Chinese investor Shunwei leaves Koo – Times of India

BENGALURU: Chinese investment firm Shunwei Capital, founded by Xiaomi founders Lei Jun and Tuck Lye Koh, has made a full exit from Koo, the desi alternative to Twitter. Koo gained prominence in India following the government’s strained relations with Twitter over content moderation in February.
Shunwei, which has placed several aggressive bets on Indian startups, held about 9% stake in Koo’s parent firm Bombinate Technologies.
Koo’s existing investors like venture funds Accel Partners, Blume Ventures, Kalaari Capital and 3one4 Capital have bought half of Shunwei’s stake and the rest has been bought by prominent angel investors, including new names like former Indian cricketer Javagal Srinath.
Other angel investors who have participated are BookMyShow founder Ashish Hemrajani, Udaan co-founder Sujeet Kumar, Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy, and Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamat.
“The fact that they are building a platform to bring the voices of Indian language audiences onto the internet is commendable and as an Indian I extend my support to them wholeheartedly,” said Srinath.
With Shunwei’s exit, Koo becomes the first Indian startup to have done a full clean up of a Chinese investor from the company since border tensions started last year.
Owing to the uncertainties around Chinese FDI, several startups with Chinese investors in their firm are either trying to give them exits or are going ahead raising new capital without taking any new money from them, TOI reported earlier this month.
Shunwei’s exit is said to have happened at a slightly higher valuation than when Shunwei invested in Koo’s parent firm. Koo has not disclosed the details.
Aprameya Radhakrishna, co-founder and CEO of Koo, said they had been in discussion with Shunwei Capital to enable a smooth exit. Koo has nearly 5 million users, he said.

US judge removes China’s Xiaomi from Trump-era blacklist – Times of India

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

WASHINGTON: A US judge on Friday ordered Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi temporarily removed from a government blacklist barring American investment in the company.
Six days before Donald Trump left office last year, his administration cemented its trade war legacy against Beijing with a series of announcements targeting Chinese firms including Xiaomi, state oil giant CNOOC, and social media darling TikTok.
Xiaomi was one of nine firms classified by the Pentagon as “Communist Chinese military companies.”
But US District Judge Rudolph Contreras in Washington ruled Friday the departments of defense and treasury “have not made the case that the national security interests at stake here are compelling.”
He issued a preliminary injunction removing Xiaomi from the blacklist and suspending the ban on US investors buying the company’s securities.
In an appeal filed in January against its blacklisting, Xiaomi — which overtook Apple last year to become the world’s third-largest smartphone manufacturer — said Washington’s moves were “incorrect” and had “deprived the company of legal due process.”
Contreras’s decision came the same day US regulators listed Huawei and ZTE among Chinese telecom gear firms deemed a threat to national security, signalling that a hoped-for softening of relations is not on the cards.
Huawei chief and founder Ren Zhengfei last month called for a reset with the United States under President Joe Biden, after the firm was battered by sanctions imposed by Trump’s administration.
The telecoms giant has been at the center of the Sino-American rivalry in recent years, against a backdrop of a trade and technology war between the superpowers.
Washington claims Huawei has close ties to China’s military and that Beijing could use its equipment for espionage — accusations the company denies.

A new Weibo post reveals that Oppo is expected to unveil its first foldable smartphone in Q2. So, it is possible that the company might launch its first foldable smartphone in June.
Rumours also suggest that the company will not launch its rollable smartphone which it showcased last year. Instead it will launch a new foldable smartphone.
Oppo is said to launch a foldable smartphone with a clamshell design just like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. The smartphone is said to come with a 7.7-inch main display and a 2-inch external screen.
To recall, Oppo showcased an out folding 7.7-inch foldable smartphone last year. The company used foldable panels from Samsung Display, BOE and Visionox.

The ‘real’ reason why the US blacklisted Xiaomi – Times of India

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

Former US president Donald Trump did have a thorny relationship with China, especially when it came to trade and technology companies. During the last days of his presidency, Trump and his administration blacklisted Xiaomi for its ‘alleged’ ties with the Chinese military. The US Department of Defence put Xiaomi on the list and the Chinese company came out defiantly denying any such allegation. “The Company has been in compliance with law and operating in compliance with the relevant laws and regulations of jurisdictions where it conducts its businesses. The Company reiterates that it provides products and services for civilian and commercial use. The Company confirms that it is not owned, controlled, or affiliated with the Chinese military, and is not a “Communist Chinese Military Company”.
However, a new report by The Wall Street Journal now reveals the real reason why the US had blacklisted Xiaomi. The US Defence Department cited a legal filing under which an award given to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun was the main reason for the company being blacklisted. 100 executives — including Lei — were given the “Outstanding Builder of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics” award in 2019.
Now if you are wondering how an award could lead to a rather drastic step then here’s why. The award was given by MIIT, a government agency that looks at China’s technology and industrial policies. According to the report, the agency is responsible for China’s “civil-military fusion” and is responsible for China working with private companies to create tech for the country’s military.
Interestingly, the award given to its CEO is promoted on his biography page on the company’s corporate website. Xiaomi, as per multiple reports, has been using the legal route to get itself removed from the US’ blacklist. The company hasn’t commented on the award being the reason behind its troubles in the US.

