At around 11 pm in India, many users were shocked to find that their messages were not being delivered on WhatsApp. Social media platform Facebook too seemed to be showing an error. Instagram was not spared as well. Confused about what could possibly be going on, everyone turned to Twitter. Much to their surprise, and some relief, they realised that it was not their phones that had crashed – on the contrary, the three most popular social media platforms had stopped working simultaneously. Users online started reported problems with its services late Friday at about 10:55 pm IST. Outage tracker Downdetector shows a spike in outages.

According to the site, over 34,000 people have reported facing issues on WhatsApp at the time of writing this. By the time you read this, the number is likely to have increased.

It is not known what has caused the outage, but many users across the world, including India and the United States, are posting about the outage on Twitter.

Messages are not being delivered on WhatsApp. Users are also unable to post content on Instagram. Whatsapp’s official account on Twitter has not issued a statement yet. The issue with Facebook’s application is reportedly not global; some users are experiencing trouble and others are not.

With most modes of communication snatched away, internet users did what they do best – memes.

Not just India, the problem seems to have been reported globally with numerous international publications reporting the same. As of now, it appears that services are being restored.

The services had last month on February 19 witnessed a similar outage, when users reported problems early in the day at around 7:55 am IST. It was not ascertained what had caused the outage but services were restored after a while.

WhatsApp has hired a top Amazon executive to head its payments business in India, two sources told Reuters, as the messenger service gears up to expand in the booming sector.

Manesh Mahatme, who has worked at Amazon Pay for nearly seven years, is due to join WhatsApp’s payment service soon, one of the sources said on Friday.

WhatsApp and Amazon Pay were not immediately available for comment. Mahatme declined to comment.

With more than 500 million users, WhatsApp counts India as its biggest market, where it is the newest entrant in India’s digital payments sector, which PwC and Indian industry body ASSOCHAM say is set to be worth $135 billion by 2023.

WhatsApp last year received a much-delayed approval for the launch of its payments system in India, but so far its rollout has been capped by regulators at 20 million users.

But it has big ambitions and a deal by Facebook last year to invest $5.7 billion in billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Platforms digital unit, will allow WhatsApp to offer payments services to millions of mom-and-pop stores.

“Mahatme is a hardcore payments professional, that’s the missing link for WhatsApp,” one of the sources said.

Amazon Pay has been increasingly offering users online bill payments and also acts as a digital wallet-service on the e-commerce giant’s India website.

As a director, Mahatme oversaw a team of senior product, engineering and business development leaders at Amazon Pay, his LinkedIn profile shows.

WhatsApp also has plans to deepen its partnership with banks in bid to offer financial services such as pensions and insurance, its India head Abhijit Bose – also a payments industry veteran – said last year.

Restrain WhatsApp from implementing new privacy policy: Centre to Delhi HC – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The government on Friday urged the Delhi high court to restrain WhatsApp from implementing its new privacy policy and terms of service.
The ministry of electronics and information technology made the statement in its affidavit filed in response to a petition challenging the new privacy policy of social networking platform WhatsApp.
The petitioners, Seema Singh and Meghan Singh, have contended that the new privacy policy indicates the “fissures” in the data protection and privacy laws.
In January, the messaging platform informed users it was preparing a new privacy policy, under which it could share limited user data with Facebook and its group firms.
This sparked a global outcry and sent users to rival apps Telegram and Signal, among others, prompting WhatsApp to delay the new policy launch to May.
The company then clarified that the update was focused on allowing users to message with businesses and would not affect personal conversations.
WhatsApp’s new privacy policy requires users to either accept it or exit the app, but they cannot opt not to share their data with other Facebook-owned or third party apps.

WhatsApp will soon add the ability to play voice messages at different playback speeds. Currently, the Facebook-owned company lets you check out voice messages at normal speed. This feature will help those who want to hear a voice message at a much slower or faster speed.

WABetaInfo has shared screenshots of the feature, which shows that users will get three playback speed options. These include 1.0X, 1.5X and 2.0X. The feature will be immediately available and you won’t need to follow any steps to use this. If you receive a voice message, WhatsApp will add the playback speed button on it.

The cited source e reported that “WhatsApp would also support lower playback speeds, but they won’t be released to the public because they make less sense. This feature is under development and it will be available for both iOS and Android beta builds.” WABetaInfo is also claiming that the feature will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp is also working on a feature called “Multi-Device Support,” which the messaging service is expected to add to its platform in the coming months. It will first be available for iOS users and then to Android WhatsApp users, as per the cited source.

WABetaInfo reported that “WhatsApp is developing two different kinds of Multi-Device with WhatsApp Web where you can use WhatsApp Web without your main phone to be connected to the internet. And Multi-Device with other devices where you can connect up to four different devices to your main WhatsApp account.”

