Appearing for JEE under the PwD category

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

A total of five candidates under the persons with disability (PwD) category achieved above 99 percentile in JEE Main (February) 2021. Vishwadev from Haryana emerged as the topper in the PwD category with 99.94 percentile followed by Arnav Jaideep Kalgutkar with a score of 99.90.

Arnav suffers from high-functioning autism, which is also known as Asperger syndrome. “From sensory to linguistic issues, I face multiple challenges daily. The syndrome does not allow me to gather my thoughts quickly like other students, and I often take more time than usual for the same. Visual perception and visual-motor dysfunction also create problems for me. When everything went online during the coronavirus pandemic, I found it difficult to cope with the digital learning format,” says the 17-year-old Pune boy.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has special provisions for PwD category candidates that include extra time to complete the exam and the facility to use a scribe. The total number of PwD candidates who appeared for JEE Main (February) 2021 has not been revealed by the agency.

Sadhana Parashar, senior director, NTA, told Education Times, “We are following all the necessary measures prescribed by the government under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016. We provided ample time for the candidates to get their scribes this year due to the coronavirus outbreak.”

Arnav, who aspires to enter the field of space engineering, did use an extra hour to complete his exam. While the most common choice among students is to pursue computer science engineering, he wants to learn about building space satellites and rockets through mechanical engineering.

“I will not appear again for the exam as I am happy with my score. My focus is now to do well in JEE Advanced and join IIT Bombay. After joining my course, I will try to work on as many practical projects as possible. But, I am a bit worried about staying in the hostel due to my sensory issues. As a drawback due to the syndrome, I can eat foods items of a particular texture with no hard flavours,” says Arnav, who studies at Suryadatta National School in Pune.

He credits his psychologist mother, Anuprita Kalgutkar, for his achievement as it was because of her that Arnav’s autism was diagnosed at an early stage and timely interventions were possible.

Lovesh Kumar Gupta, who topped JEE Advanced in 2017 under the PwD category, says that there is a need to have inclusive provisions to encourage more PwD candidates to appear for the exam as most seats under the quota remain vacant at the end of the admission season. The reservation for PwD candidates is horizontal and the vacant seats are often de-reserved to the respective categories. For instance, unfilled SC-PwD seats will convert to the SC category seats and so on.

“I have weakened left body and that limits my ability to do many things like my peers. I am pursuing BTech in computer science engineering at IIT Bombay, but I can only type with one hand. Less than 3000 PwD candidates took JEE Main (January) 2020. Consequently, the PwD quota seats in most colleges do not get filled up. We need to change society’s mindset to encourage more students to follow their dreams, even while facing a disability,” says Lovesh, who believes that PwD candidates should prepare as per their comfort and find solutions to their restraints.

JEE Main Day 2 analysis: Experts say exam easier than previous years, math can be deciding factor

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

The JEE Main for the BTech and BE exams remains easier as compared to previous years, claim experts. The ease was due to the option of having choices in the exam. However, in both morning and afternoon shifts, one section remained a bit tricky and experts believe that this has set a pattern for the coming exams as JEE will continue till February 26.

JEE Main LIVE updates

In the morning section, the chemistry was comparatively tougher with unusual questions from lab manual while in the afternoon shift, there were tricky questions in the mathematics section, said Saurabh Kumar, director academics, Vidya Mandir Classes (VMC). “In physics, in the morning session, three questions were asked from semi-conductors. This topic usually carries only one question. In the evening session, physics had three questions from the solutions chapter from where there is usually only one question. Further, in the morning shift, there was no question from rotations which is an important topic,” said Kumar.

Even as there were a couple of tricky questions in chemistry and physics, the mathematic section can be the deciding factor, said Ajay Kumar Sharma, national academic director (engineering), Aakash Educational Services Ltd. (AESL). “Students who scored well in math can get better ranks. While the overall exam was easy and the option of having a choice in exam gave students a respite, the math section was comparatively tougher. In chemistry too, there were some calculative questions. Most of the questions were from NCERT. Those students who would have participated in past year papers would find the exam easier.”

In the morning session’s chemistry, questions were asked from the periodic table, chemical bonding. In organic chemistry, there were questions from reactions, coordination compound, equilibrium, and solutions topics. In physics, questions were asked from the unit and dimensions chapter. There were more questions from class 12 than class 11. In physics, questions from modern physics and current electricity were asked. Other topics from which questions were asked include, thermodynamics, in math coordinate, calculus, determinant matrices, and quadratic equation, told Kumar.

Ramesh Batlish from FIITJEE informed that weightage was given to chapters of coordinate geometry, 3D and Vector, algebra. Few numerical-based questions required lengthy calculations in the mathematics section. In physics too, numerical-based questions had lengthy calculations but were easy. Physical chemistry was given more weightage as compared to organic and inorganic chemistry, as per Batlish.

Written by Piyush Maheshwari

NTA JEE Main 2021: JEE Main is being conducted in multiple sessions from February to May this year for admissions in the next academic session in 2021. The session 1 is scheduled on February 23, 24, 25 and 26. The engineering entrance test consists of two papers — paper-1 is organised for undergraduate engineering programme B.E/B.Tech at NITs, IIITs, other centrally funded technical institutions (CFTIs), and entities supported by participating state governments, while paper 2 is for undergraduate architecture programmes, B.Arch, B.Planning.

This exam provides the basis for admissions to engineering and architecture programmes for over 25,000 students every year.

Here are 10 mistakes candidates should avoid during the exam

1. Read instructions properly: One must read each instruction carefully to ensure no important information is missed.

2. Selection of section: It is ideal to prioritise chemistry before moving on to the others. This section generally consumes the least amount of time which makes it easier to finish first.

3. Time distribution to each section: It is essential to distribute your time section-wise. This makes it smoother to solve your paper on time. Make sure that you are not spending more time than required for any section. It is advised to spend 40 minutes on chemistry, 60 minutes on math and 80 minutes on physics respectively.

4. Time distribution for each question: Not spending too much time on a single question is equally important. Devoting more time to a challenging question will leave one with lesser time for other simpler questions. It is ideal to spend no more than three minutes for each question.

5. Read all questions: Reading every question carefully is crucial as it enables one to understand it properly. Candidates can avoid errors if they read the questions thoroughly.

6. Read the options carefully: It is equally crucial to read all four options carefully. Do not rush while going through them. Giving adequate time to read them helps one understand and deduce better. Rushing can often make aspirants miss out on the correct answer.

7. Stay calm: Staying calm is essential for everything one does in life, more so in an examination. It can help aspirants achieve what they are capable of. Whenever you find time during the examination, try to take a couple of long breaths as it puts the mind at ease.

8. Believe yourself: One can achieve anything if they believe in themselves. Motivation is a key factor for everything one does in their life. It is essential to believe in yourself for this or any other exam.

9. Do not make new concepts instantly: Leave the concepts which are new for the end. It is a good practice to solve everything you know first before moving on to new concepts.

10.Do not guess, be sure: It is not advised to choose answers which are based on guesswork. Candidates should ideally leave the questions they are not sure about and only answer those they feel confident about.
