MyTutor, a UK-based EdTech startup that provides online interactive one-to-one tuition for secondary school-aged pupils, has raised £15 million in a new funding round led by SEEK Investments.
The round also saw participation from existing investors including Mobeus Equity Partners.
The new round of funding will support MyTutor to build out its platform to enable tutors to deliver even more effective and engaging lessons, further develop its group tuition product and expand internationally.
MyTutor’s platform is an online lesson space where hand-picked student tutors are matched to aspiring school students. All its tutors are subject experts from the UK’s top universities with recent exam experience and each one is personally interviewed to ensure they can explain in a way teens can understand. The tutors not only provide academic support but also build confidence and provide mentorship.
My Tutor was founded in 2013 by Bertie Hubbard, James Grant and Robert Grabiner with a mission to bring life-changing tuition for all, regardless of background and supports both disadvantaged students through its school programme and private tuition by partnering directly with parents.
Speaking about the company, Co-founder and CEO of MyTutor, Bertie Hubbard, said,
“We see tutoring as a core part of every child’s education, not as a quick stopgap to deal with an immediate learning problem. It works best alongside their school education – filling any gaps in their foundations, building confidence, and unlocking their full potential.”
With a base of 20,000 tutors, the startup supported more than 1,000 secondary schools, hundreds of thousands of parents and delivered over two million lessons. The startup has been revealed as a provider for the National Tuition Programme for the second year running after supporting 30,000 students with catch-up learning in the last academic year.
SEEK co-founder Andrew Bassat has said,
“A positive education experience for everyone is of critical importance. The pandemic has only highlighted the need for an online service that helps fill the gaps in today’s education system by delivering personalised support tailored to the individual. We are excited to support MyTutor as they look to bring life quality tuition to a wider audience.”
MyTutor was the largest provider of in-school tuition in last year’s government-backed National Tuition Programme.
The company had raised $4.4 million in June 2020 in a round led by Mobeus Equity Partners to bring private tutoring to more students amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
