesh Sawant, drug peddler Anuj Keshwani, from whom commercial quantity of drugs (LSD sheets and marijuana) were first recovered, figure in the charge sheet.

There are two foreign nationals Agisilaos Demetriades, the brother of actor Arjun Rampal’s South African girlfriend and model Gabriella Demetriades, Kshitij Prasad, a former executive producer connected with Dharma Productions and two college students who are said to be the last mile peddlers, who are named.

Wankhede said that the NCB has seized various narcotic drugs (Charas, Ganja, LSD, Ecstasy) and psychotropic substances (Alprazolam and Clonazepam), Indian and foreign currencies, electronic gadgets and mobiles which were analysed to reveal incriminating evidences pertaining to sale, purchase, procurement, consumption, possession of narcotic drugs.

“The drugs seized were sent for chemical examination, and the case was thoroughly investigated on the basis of seizures effected from the accused, voluntary disclosure (confessions), technical evidences like connectivity through call details, WhatsApp chats, bank accounts, financial transactions and other forms of evidences,” Wankhede explained.

In August last year, the NCB Mumbai had registered two cases related to the drugs angle which emerged in the investigations into Sushant’s death.

Moving swiftly, the NCB had arrested Rhea and Showik, and several other persons in September last year, creating an upheaval in Bollywood circles.

The Chakraborty siblings and another 23 other arrested-accused are currently out on bail, while 8 remain in custody.

On the morning of June 14, 2020, Sushant, 34, was found hanging at his rented duplex flat in a posh building in Bandra, triggering a massive furore in Bollywood and political circles.

Subsequently, the NCB spread its net wide and questioned several celebrities, including Sara Ali Khan, Shraddha Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Rakul Preet Singh, Karishma Prakash, and nabbed comedian couple Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa, who are now bailed out.

Simultaneously, the NCB has gone hammer and tongs after the drugs mafia in Mumbai with a series of seizures and arrests from the city and surroundings in the past six months.

The Maharashtra government has repeatedly demanded that the CBI should make public the findings of the probe into Sushant’s death –- whether it was suicide or murder –- in the public interest.

Bhumi Pednekar on Monday marked two years of Sonchiriya and said the film will be remembered for “generations” for her co-star Sushant Singh Rajput’s performance. Helmed by Abhishek Chaubey and co-written by Sudip Sharma, the 2019 film chronicled the story of dacoits during the time of emergency.

“My Sonchiriya journey. A film that changed me as a person, it gave me courage and strength. It made me brave and selfless. Through these pictures you’ll know why,” Pednekar wrote on Instagram Stories.

The 31-year-old actor shared a series of behind-the-scenes pictures and videos from the film, which also starred Manoj Bajpayee and Ranvir Shorey. In one video, Bhumi explained how she carried pots of water on her head everyday to get into her character.

Mourning the loss of Rajput, who was found dead in his Bandra apartment in June last year, Pednekar praised the 34-year-old actor’s brilliant performance as dacoit Lakha in the movie.

“I want to end by saying… That we miss Sushant. I remember after the screening we both just couldn’t stop crying. We were so overwhelmed and grateful to be a part of this film and what it gave us. A family and experiences for many lifetimes. This one was one of our toughest yet most most rewarding. Your brilliance as Lakhna will be remembered for generations my friend,” she said.

Set in the backdrop of Chambal valley, Sonchiriya was hailed for making a strong commentary on the inherent casteism and for taking on the patriarchal system of the society. Despite immense critical acclaim, the film failed to perform at the box office.