Apart from this, the company is also expected to introduce the “Encrypted Chat Backup” feature. WhatsApp chats are already end-to-end encrypted, but you back up your chats on a third-party app, which is Google Drive. WhatsApp is planning to add a new encrypted chat backup option, which will improve user privacy and save your accounts from getting hacked.

No proposal to appoint regulator for social media: Prasad

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

“The social media platforms are enjoined to develop a robust grievance redressal system.”

The government on Wednesday informed Parliament that there is no proposal with the IT ministry to set up a regulator for social media.

Union IT and Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, however, said that the government has released Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, under the IT Act that specifies the due diligence to be followed by all the intermediaries, including the social media intermediaries.

“The social media platforms are enjoined to develop a robust grievance redressal system. Presently, there is no proposal with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to appoint a regulator for social media,” Mr. Prasad informed the Lok Sabha.

The government in February had announced sweeping regulations for social media firms like Facebook and Twitter as well as OTT players such as Netflix, requiring them to remove any content flagged by authorities within 36 hours and setting up a complaint redressal mechanism with an officer being based in the country.

The guidelines also make it mandatory for platforms such as Twitter and WhatsApp to identify the originator of a message that authorities consider to be anti-national and against security and sovereignty of the country.

The new rules related to social media platforms are to be handled by the IT ministry while the Information and Broadcasting ministry will look after content related issues on entertainment apps and online news portals.

Mr. Prasad said under provision of section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, the government blocks unlawful and malicious online content including social media account, in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the State, friendly relations with foreign states or public order or for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognizable offence relating to above.

“Under this provision, 9,849 URLs/accounts/webpages, mostly on social media platforms, were blocked during the year 2020,” Mr. Prasad said.

In response to question whether the government has conducted any study regarding the impact of government’s control over social media vis-a-vis right to freedom of expression enshrined in the constitution, Prasad denied any such study undertaken by the government.

He said that the government welcomes criticism, dissent and also the rights of people to ask questions on social media.

“However, this needs to be acknowledged that the fundamental right of speech and expression under article 19(1) is also subject to reasonable restrictions under article 19(2) of the Constitution which can be imposed in the interest of security, safety and sovereignty of India, public order, friendly relations with foreign countries etc,” Mr. Prasad said.

The minister said it is equally important that social media should not be abused or misused to defame, promote terrorism, rampant violence and compromise the dignity of women.

Facebook earns nearly 98% of its revenue from advertising, and retains 45% of ad revenue earned by creators

Some Facebook users will now be able to make money from their short video posts, provided their viewers watch an ad after 30 seconds into the video.

The social network had earlier permitted monetisation through in-stream ads on videos longer than three minutes, when ads will be flashed after the video runs 60 seconds.

Ads on videos longer than three minutes can now display ads at the 45-second mark, the company said in a statement.

Facebook launched in-stream ads in 2017, allowing creators to earn from videos in the Watch section, including on-demand and live videos. The move was said to help creators boost visibility and enhance engagement. In-stream ads payout grew more than 55% from 2019 to 2020, according to Facebook.

Only users over 18 years of age, with over 10,000 followers, and having 600,000 total minutes viewed from any combination of video uploads are eligible for monetisation. Additionally, they must have five or more active video uploads or live videos, Facebook stated.

The move to promote short videos is an seen as an attempt to popularise Instagram Reels, Facebook’s version of rival TikTok. Recently, Facebook said it is testing a feature to allow users to post Reels to their Facebook profiles. It also said some of its users can earn money through sticker ads on Facebook Stories. No govt communication ever threatened social media platforms’ staff of jail term: IT Ministry

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

The government had ordered Twitter to take down hundreds of posts, accounts and hashtags, that it saw violating rules.

The government has never threatened employees of any social media platform, such as Twitter, of jail term, the IT Ministry has said.

Reacting to reports that alluded to Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter employees being threatened with jail term, the Ministry said social media platforms are “obliged to follow the laws of India and the Constitution of India, just like all other businesses in India have to.” “As has been conveyed on the floor of Parliament, users of social media can criticise the government, the Prime Minister or any Minister but promotion of violence, rampant communal divide and stoking the flames of terrorism will have to be reflected upon,” it said.

The government had ordered Twitter to take down hundreds of posts, accounts and hashtags, that it saw violating rules. Twitter initially did not fully comply but fell in line after the government showed the rule book that contained penal provisions.

The IT Ministry went on to state that the recent guidelines pertaining to social media simply require the platforms to put in place a robust grievance redressal mechanism for users.

“None of the government communications, either written or oral, have ever threatened the employees of any of the social media platforms of jail term,” it said.

“The government welcomes criticism and dissent. However, of late, repeated instances of abuse of social media to foment hate, discord and violence by terrorist groups from outside India and circulation of morphed images of women, revenge porn posing threat to the safety of users especially women users have become grave concerns,” it said.
