NEW DELHI: Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday said that lockdown could be an option to control the spread of coronavirus as the state continues to witness a worrying surge in cases.
Thackeray’s statement comes a day after Maharashtra registered its highest-ever single-day spike of 25,833 Covid-19 cases on Thursday.
Speaking about the alarming rise in cases, Thackeray said that the Covid-19 situation in the state has become grimmer as the number of new cases on Thursday breached the previous high which was recorded in September last year.
“I see lockdown as an option going ahead. But I trust people of the state to cooperate (and follow the Covid-19 norms voluntarily) like the last time,” he said.
However, the chief minister said that unlike the previous wave, now we have vaccines to fight the virus.
“When the pandemic began last year, there was nothing to fight the virus with. But now at least we have vaccines as a shield,” he said.
Thackeray said the priority now is to ensure that everyone is vaccinated and urged people to come forward to get inoculated without fear.
“There have been a few instances where a person caught infection after vaccination, but such cases are not life- threatening,” the chief minister said.
Fresh curbs in Maharashtra
Meanwhile, the state government has also announced fresh restrictions to curb the rise in infections.
According to the new guidelines, all drama theatres and auditoriums in the state will operate on 50% capacity till March 31 and no entry will be allowed without proper wearing of masks.
Theatres and auditoriums will not be used for cultural and political events, the order said.
All private offices have been asked to function at 50% capacity.
If found violating the norms, the premises will be shut down till the time Covid-19 stays notified as a disaster by the Centre, it said.
Earlier, the government had ordered cinema halls, hotels and restaurants to operate at 50 per cent capacity till March 31.

Mumbai police officer Vaze is at the focus of a probe by the NIA into the case related to the recovery of an SUV with explosives near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s house

BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday claimed that when he was Maharashtra Chief Minister, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had called him in 2018 to seek reinstatement of the then suspended police officer Sachin Vaze into the State police force.

He also accused the Shiv Sena of pressuring him over this demand at that time.

Mumbai police officer Vaze is at the focus of a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the case related to the recovery of an SUV with explosives near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s house in south Mumbai on February 25.

Mr. Vaze, arrested in the case on March 13 for his alleged role in the crime, was attached to the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) of city police’s crime branch till recently.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Fadnavis said, “I was Maharashtra chief minister in 2018 and also helmed the home department. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had called me to reinstate the then suspended police officer Sachin Vaze back into the police force. Some Shiv Sena ministers later met me with the same request.” “When I received the proposal to reinstate Vaze back into police force, I verbally sought Advocate General’s opinion about it. I was told that Vaze was suspended after the Bombay High Court’s order. Therefore, I decided not to reinstate him,” Mr. Fadnavis said.

The Leader of Opposition in the State Legislative Assembly also alleged that the Shiv Sena even tried to pressurise him over it.

The BJP and the Shiv Sena shared power between 2014 and 2019. However, after the 2019 Assembly polls, the Sena parted ways with the BJP over sharing the Chief Minister’s post and joined hands with the NCP and the Congress. Uddhav Thackeray heads the three-party Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the State.

Credited with eliminating 63 alleged criminals in ‘encounters’, Mr. Vaze, a 1990-batch officer of the State cadre, was suspended in 2004 over his role in the custodial death of a 2002 Ghatkopar blast suspect Khwaja Yunus and was reinstated last year.

16,000+ new cases: Covid surge continues in Maharashtra but fatalities remain low | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra continues to witness an upward trajectory in new coronavirus cases as it reported this year’s highest single-day spike of 16,620 infections on Sunday.
It is for the third day in a row that the state has reported over 15,000 daily cases.
The overall caseload in Maharashtra now stands at 23,14,413 while 50 fresh deaths have pushed the toll to 52,861, the health department said.
Meanwhile, 8,861 patients were discharged during the day, pushing the recovery count of the state to 21,34,072, it said.

Districts leading the surge
Cities like Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune and Nashik are leading the current Covid surge in Maharashtra.
Mumbai continues to see record high numbers, with the city registering 1,963 new cases on Sunday, its highest daily count of the year.