Qualcomm has announced the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound platform for smartphones and audio products, with the focus on improving the experience of music streaming, phone calls and gaming with wireless audio products. Qualcomm says that the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound platform is optimized, in terms of the hardware and software, for better Bluetooth connectivity even in environments with radio frequency congestion, low latency that would smoothen the experience of gaming as well as video conferencing, allow easy pairing and multiple connections as well as reduce the battery consumption on smartphones along with the paired wireless earbuds and headphones.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound platform will be able to deliver twice the audio bitrates (this will support high-resolution 24-bit 96kHz audio), twice the audio sampling frequency for voice calls and as much as 45% lower latency for audio and video sync for gaming and video usage (that’s as low as 89 milliseconds), as compared with most current smartphones and wireless earbuds combinations. The hardware side of the Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound platform comes together as a triple branched implementation. For smartphones and mobile devices, this will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform along with the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 System, Qualcomm Aqstic Audio Codec and the Qualcomm Aqstic Smart Speaker Amp. For headphones and wireless earbuds, the platform brings along the Qualcomm QCC515x Bluetooth Audio SoC, the Qualcomm QCC514x Bluetooth Audio SoC and the Qualcomm QCC3056 Bluetooth Audio SoC.

These will combine with audio and voice software solutions such as Qualcomm TrueWireless Mirroring, Qualcomm Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Qualcomm aptX Adaptive Audio, Qualcomm aptX Voice Audio and the Qualcomm HDR & 3D Audio Record. “The human ear is highly sensitive to glitches, latencies and other challenges which commonly occur when streaming music, video conferencing, or gaming over wireless connections. By focusing end-to-end, we are looking to deliver innovations to solve common consumer pain-points across virtually all audio interaction points,” said James Chapman, vice president and general manager, Voice, Music and Wearables, Qualcomm Technologies International Ltd.

Brands are already lining up the incoming launches with the Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound integration. Smartphone maker Xiaomi as well as audio brand Audio-Technica have confirmed as much. “Xiaomi is excited to be the first mobile manufacturer to bring Snapdragon Sound to devices. Snapdragon Sound will bring new high quality, seamless, low-latency audio experiences to our customers everywhere and provide better sound while engaging in voice calls, video conferencing, gaming or music listening,” says Lei Zhang, vice president of Mi Smartphone and general manager of Hardware R&D, Xiaomi. “We believe that with Snapdragon Sound we get closer to our mutual vision of providing wired quality sound, wirelessly and are excited to be one of the first manufacturers to get our products to consumers,” says Kotaro Narihara, director, general manager of marketing headquarters, Audio-Technica.

The first line of products with Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound should be rolling out later in the year, with the solution now available for OEMs now. Qualcomm says it’ll be easy for users to know which products have this integrated, because they will carry with Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound logo. The company also plans to add the solution for PCs, smart watches and smart glasses soon.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra’s Optical 10X Zoom Folded Camera Module to Soon Feature on Other Smartphones

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

Samsung has announced that the company will supply its 10x zoom folded camera module to global smartphone and automobile makers. The 10x zoom folded camera module, which is one of the main features of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, allows the smartphone to capture distant subjects with magnification, without the any protrusion in the camera module. The South Korean tech giant is yet to share the name of the companies it will be supplying the modules to. Samsung’s Electro-Mechanics department had developed the folded camera module in 2019 to secure a focus point by refracting the light in the form of a periscope. It enabled 5x optical zoom with the camera tech.

In a blog post, Samsung states that the optical zoom function allows the camera to close in on distant subjects without losing resolution quality – and higher optical zoom is realised when the focus point, or the distance between the image sensor and lens, is greater. In order to solve the camera protrusion, the company developed the dual-folded module by refracting light two times to increase the focus distance while only increasing the length of the camera module by 25 percent. The company further states that to reduce the height of the camera module, it had applied a proprietary lens. “This lens is very difficult to produce due to difficulty in controlling the flatness that influences the light penetration rate,” the blog post added.

Speaking more over the development, Ik Chan Shim, Managing Director at Samsung Electro-Mechanics, said, “Recently, camera modules are being used as key distinguishing aspects for smartphone cameras, and the need for ultra-small, high magnification optical zoom is increasing in the market.” Shim further indicated that the company is happy to supply the camera tech to more companies, without specifying the names. In the past, Samsung Electro-Mechanics worked with Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo in China.