Pune logged 1,780 fresh cases, Nagpur 1,976 and Nashik saw 946 new infections on Sunday.
Overall, the Mumbai division reported 3,676 cases, Nashik division 2,776, Pune division 3,609, Nagpur division 1,860, Latur division 914, Aurangabad division 1,289 and Kolhapur division 106.
Case fatality rate dipping
However, in a positive sign, the Covid fatality rate in Maharashtra continues to be on a decline despite a surge in number of cases.
While the number of cases has been rising rapidly — over 40% since March 1 — deaths have not.
State health officials believe that a lower death count indicates that the SARS-CoV-2 strain in circulation right now is weaker than the ones responsible for the deadlier peaks in May-June and September-October periods.

“Cases are rising but the case fatality rate has reduced. Last week, CFR was below 0.55%,” said Dr Pradeep Awate, who heads the epidemiology cell of the state health department.
“There is low virulence strain at work,” he added.
While the CFR in Maharashtra since March 2020 is 2.3%, it has been steadily dropping in the new year. In January, it was 1.7%, and 0.9% in February when cases started rising two- to three-fold in certain districts such as Amravati.
‘Last warning’
With the resurgence of virus causing alarm in the state, several districts have started taking measures such as imposing lockdowns or night curfew to curb the Covid spread.
Latur became the latest district in the state to impose restrictions. The district administration has announced a night curfew between 8pm and 5am and ordered the closure of all weekly markets till March 31.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, chief minister Uddhav Thackeray issued a “last warning” to hotel associations as he asked them to ensure strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols in their premises.
Speaking at a virtual meeting attended by representatives of hotel and restaurant associations, shopping centre groups, the CM said a “lackadaisical” attitude towards outbreak norms had crept in lately.
“Do not force us to impose a strict lockdown. Consider this as the last warning. Follow all the rules. Everyone has to realise there is a difference between self-discipline and restrictions,” Thackeray said.

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) entrance examination which was postponed will now take place on March 21. The decision comes a day after thousands of MPSC aspirants agitated in Pune after it was announced that the exam will not be held on March 14.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had to issue a video statement to address the students. As per the notification issued by MPSC, the same hall tickets are to be used by candidates for the exams.

“Covid19 cases are going up and we want to ensure that the exams are conducted safely and so we are postponing them only for a few days. We don’t want to play with the emotions or the future of the aspirants,” Thackeray had said on Thursday in his address.

He also appealed to the students to not get restless and to not let this be made into a political issue. “All the manpower required to carry out the exams are currently busy with the Covid19 related work and they will be diverted for these exams. I also want to ensure that the manpower diverted have been tested or only those who have received their vaccination are deployed on exam duty, Thackeray had said.

Shiv Sena Won’t Contest Bengal Polls, to Support ‘Real Tigress’ Mamata Banerjee, Tweets Sanjay Raut

Shiv Sena has announced that it will not fight the upcoming state elections in West Bengal, and will instead support Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress. Expressing solidarity with her, the saffron party has said she is the ‘real Bengal Tigress’.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut tweeted a while ago, announcing the party’s decision. “A lot of people are curious to know whether Shiv Sena is contesting West Bengal polls or not? So here is the update after discussions with Party President Udhav ji Thackeray. Looking at the present scenario, it appears like a ‘Didi Vs All’ fight. All ‘M’s – Money, Muscle and Media are being used against ‘M’amata Didi. Hence, Shiv Sena has decided not to contest West Bengal polls and stand in solidarity with her. We wish Mamata Didi a ‘roaring’ success, ‘cos we believe she is the real Bengal Tigress!!”

Had the Sena decided to contest these elections, this would have been the saffron party’s debut in West Bengal. When asked about the strength of the party there, Sanjay Raut told CNN-News18, “No doubt this would have been our first election there. But we had been preparing quite hard there. Our cadres had been working for quite some time. As per our assessment, we have very strong presence in at least 45 constituencies. Now, all the party workers there will support Mamata didi instead.”

He said the party wanted to stand in solidarity with her as she was being targeted from all sides. “It is she versus all. So we want to tell her that we are with her. And we will fight along with her,” he said.

“Supporting Mamata Didi is our bounden duty. There was discussion within the party for several days on this. And we have now decided we won’t fight polls,” Sena leader Sunil Prabhu told reporters outside Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, where the budget session is going on at present.
